INVENTOR. SAMUEL. LKLEVEIY ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 22, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOOTWEAR Samuel L. Kleven, Augusta, Maine Application July 13, 1944, Serial No. 544,690
3 Claims.
This invention relates to footwear and its manufacture.
The object of my invention is to provide on an economical basis, footwear characterized by a trim on the margin of the upper.
I accomplish this result by providing a sock lining with marginal stock extending beyond the edge of the element of the sole structure to which it is attached to have a line of fold adjacent thereto when the marginal tock is folded upwardly. The upper is formed so that it is properly shaped when its bottom edge is in contact with the sock lining substantially along the line of fold and is assembled to the sole structure by attachment of the upwardly folded marginal stock thereto which thus becomes the trim. Preferably, the marginal stock and the upper, adjacent its bottom edge, have a series of apertures so that they may be readily assembled, as by lacings.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown an embodiment of my invention from which its features and advantages will be readily apparent.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a view, in perspective, of footwear in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the footwear of Fig. 1.
At 5, I have indicated generally a sole structure which may be of any type, but is shown as including a midsole, insole, platform or the like 6, having a. trim l stitched thereto as at 8.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a sock lining 9 at least certain marginal portions ID of which extend beyond the edge of the midsole or the like Ii to have a line of fold at II adjacent the edge thereof. The sock lining 9 may be attached to the sole structure in any desired way, as by stitching 12.
The upper 13 may be of any desired construction and design, but it i formed so that when its bottom edge I4 is in contact with the sock lining 9 substantially along the line of fold II, it is properly shaped. The upper is assembled to the sole structure by folding the marginal portions Ill of the sock lining upwardly and outwardly of the upper and connecting them to the upper l3 ad- J'acent its bottom edge It.
As shown in the drawing, the connection of the upper l3 to the marginal stock I0 may be readily effected by a lacing I 5 disposed through apertures l6 and I1 formed in the marginal stock Ill and in the upper l3, respectively, adjacent its bottom edge.
My invention thus provides a simple and economical basis of producing shoes of good wearing qualities and attractive appearance.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A shoe, comprising a sole element, a sock lining at least certain portions of which extend be yond the edge of said sole element when attached thereto, means attaching said sock lining to said sole element so that said marginal portions may be folded upwardly and outwardly along a line of fold adjacent the edge of said sole element, an upper the bottom edge of which engages said sock lining substantiallyalong said line of fold, the marginal portions of the sock lining and the upper adjacent its bottom edge having, respectively,
a series of perforations alignable with each other" when the bottom edge of the upper is in engagement with the line of fold, and attaching means extending through the perforations of the upper and the sock lining.
2. A shoe, comprising a platform sole having a binding secured to the edge thereof, a sock lining disposed over said platform sole and having upturned marginal portions, said sock lining being secured to said platform sole by a line of stitching extending through said platform sole and sock lining, an upper disposed inside of said upturned marginal portions of the sock lining and secured thereto by a line of stitching, and a wear sole attached below said platform sole.
3. A shoe, comprising a platform sole having a binding secured to the edge thereof, a sock lining disposed over said platform sole and having upturned marginal portions, said sock lining being secured to the platform sole by a line of stitching extending through said platform sole and sock lining, an upper disposed inside of said said upturned marginal portions of the sock lining, said upper and said upturned marginal portions each having spaced alignable perforations, fastening means extending through the perforations of the sock lining and upper, respectively, for uniting said parts, and a wear sole attached below said platform sole.
