CHARLES WV. HUNT, OF WEST NEW BRIGHTON, YORK.
APPARATUS FOR UNLOADING AND TRANSFERRING CARGOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,329, dated March 29, 1881.
Application filed February 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. HUNT, of West New Brighton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Apparatus for Unloading and Transferring Oargoes, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates toimprovements in the combined steam-crane and track supporting a car, by which ores and other cargoes of vessels are unloaded and transferred.
The object of my invention is to provide a movable steam -crane or series of movable steam-cranes which may be adjusted at any required distance from one or more batches of the vessel to be unloaded, and also to provide an adjustable track supporting a car or aseries of adjustable tracks supporting cars, said adjustable track or tracks being so constructed as to be movable to any required distance from the cranes, and the whole being so combined that a vessel having either one or two or more hatches may be unloaded with equal facility, whatever may be the distance of the hatches one from the other. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view from above of the entire machine. Fig. 4. is a side view of the same. Fig. 2 is an end view of one of the adjustable tracks enlarged, with an end view of the car upon the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same, but showing the adjustable track made so as to slide instead of being on wheels.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A B is the adjustable steam-crane, A being the house containing machinery, and B being the arm of the crane, attached and swinging in the usual manner, so as to hoist and carry the bucket 0 from any vessel lying atD to the car E. The said steam-craneA Bis here represented upon the tracks F G, so that the same may be moved to any required place.
H H represent the supports of the elevated tracks II, which run substantially parallel with the track upon which rests the crane A B.
K K are the secondary tracks, supported upon and crossing the elevated tracks I I, and here represented as running upon said elevated tracks on a series of trucks, J J, and at the end of the cross-track nearest to the steamcrane is the platform M, containing a switch, N, and branch track 0.
By this combination I am enabled to adjust the steam-crane A B, or the two steam-cranes, at any desired points, so as to unload a vessel having one or more hatches, whatever may be the distance of said hatches apart. The adj ustable tracks may also be moved so as to be at any desired points to correspond with the position of the cranes, so that the bucket, when hoisted outof the hatch ofthe vessel, willswing around so as to be exactly over the car upon the adjustable track.
Figs. 2 and 3 show a peculiar construction of bucket, made to set upon the car, and which is the subject of a separate patent.
I do not claim as new the movable steamcrane taken by itself, nor do I claim the ele vated tracks nor the movable secondary track, taken by themselves, nor the car upon said track. All the elements .of my combination, taken separately, are old.
That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Adjustable apparatus for transferring cargoes, consisting of a series of parallel elevated tracks carrying an adjustable secondary track crossing said series, and movable sidewise thereon, with a car running upon said secondary track, the whole being in combination with an adjustable crane movable in a direction substantially parallel with the lines of the side motion of the secondary track, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Adjustable apparatus for transferring cargoes, consisting of a series of parallel elevated tracks carrying two or more separate secondary tracks crossing said series, and separately movable sidewise thereon, together with a car running upon each secondary track, the whole being in combination with one or more adjustable cranes, each being separately movable in a direction substantially parallel with the lines of the side motion of thesecondary tracks, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. Adjustable apparatus for transferring cargoes, consisting of a series of parallel elevated tracks carrying an adjustable secondary track crossing said series, and movable sideallel with the lines of the side motion of the secondary tracks, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
O. W. HUNT.
Wise thereon, and. having at one end a platform containing a switch and one or more branch tracks, and having upon said secondary track and branch tracks one or more cars, 5 the whole being in combination with one or Witnesses:
more adjustable steam-cranes, each being sepa- G. WYLLYs BETTS,
