'I'his invention relates to packing cases of a type made of paper or other suitable sheetmaterial, for use as a shipping crate or inl any otherI capacity requiring a considerable degree `of strength It is one of the objects of the invention Vto provide a novel form and arrangement of parts by reason of which the case or crate may be assembled quickly and easily into sturdy box form without the use of -rivets or other metal 4'fasteners of anypftype. It isv another-object of Y the invention tir-'provide an improved form and arrangement of holding means which can ybe very readily applied after the casehas been ,filled and `which will serve to hold the parts very strongly in box form so as to afford the required protection for the goods for shipment without danger that thefbox may collapse or be forced open. My improved arrangement comprises preferably a novel type of insert in the formof channels made of sheet material which hold the side and end panels of the box against inward movement, serve to divide the packing space into a plurality of compartments and effect va closure. at the top of the case.
It is one of the objects of this invention to provide an improved form of parts by which added protection may be afforded to the contents of the box, this result being attained preferably by the provision of a tubular reinforcement extending across each end of the crate and preferably formed integrally with fthe end panel of the packing case.
It is another object of the invention to provide improved means for securing the side walisof the box to the cover plate 'structure so as to reinforce the construction and to hold the parts strongly andy rigidly in position.
It is another object of the invention to pro? vide improved means for effecting the final at- I tachment of the parts together whereby a short length of cord may be utilized to advantage for securing the parts in their working position. An-r other object `of the invention relates to an auxiliary securing means by which a short length of cord may be used for securing a portion of thev contents of the crate together in unit form so as to expedite handling of the goods and to in'- creasethe strength of the completely bound crate.

Referring now .to'Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, in
which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference characters. 20 indicates a blank [formed of tough heavy paper or other suitable 'sheet ymaterial and scored and cut so as to be adapted to be folded into box form. are first folded upwardly at right angles,` after!AA which the side wall panels 22 are folded up as` shown in Fig. 4, serving to bring the end tabs 24 into face to face engagement with each other. The end wall panels 23 are then folded up outside v of the end tabs 24, and yend aps 25 formed brought into position to register with each other when the parts are folded into the 'position as shown in Fig. 1.
With the parts in this condition, a pluralityl of inserts 21 are placed in position in thecase. Each of the inserts as shown is in the form of a channel madeof sheet material comprising an vintermediate web portion and two side portions.
In the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 1', two oi the channels 21 are inserted in a row with the channels opening upwardly, and two additional channels 21 are placed in position with the channels opening downwardly. The arrangement is such that the inserts limit the inward movement of the end wall panelsV and the end naps, particularly when the upwardly open channels have been filled with packages 28 or other goods las shown at the right end portion in Fig. l. Thel inserts serve to divide the packing space in the case into compartments, and also serve as top closure means for the case.
For holding the parts securely together in their operative relationship, for shipment or storage, I thread a flexible strap 29 through the slots 26 and over the intermediate inserts 21. As
is clearly shown in Fig. 5, the flexible strap 29"" is provided at one end with a small loop 39 into which a pin 3| is insertable as shown in Fig. 2 for preventing withdrawal of the strap 29 toward the left in said Fig. 2. At its opposite end portion, the strap is provided' with a plurality of loops 32 into any one of which a pin 33 may be inserted for holding the strap 29 tightened inl posi-tion so as `to prevent outward movement of the end wall panels 23 and end tabs 24. In the arrangement shown, the strap 29 is provided with tapered end portions 34 having openings therethrough for a ready attachment of a shipping tag if desired.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 2, strips 35 of `gummed tape are preferably provided vacross the top faces of the inserts 21 with their end portions turned downwardly and secured to the outer faces of the side wall panels 22 for assisting in holding the parts in condition for shipment. f
By the use of my improved construction, I am enabled to fold a packing case` into condition for receiving packages therein very quickly and easily without the use of any attachments such asrivets or the like. In the final form of packing box, the construction is very rigid so as to afford ample protection tothe goods. -The arrangement is such that the structure can be provided very cheaply and readily, the structure comprising principally a blank cut and shaped complete by a stamping operation.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the construction is the same as that above described, except that a modified form of securing means is provided for insertion through the slots 26. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, two flexible straps 36 and 31 are employed ln lieu of the single strap 29 as rst described. vEach of the straps 36 and 31 is at its outer end for receiving a pin 39 so as to engage with the outer face of the end structure/of the case'. At the inner ends of the'straps 36 and 31, loops 40 are provided adapted to receive pins 4i which extend transversely beyond the side edges of the straps so as to enable the operator quickly and easily to wind a cord4 42 about the pins for holding` the straps 36 and 31 securely tightened in position. The arrangement is such that a short length of cord 42 will sufce and such that the connection of the parts can be'efiected very easily and quickly.
In the arrangement shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the
construction is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 5 except that the flap 25 has been eliminated from the upper edge of the end wall panel 23. Instead of such flap 25', the end wall panel 23 is provided with a tubular reinforcement part 43 which is formed .integrally with the end wall panel. As is clearly shown in Fig. 8, the sheet material is scored at a plurality of points "for permitting the sheet to be folded into the desired tubular form, in which it is secured preferably by means ofv an adhesive.
In Fig. 9, ,I have shown a modified form of auxiliary securing means employed in lieu of the gummed strips 35. This arrangement comprises the provision of a series of lugs 44 in the form of 'hooks formed from the sheet material by,a cutting and pressing operation during the formation of the blank, such lugs or hooks being formed on the upper edge portions of the side wall panels 22 and the side edges of the inserts 21. When the downwardly open channels 21 have been placed in position after the packing of the case, an operator is enabled very quickly and easily to bind the inserts 21 with the side wall panels 22 by means of a cord 45 at each corner of the box, such cord being looped over the hooks or lugs and tied tightly in positioni In Fig. 11, I have shown an alternative arrangement for securing a tying cord 46 in posi-- tion. In the arrangement in Fig. 11, stitches 45 41 are provided along the edges of the side wall panels 22 and the inserts 21 so as to enable the cord 46 to be threaded quickly into position and tightened for holding the parts in position.
Another modified arrangement is shown in Fig. 50 12 for enabling me to dispense with the flexible strap 29 or its equivalent. In the box of Fig. 12, the arrangement is the same as that above described except forv the changed securing means. In the arrangement ofv Fig. 12, the end wall pana els 23 are provided with elongated straps 43 which are provided with hooks or lugs 49 similar to the hooks 44 above mentioned, the arrangement 'being such that a cord 50 can be quickly and easily looped 'into position for securing the flaps 48 tightly together so as to hold the parts in the desired closed box form. In Fig.v 13, I have shown a modified form of insert. The arrangement shown is in the form of an upwardly open channel for, use Vin lieu of one of the upwardly open channels 21 of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1. A packing case made from a pieceof flexiblesheet material scored to provide the several parts, comprising in combination a bottom panel of the sheet material. sidewall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite sides thereof, end wall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite ends thereof. end tabs formed integrally with the side wall panels at opposite ends thereof so as to be adapted to be folded in transversely next to the end wall iiaps formed integrally with said end wall panels so as to be adapted to. be folded downwardly inside of said end tabs, means comprising a plurality of inserts in the form of channel members dividing the packing space into a plurality of compartments and serving to close the upper face ofthe packing case and to hold the ends and sides of the packing case against movement inwardly beyond their normal position, said end wall panels and said end tabs and said aps lbeing provided with slots therein in position to register with each other when the parts arev folded up into box form, a flexible strap adapted to be threaded through said slots and over said' inserts, means at one end portion of the strap v for limiting the movement of the strap through panels when the ends and sides are folded up,
means comprising a plurality of inserts in the form of channel members dividing the packing space into a plurality of compartments and serving to close the upper face of the packing case and to hold the ends and sides of thel packing case against movement inwardly beyond their normal position, said end wall -panels and said end tabs being provided with slotsv therein in position to register with each other when the parts are folded up into box form, a flexible strap adapted to be threaded through said slots and over said inserts, meansat one end portion of said `strap for limiting the movement of the strap through said slots, and a pin having releasable connection with the opposite end portion of said strap in adjustable position therealong adapted by engagement with the outer face of the end wall panel to prevent withdrawal of the strap from said slots and adapted thus to hold said end wall panels and said end tabs against movement outwardly and to hold the insert members against movement upwardly and serving thus to hold the parts securely in closed box form.

A packing case made from4 a piece of flexible sheet material scored to provide the several parts, comprising in combination a bottom panel of the sheet material, lside wall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite sides thereof,.end wall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite ends thereof, end tabs formed integrally with the side wall panels at opposite ends thereof so as to be adapted to said slots, and a pin having releasable connection with the opposite end portion of said strap in adjustable position therealong adapted by engagement with the outer face of the end wall panel to prevent withdrawal of the strap from said slots and adapted thus to hold said end wall panels and said end tabs and said flaps against movement outwardly and to hold the insert members against movement upwardly and serving thus to hold the parts securely in closed box orm.
4. A packing case made from a piece ofilexible sheet material scored to provide the several parts, comprising in combination a bottom panel of the sheet material, side wallpanels formed,
integrally with the bottom panel at opposite sides thereof.` end wall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite ends thereof, end
tabs formed integrally with the side wall panels atopposite ends thereof so as to be adapted to be folded in transversely next to the end wall panels when the ends and sides are folded up, a plurality of inserts inthe form of upwardly open channels arranged in a row in said case, a plurality of inserts in the form of downwardly open channels arranged about the rst-mentioned channels respectively so as to provide a plurality with said exible member when threaded into positionto hold said end wall panels and said end tabs against movement outwardly and to holdthe insert members against movement upwardly and serving thus to hold the parts in closed -box form.
5. A packing case made from a piece of flexible sheet material scored to provide the several parts.
comprising in combination a bottom panel of the sheet material, side wall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite sides thereof, end wall panels formed integrally with the bot'- tom panel at opposite ends thereof,I end tabs ,formed integrally with the side wall panels -at opposite ends thereof so as to be adapted to be l folded in transversely next to the end wall panels when the ends and sides 'are' folded up, tubular reinforcing parts formed on the outer faces of said end wall panels at their upper edges, vsaid endvvallpanelsandsaidendtabsbeingprovided lwith openings therethrough in position to register with each other when the parts are folded up into box form, a flexible member adapted to be threaded through said openings, and means adapted by releasable engagement'with said ilexible member to secure said member against withdrawal from said openings so as to hold the end panels and the end tabs against'outwa'rd movement and thus to hold the parts securely in box form 6. A packing case made from a piece of exible sheet material scored to provide the several parts, comprising in combination a bottom panel of the sheet material, side wall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite sides thereof, end wall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite ends thereof, end tabs formed integrally with the side wall panels f at opposite ends thereof so as to be adapted to befolded in transversely next to the end wall panels when the ends and sides are folded up, said end wall panels and said end tabs being provided with openings therethrough in position to register with each other when the parts are folded into box form, top panel means of sheet material for closing the upper face of the case when the case has been packed, hooks arranged on said top panel means and said side wall panels so as to hold a cord in. position for binding the top panel means securely in closure position, a'
flexible member adapted to be threaded through said openings at the ends of the :case andpover said top panel means, and` means adapted byl releasable engagement with said flexible member to secure said member against withdrawal from said openings so as to hold the end panels and the end tabs against outward movement and to hold the top panel lmeans against upward movement and thus to hold the parts securely in closed box form.

A packing case made from a piece of iiex.- ible sheet material scored to provide the several parts, comprising in combination a bottom panel of the sheet material, side wall panels formed i-ntegrally with the 4bottom panel at opposite sides thereof, end wall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite ends thereof, end
tabs formed integrally with the side wall panels at opposite ends thereof so as to be adapted to be folded in transversely next to the end wall panels when the ends and sides are folded up, said end wall panels and said end tabs being provided with openings therethrough in position to register with each other when the' parts are folded into box form, top panel means of sheet material for closing the upper face of the case when the case has been packed, hooks formed by cutting out lug portions from the sheet material of the side wall panels and the top panel means and adapted to hold a cord in position for binding the top panel means securely in closure position, a exible member adapted tov be threaded through said openings at the ends of the case and over said top panel means, and means adaptedy by releasable y engagement with said flexible member to secure said member against withdrawal from said openings so as to hold the end wall panels and the end asoaeso tabs against outward movement and to hold the top panel means against upward movement andthus to hold the parts securely in closed box form.
8.- A packing case made from a piece'of flexible sheet material scored to provide the several parts, comprising in combination a bottom panel of the sheet material, side wall panels formed integrally i with the bottom panel at opposite sides thereof. end wall panels formed integrally with the bottom panel at opposite ends thereof, end tabs formed integrally with the side wall panels at opposite Y .ends thereof so as to be adapted to be folded in transversely next to the end wall panels when the ends and sides are folded up, means comprising a plurality of inserts adapted to be received downwardly into the case so as to close the upper face v of the'case, said end wall panels and said end tabs being provided with slots therein in position to register with each other when the parts are folded up into box form, a flexible strap adapted to be threaded through said slots and over said inserts, means at one end portion of said strap for limiting the movement of the strap through said slots,
. and a pin having releasable connection with the opposite end portion of said strap in adjustable position therealong adapted by engagement with the outer face of the end wall'panel to prevent withdrawal of the strap from said slots and adapted thus to hold said end wall panels and said end tabs against movement outwardly and to hold the insert members against movement upwardly and serving thus to hold the parts securely in closed box form.
