UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE."
GEORGE w. THOR?, OE WELLINGTON, KANsAs.
HOLDBACK.
y SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,986, dated March 15, 1881. Application filed January 19, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. THORP, of Wellington, in the county of Sumner and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gaps and Holdback Stops for Vehicle-Tongues, of which the following is a full, clear, and ,exact description.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts. f
The object of this invention is to allow the team to be placed close to the vehicle, whether Vthe horses be large or small. i
The invention consists in making the tonguecapwith screw-holes in its lower part and the `separable holdback-stop with a screw-thread upon the end of its upright arm, to screw into one ofthe screw-holes of the cap, and a hole in the end of its inclined arm, through which a screw is screwed into a hole in the cap or into the tongue, so that the stop can he ador back, as the size of the horses may require, as will be hereinafter fully described.
l A represents a tongue-cap, which may be made of any desired shape, and of wrought or cast metal, as the character of the vehicle may require. The form shown in the drawings is that usually applied to lumber and farm wagon p tongues. `In the lower part of the cap A are formed a number of screw-holes, B, into one of which the upper end of the forward or upright arm of the holdback-stop C is screwed. The end of the rear or inclined arm of the stop C has a hole formed through it to receive a screw, D, which is screwed into another of. the screw-holes B, or into the wood of the tongue when the end of the said arm projects beyond the rear end of the lower part of the cap A. With this construction the holdbackstop C can be easily and quickly moved forward and rearward, as the size or length of the horses may require, so as to have the said horses at a proper distance from the vehicle to allow their strength 'to be applied at the best advantage. With this construction, also, the stop C will be securely connected with the cap A, so that it can easily withstand the pressure of the ring E of the neck-yoke F. This construction also allows the stop C, when worn by the friction of the neck-yoke ring, to be easily replaced with a new stop.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a tongue-cap and holdback stop, the combination, with the cap A, having screwholes B, of the separable stop C and screw D, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said stop can be adjusted to bring the horses to the proper distance from the ve- GEORGE W. TH'ORP.
. hicle, as set forth.
