Patented Oct. 2, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE V PULL TOY John T. Generale, Pelham Manor, N. Y. Application April 24, 1945, Serial No. 590,001
11 Claims.
This invention relates to toys and is particularly directed to a pull-toy for children.
An object of this invention is to provide a pulltoy comprising a dog-simulating member so constructed and arranged that when the toy is at "rest, the dog assumes a sitting position with his tail down, and when the toy is pulled, the dog will stand up and the tail will simultaneously be raised.
Another object; of this invention is to provide a pull-toy on wheels provided with means to produce a sound simulating a dogs growl, at'intervals while the toy is being pulled.
Another objectof this invention is to provide an ammal-simulatingtoy provided with members simulating the hind legs and tail, said members being connected for simultaneous movement, so that movement of the tail-simulating member accompanies movement of the hind legsimulating member.
Still another object is to provide a toyofthe character described having a pull string connected to the tail-simulating member so that a pull on the's'tring will cause the tail-simulating member to stand up and will simultaneously move the hind less from a horizontal to vertical position. v
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a toy of the character described comprising an animal-simulating member having a body, front and hind legs on wheels, and provided with a tail, the arrangement being such that the animal appears normally to be in a sitting position with the hind legs projecting forwardly, and the body inclined, with the rear end of the body contacting the 1100;- and the tailprojecting rearwardly, said toybeing'provided with a pull string, and the arrangementbeing such that when. the string is pulled, the tail is swung u wardlyand the hind legs are pulled to vertical position so that the animal appearsto be standing.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a strong, compact and durable toy of the shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational bodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view or the toy shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the toy and showing the same in sitting position.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View taken online 4-4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectiOnalview taken on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, l0 designates a toy embodying the invention. The same comprises a body H, a front leg-simulating member l2 on wheels l3, and a hind 1eg=simulat ingmember IS on wheels l6. v p
The body ll maybe made from a flat piece of wood, composition or any other suitable material, and it is shaped to represent the contour ofthe body and head of a dog or other animal. The head may be painted on the outside as shown at l8 to simulate a dogs face. Said body II is formed on its rear end with a slot 20, which exview of a toy emtends to a downwardly and forwardly inclined character described which shall berelatively inexpensive to manufacture, amusing to play with, and yet practical and efiicient to a high degree.
Other objects of thisinvention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the. construction hereinafter described, and. of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
the accompanying drawing, in which is line 2| shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Said body is furthermore formed with a drilled opening 22 communicating with theslot 20 and substantially in horizontal position and somewhat below the top of the body. The drilled opening 22 terminates short of the head. The body is formed with another drilled opening 23 extending downwardly from the top and communicating with the opening 22. The slot 20 in the body forms a pair of parallel portions 25 carrying a transverse Divot pin 26 which traverses the slot 20. Disposed within slot 20 'and'pivoted to pin 26 is a lever 21, which is formed with an opening 28 to receive the pivot pin 26.- At the upper end of lever 21 is a portion 29 which may be painted or otherwise decorated to simulate a does tail.
The hind leg-simulating member 5 comprises a pair of legs 30 pivoted at their upper ends to the pivot pins 26 and located on the outside of the body H. The legs 30 are formed, adjacent their lower ends, with aligned through openings,
40 at its upper end to receive the body ll.
opposite sides of slot 4|] are parallel portions 41 'to receive the fastening means 60.
with the tail 29 projecting rearwardly. However,
' should the outer end of lever 21 be lifted to swing the lever about the pivot pin 26, the legs 30 together with lever 21 will swing to the vertical position shown in Fig. l to bring the dog to standing position.
Attached to lever 21 above the pivot pin 26 is a pull string 34. The pull string may pass through an opening 35 in the lever and may be formed with a knot 35 at its outer end received in a suitable'r'ecess 31 gouged out of the lever. The pull string 34 passes through slot 20 and passages 22, 23. A hand grip or ball 39 may be provided at the front end of the pull string. Thus when .the toy is at rest, the dog assumes a sitting position; when the dog is pulled, it will stand up and roll forwardly.
The front leg member I2 'is formed with a slot 1 which may receive nails 42 or other fastening means driven into the body to fix member 12 to the body. 7 1 V The member [2 is formed furthermore at its lower end with a slot 45 forming parallel side walls 41. Said member 12 is formed furthermore with a vertical drilled opening 48 communicating with the slots 40, 45., The parallel walls 4'! are formed with aligned openings 50 rotatably receiving a transverse shaft on which the front from said portion 62 is a portion 64 passing through opening 48 The lower end on sprin portion 64 is adapted to engage the teeth of the segmental gear 52. At the bottom of groove 40 'is a plate formed with an opening 1! through;
which spring portion 64 passes. ,'As the wheels V I3 .rotate when the toy is being pulled, the teeth of the segmental gear 52 will engage the outer end of spring portion 64 to produce a rattle simulating the growl of a dog.
- It will be understood that when the toy is in the standing position shown inFig. 1, the center of shaft 32 is sufficiently forward of the center of pivot pin 25, to preclude'the possibility of the toyremaining in upright position when the pull is relaxed instring-34.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and whichis well'adapted tQ 'm eet'the conditions of practical use. I
Having thus described my invention, what-I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent is:
