' Thelgeneralaobjectof the invention resides in theprovisioniin'adust exhaustingdevice of the above character, of a novel and efiective I means whereby the passageof air through the exhausting hood :fromthe work opening-to the outlet thereof is adjustably controlled so that, while adequate and efllcient dust removal is assured for allconditions, the amount of air drawn through thework opening .ofthe hood from thesurrounding atmosphere'may'be maintained at a minimum consistent with the instant working conditions and ,sothat the passage='of'air'through the hood maybe stopped when the'surfacing-wheel is not being used.
Accordingly, the amount of :air whichis withdrawn froma room in which oneor moresurfacing wheelsequipped'with myinventionis-or are installed may be minimized, with the resulttthat suchwithdrawalxof air may have a minimum undesirable efiect uporrthe control of the atmosphere of the room,which is of considerable importance where a considerable number of grinding wheels are installed in a room in which the atmosphere is air conditioned. i r The invention willzbe better understoodby reference to the accompanying drawing'in which- Figure 1 is a partial front elevation of a surfacing wheel equipped with my invention;

:A-dustexhausting hood'i'vof generally conventional characteristics is secured in position a conduit communicating withthe interior of the hood and spaced from-thework opening peripherally of the wheeland extending tangentially of the wheel in the direction'of rotation thereof, which direction is indicated by the arrow 8 inFigure 3.
The hood 511s also'provided with an air inlet 9 in the form of a, conduit communicating with the interior ofthehood and spaced from thework opening peripherally of the wheel and extending tangentially of the wheel in the direction opposite the direction of rotationthereof and substantially alined with the outlet 1. r
A damper-plate is disposed within the hood 5 and extends across between the side walls thereof and extends peripherally of the whee1 4 between the work opening "-6 and the outlet 1, and is disposed in continuingrelation with the outlet, and is curved correspondingly with-the periphery of the wheel, so that the concave surface thereof faces the periphery of the wheel.
The damper plate H is pivotally mounted on the side walls l2 of the hood .i, as designated at l3,with it's work opening corresponding end It spaced outwardly from the periphery of thewheel and :disposed substantially at the peripheral wall l5 of the hood andonan axisparallel to the axis of thewheel and spaced outwardly from theperipher-y thereof and disposed substantially at said worhopening corresponding end. As so pivotally mounted, the outletzcorresponding end l6 of the damper plate H is adjustable toward and away from the periphery of the wheel 4 to adjustably control the passage of air through the hood fromthe work opening 6 to theoutlet 1 between the damper plate andthe periphery of the wheel, as best shown in Figure 3, and may be adjusted. into close proximity to the wheel, as shown by dot and dash lines in-this figure, to substantially stop the passage of air between the damper plate and the periphery of the wheel when the wheel is not being used,
The :damper plate H extends beyondthe inlet 9 in the direction toward the outlet 1, so that, as it isv adjusted toward and away from the periphery, of'the wheel, it is also adjusted outof and into obstructing relation with the inlet ",9.
. As a result, adjustment of the damper ,platell spacedly shrouding the-:polishingwheel 4, and is does not have any tendency to vary the partial vacuum at the outlet 1 for the reason'that as the opening between the damper plate and the wheel is decreased, the opening of the air inlet 9 is increased and vice'versa.
The damper plate H is positioned'in the various adjustments thereof :by means of a suitable releasable clamping device, generally=designated periphery of the wheel.
The damper plate 2! is pivotally mounted on the side walls I2 of the hood 5 by means of a pivot shaft 22 journaled carried on an arm 26 secured on the pivot shaft 22 and operable through a segmental slot through one side wall of the hood 5.
The damper plate as indicated by the arrows 28 in Figure 3.
The damper plate 2| is preferably adjusted closely adjacent the wheel 4 to substantially prevent air passing through the hood to the outlet 1 in the direction opposite the direction of rotathis damper is particularly true of the dampei plate II, a relatively large ail opening being provided by this damper plate at the work opening 6.
While I have thus described my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the precise details but having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
1. In a device of combination with a rotatory surfacing wheel and relation with said inlet.
2. In a device of the character described, the
damper members toward and away from the periphery of said wheel.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a rotatory surfacing wheel and a dust exhausting hood spacedly shrouding the same and provided with a work opening and an exhausting outlet spaced from said work opening peripherally of'said wheel and extending tangentially of said wheel in the direction of rotation thereof and provided with an air inlet spaced from said work opening peripherally of said wheel and extending tangentially of said wheel in the direction opposite the direction of rotation thereof and substantially alined with said outlet, of two damper plates Within said hood and extending peripherally of said Wheel between said work opening and said outlet respectively in opposite directions With respect to said outlet and one of which is disposed in continuing relation with said outlet and extends beyond said inlet in the direction toward said outlet and said damper plates being curved correspondingly with the periphery of said wheel and independently pivotally mounted with their Work opening corresponding ends spaced outwardly from the periphery of said wheel and substantially at the peripheral wall of said hood and on axes generally parallel to the axis of said wheel and spaced outwardly from the periphery thereof and disposedin the regions of said work opening corresponding ends for adjustment of the outletcorresponding ends of said damper plates toward and away from the periphery of said wheel and the outlet corresponding end of said one damper plate out of and into obstructing relation with said inlet.
