The novel photomount construction forming the subject matter of. my present invention'is es pecially useful .at the present I time I in that it eliminates the need for metal or plastics in the construction :of frames for the display of the photomount and itspicture. Photomounts have heretofore been embossed to simulate a frame by surface ornamentation. Howeverin my present invention the photomount embodies a; frame not only in appearance but alsoinconstruction. The
frame portion of the mount is furthermore made from the same stock as that of one of the members of the photomount so that both the member and the frame ma be made from a, single piece of sheet stock. As the sheet stock from whichfthe member and. frame is made .may be of comparatively thin sheet stock, my novel con-. struction provides for the reinforcementof the, frame portion of the photomount.
In the construction illustrated in Figures 1 to: 4 of the drawings, the combined photomount and framev comprises the mask l which has its e dge portion bent forwardly at 2, thence rearwardly. at 3 and thence inwardly at 4. A hollow frameis thus formed on the edge of the mask which may be triangular in cross section as illustrated in;
Figures 1, 3 and 4 or which, by modification, may have other cross sections without departing from behind the mask I so that its edge extends to thelside 3 of the hollow frameto hold it uniformly and rigidly expanded. The inwardly'ex-E tending edge portion 4 of the mask overlapssth'e back of the insert 5 and is suitably cemented to it to add its thickness to that of the insert for the purpose of spacing the back 6 from the mask I. The back is suitably cemented to the inward- 1y extending edge portion 4 of the mask and a suitable collapsible easel *1 isin turn attached to theback 6 so that'the combined photomount and frame may be readily supportedon any fiat surf face. Inserts have heretofore had the sole function of providing the necessary space for the picture receptacle forthe mount and for this rea son its thickness had to provide a space suifif" cientvfor the insertion of, the picture proper. j In my present invention the thickness of the insert 5 is supplemented by the thickness of the inwa'rdly extending edgeporti0n of the mask so 7 thatthe thickness of the insert may be corre'-' spondingly reduced and. still provide the same depth for the picture receptacle-f y In Order to firmly hold the picturein the ture receptacle against the back of the mask l, a pad 9 in the form of a sheet member is attached to the back 6 so as'to project into the pict'ure receptacle provided between the mask and the back. This pad has substantially the same outline asthe opening in the mask to have it exert its pressure against the picture within the opening of the mask and hold the picture flat within the opening of themask.
The insertion of the picture into the picture receptacle formed behind the mask is made possible by the slit 8 in the back 6 which extends across the top of the receptacle so that the portion of the back below the slit may be slightly forced rearwardly as illustrated in dotted lines in- Figure 4 to permit thefready insertion of a smaller opening in the other of said members, said members being arranged to have the smaller opening located in front of the larger opening, one of. said members having an integral edge portion bent around the edge portion of the other member to form a hollow frame around said second named member, and a back attached to one of said members on the back thereof to close the larger of said openings and provide a tegral portion of the mask l as is the case in the structure illustrated in Figures 1 to 4. The edge portion of the modified insert H is bent forwardly at 12 and then inwardly and rearwardly at l3 against a separate mask I0. The hollow frame is thus formed by the edge portion of the insert and is held extended by the edge portion of a separate mask which abuts against the outwardly bent portion of the frame The separate mask Ill is suitably fastened to the front .of the insert and the backM is suitably fastened to the rear of the insert to have the insert space the separate mask from the back and providethe picture receptacle between them within the opening 'of the insert. A pad 9, such as is illustrated in connection with the combined photomount and frame'construction illustrated in Figures 1, 3 and 4, may also be attached to the back I4 of the photomount and frame illustrated in Figures 5 and 6. 1
It is important in this type of hollow frame when folded up from paper sheet stock that'the joints between the folded corner sections be made substantially invisible. The blank for the corner sections of the frame are cut as illustrated in Figure -7 in which the corners are cut away at l2 and I3 to permit the-folding of the rearwardly and inwardly extending edge portions 3 and 4 of the frame. -The joint in the outwardlyextending edge portion 2 is. made possibleby the V shaped slit which extends inwardly of the cut away blank as illustrated in Figure '7. One side of this V shaped slit is formed by the small V shaped flange I5A which is partially severed from the blank to provide for easy folding when pressure is brought against it. On the folding of the picture receptacle in register with the smaller of said openings.
2. A combined photo mount and frame includmg a mask member and an nsert member with 'a large opening in one of said members and a small opening in the other of said members arranged to have the member with the small opening overlap the member with the large opening, one of said members having an integral edge portionbent around the edge portion of the other member to form a hollow frame around said second named member, a back attached to the back of one ofsaid members to provide a picture receptacle in the large opening between said back and the member with the small opening, and a pad on said back held centrally in the large opening spacedly from the plane of the small opening.
3. A combined photomount and photoframe comprising a mask having an edge portion bent forwardly, thence rearwardly and thence inwardly thereof toform a hollow frame around said mask, an insert between said mask and its inwardly extending edge portion-to hold said hollow frame extended, a back member fastened against the inwardly extending edge portion of said mask to provide a picture receptacle between said .back member and said mask within said insertv by spacedly holding said back member from the rear of said mask by means of said insert and said inwardly extending edge portion of said mask.

A' combined photomount and photoframe as set forth in claim 3.111 which said back member is provided with an opening within said picture receptacle to provide for the insertion of a corner portion of the hollow frame, this V shaped I flange is automatically bent inwardly when the opposing edge provided by the V slot is forced against it on the formation of the frame as illustrated in Figure 9. The widened edge of the blank thus provided by the flange I5A forms an enlargedbearing surface against which the oppicture thru said back member into said picture I receptacle.
5. A combined photomount and photoframe comprising a mask having an opening therethru, an insert having an edge portion bent forwardly and inwardlyagainst said mask to form a hollow frame around said mask with the edge of said mask abutting the sides of said hollow frame to hold said frame extended, said insert having an opening therethru in register with the opening in said mask, and a back member attached to said insert to provide a picture receptacle between said mask and said back within the opening of said insert.
6. A hollow frame folded from a single piece of sheet stock, abutting edge portions at the corners ofthe frameand a flange'bent substantially at right angles to the abutting edges on one of said abutting edge portions of the frame.
