More specifically, it is an object of my invention .to provide a purifier which includes a thin walled container for the purifier element, together with means for locking orcompressing the cover on the container so that the cover may be quickly and. easily removed therefrom. My invention contemplates the provision of such a clamping .or locking means formed of few parts, which are substantiall concealed within the container when the cover is locked thereon, so that such parts .need not be finished or polished. e

The numeral 33 indicates an outlet boss having an inner reduced threaded portion 34 and an enlarged portion 35 separated by an annular shoulder 38. The reduced portion 34 is threaded into a cavity 31 in a connecting sleeve 38 in the container I2, so that a gasket 39 is compressed between the annular shoulder 38 and the outer surface of the bottom wall l5. Formed in the lower end of the enlarged portion 35 of the outlet boss 33 is a threaded cavity.48 communicating with an axial liquid passage 4| extending to a small opening or orifice 44 in the inner end of the outlet boss 33 and communicatin with a liquid passage 42 provided in the connecting sleeve 38. The connecting sleeve 38 includes an upper reduced threaded portion 43. The outlet boss 33 is not threaded to the reinforcing plate 2|, but is secured in place by its threaded engagement with the connecting sleeve 38 inside thecontainer l2. The boss 33 and sleeve 38 provide a duct providing a passage from without the bottom wall I5 to a point well within the container I 2.
Securing'thc reinforcing plate 2| against movement relative to the bottom wall I5 is a bolt 45 threaded into the opening in the reinforcing plate 2| so that its head engages the lower surface of the bottom wall I5. The removal of the bolt 45 provides an outlet drain through openings 20 and 25.
Positioned within the container I! adjacent the upper edge of the side wall I4 is a first engaging shoulder means or member or ring 48. The rin 48 may be formed in a complete annulus or a substantially complete annulus of a ribbon of sheet iron, for example, of a thickness substan-' tially greater than the thickness of the container walls l4, l5, and I8 and suillcient to transmit over substantially the entire circumference of the side wall H the force involved in securing or clamping the cover l3 to the container I2. The ring 48 may conveniently be stamped to the desired shape, as best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4, which includes upper and lower vertical legs 41 and 48, respectively, portions 48 and 58 extending inwardly from the adjacent extremities of the legs 41 and 48,.respectively, and a central vertical portion 5| extending between the portions and 58. Formed in the ring 48 is a plurality of bayonet slots 52,-illustrated in the drawing as three in number, each including a vertical entrance opening 53 formed in the inwardly extending portion 48 and central vertical portion 5| and communicating with a circumferential opening 54 formed in the central vertical portion 5|.

sion-transmitting means is provided in the form of a spider or spanning member 51, which includes a central portion 58 and three projecting radial legs 58 extending therefrom. Each of the legs 58 has an upper surface 88 curving outwardly and inwardly and a horizontal lower surface 8|, and is provided at its extremity with an engaging portion 82 of dimensions to pass through the entrance opening 53 and along the circumferential opening 54 of any one ofthe bayonet slots 52. The central portion 58 is provided with a threaded opening 83 extending vertically therethrough. The spider 51 may conveniently be cast of iron and requires no polish or finishing, since it, like the ring 48, is concealed within the container.
The cover I 3 is formed of metal'of a thickness greater than the walls of the container I2 and cent the opening 85. The cover I3 may b conveniently shaped by a stamping operation.
A purifier element or cartridge assembly within the container is indicated by the numeral 88. The urifier element "includes top and bottom imperforate plates or walls 88 and 18, respectively, the peripheral edges of each of which are formed U-shaped in cross section to embrace the ends of a cylindrical wall member 11. The cylindrical wall member 1| is provided with a plurality of openings "therein, which may be conveniently formed by slitting the wall of the element 88 and pressing the portions adjacent the slits outwardly The bottom wall .18 oi the purifier element 88 is provided with a central opening 14, registering with a central opening of a cup 15 and a central opening of a lower cap 18. The bottom wall 18, cup .15, and-cap 18 are clamped together between an annular shoulder 11 and an outwardly directed end flange 18 formed by upsetting or swaging the end of an inlet sleeve'19 extending through the registering openings. Projections 11a are formed on the lower surface of the shoulder 11 and extend through radial openings in the'bottom wall 18, cap 18 and cup 15, thus securing the clamped assembly against relative rotation of its parts. Similar projections 11b are formed on the upper surface of the shoulder 11. The inlet sleeve 18 is provided with interior threads for reception of the reduced portion '43 of the connecting sleeve 88.
The numeral 88 indicates a conduit or liquid collecting means or member positioned axially ofthe purifier element 88 and extending upwardly in the purifier element.
As illustrated in the drawing the conduit 88 may be formed by rolling into cylindrical form a single layer 8| of'fabric of one or more thicklesser width than the perforate sheet :2, is laid upon the perforate sheet, and the two' are rolled together so that the perforate metal sheet pro vertical wall I4 is then bent inwardly over the upper edge of the vertical leg 41, as indicated by;
the numeral 55, and inwardly against the inner surface of the upper vertical-leg '41, as shown by the numeral 58, thus securing the .ring 48 in place within the container |2..
A second engaging means or member or tenvidesan outer' perforate wall 83 and an inner perforate wall 88a with the fabric layer 8| therebetween. The fabric layer 8| is longer than the perforate sheet 82 so that itsends project beyond theends of the cylinder formed by rolling them togethen-and these projecting end portions of the fabric layer are pressed around the cylinder thus formed. More than one fabric layer and perforate sheet may be employed if desired,
the layers and sheets being stacked in alternating relationship and rolled together. V
An upper cap 84 is pressed upon the upper end of this cylinder and the end portion ofthe fabric layer around the cylinder, and the lower cap 15 with the inlet sleeve 19 is pressed upon the lower end of the cylinder, and the end portion of the fabric layer therearound, thus preventing any severed threads in the fabric layer from passing into the conduit 85 and preventing the perforate sheet 82 and the fabric layer 8|v from unrolling. The cap 18, cup 15, and bottom wall 15 of the purifier element are secured together by upsetting the end of the inlet sleeve 19 before the bottom wall 15 is connected to the cylindrical wall member 1|.
The metal walls 88 and 83a are made of a length less than the distance between the top and bottom walls 58 and of the purifier element 58, so that the liquid collecting member 80 terminates below the top of the purifier element 88, and liquid is thus prevented from flowing to.
the collecting member without passing through the purifier medium around this member, even though such medium should settle andseparate a slight distance from the top wall 59. An upper cup 85 may be secured to the top wall 58 with its lower edge extending below the top of the liquid collecting member 80 to further prevent such unpurified flow.
With the purifier assembled as illustrated in Fig. l. in order to remove the purifier element 55 and replace it, it is necessary only that the bolt 55 and cover I; be removed and the spider 51 be rotated until the engaging portions 62 of the spider 51 can be moved in the bayonet slots 52 to the entrance openings 58, whereupon the spider 51 may beremoved from the container 12. Or the bolt 56 may be turned sufilciently to completely release the pre'ssural engagement of the spider portions 52 with the upper walls of the openings 54, and to lift the bolt head somewhat from the gasket 61, after which-the bolt may be slightly lifted'and at the same time rotated to turn the spider to a new radialposition in which it can be freely removed through the open end of the container. The bolt may then be used to lift as an assembly both the cover and spider from the container.
Thereafter by simply rotating the purifier element 58, it may be disconnected from the connecting sleeve 88 and lifted from the container 12. A bail 93 may be swingably mounted in a ring 84 upon the top wall 88 of the purifier element 55 to facilitate the rotation and elevation of the purifier element 55. The installation of a new'purifier element .88 requires only the lowering of the element into the container i2 and the threading of the cylindrical sleeve 18 in its lower end upon the connecting sleeve 35. Downwardly converging, inwardly facing indentations or shoulders 88 are formed in the lower portion of' the side wall II and in the downwardly converging wall l5 to guide the lower end of the purifier element centrally in the container 12 during its insertion therein. Indentations. stops, or shoulders 81 in'the converging wall 15 define'a vseat for the bottom wall 18 of the purifier element 58 when it is installed. As shown in Fig. i when the inlet sleeve 19 of the cartridgeassembly 68 is screwed downwardly upon the threaded reduced portion 43 of the connecting sleeve 88 the peripheral edge of the bottom wall "contact of the flange 18 of the inlet sleeve 18 with the large diametered body portion of the connecting sleeve 88. This relationship of the parts 5 results in the cartridge assembly 58 being tightly clamped to the casing 12, preventing relative vibration of the cartridge assembly and container and fracture or deformation of the connections therebetween.
Thereafter the spider 51 is placed upon the container with the engaging portions passing through the entrance openings 53 of the bayonet slots 52 in the ring 55. The spider 51 is then rotated until the engaging portions 62 pass into the circumferential openings 54 of the bayonet slots 52 to the position illustrated in Fig. 3. Thereafter the cover 13 is placed on the container and the bolt 88 is threaded into the spider 51, clamping an annular gasket 95 between a peripheral flange of the cover l3 and the inturned portion 55 of the container 12, and clamping the gasket 61 between the head of the bolt 55 and the cover 13. The cover I3 is thus locked'in fluidand also provides means for threading the inlet boss into the container assembly. The reinforcingplate 2| likewise provides the required rigidity to the thin bottom wall 15 of the container for supporting thereon the purifier element 58. This reinforcing plate 21 is securely held in place by its threaded engagement with the inlet boss 25 and the bolt 4-5.
In operation, the oil entering through the ini let boss'. 26 fills the clearance space around the purifier element 58 within the walls of the container' l2 and cover IS. The oil passes radially inwardly through the openings 12 in the cylindrical wall 1| of the purifier element and through the fabric layers 89 and 90 and the screen cylinder 9| into the purifying material 92 which may be fibrous material. The purified oil passes inwardly through the fabric layer or layers 5| and the perforate metal walls 83 and 83a to the interior of the oil collecting means 80.
Thecon'struction of the liquid collecting means 80 eliminates the necessity for a central pipe extending throughout the purifier element 58 and permits the installation of the purifier element 58 within the container by making only a single connection between them.
The considerable force required to securely .clamp the cover It in place is transmitted through the bolt 58 and spider 51 to the ring which applies it uniformly to substantially the entire circumference ,of the thin walled container l2. The construction hereinbefore decribed permits the container 12 to be made of thin metal, for example, s'heet steel of about shape in cross section not only provides space tacts the stops 81 prior to and preventing con-' between the'vertical wall l4 of the container and the central vertical portion 5| of the ring 46 into which the engaging portion 62 of the legs 59 may project, but also strengthens the ring 46 against deformation and increases its resistance to the axially directed forces imposed when the cover is clamped to the container I2.
The termination of the collecting member 80 substantially below the top plate 69 of the purlfier element 68 and the upper surface of the purifying material 92 prevents the passage of unpurified oil into the collecting means 80 and insures that, even though the purifying material 92 may become compacted and separated a short distance from the upper plate 69, no oil can enter the collecting means 80 without first being purified by passage through some of the purifying material 92.
It will be seen that by providing the reinforcmy invention makes possible a purifier unit in-' cluding a thin walled container, while providing means for securely attaching thereto, and in liquid-tight relationship therewith, inlet and outlet bosses, facilitating the installation of the purifier in the oil circulating system of an engine, and a purifier unit in which the purifier element is supported in fixed relation to the thin walled container without undue stresses upon such container. I
The inlet and outlet bosses 26 and 33 are made of the same dimensions so that they are interchangeable. However, only one of them is provided with the small opening or orifice 44. If it is desired to subject the container I! to the full pressure of the oil circulating system, the boss with the orifice 44 is employed as an outlet boss, where it restricts the flow of oil through the container l2 so that onlythe desired proportion of the oil flowing through the oil circulating system is passed through thepurifier. However, if it is desired to subject the container l2 to a pressure less than the pressure in the oil circulating system, the boss with the orifice 44 therein is employed as an inlet boss. I While that embodiment of my invention hereinbefore illustrated and described is fully capable of performing the objects and providing the advantages primarily stated, and, while the usefulness of my invention has been illustrated by its application to a purifier for use in oil circulating systems of internal combustion engines, my invention-is not limited to the embodiment hereinbefore illustrated and described or to such use.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a liquid purifier, the combination of: a cylindrical casing open at one end and having at the other end an end wall provided with relatively small inlet and outlet apertures, one
of which is centrally located in said .end wall; a duct means seated in said central aperture; a purifying cartridge assembly having a central conduit and adapted to be readily removably secured to said duct means with said conduit in communication with said central aperture, said cartridge assembly being dimensioned to provide a relatively small clearance space between it and the end and side wall of said casing;
stops on the inner surface of said casing formed by indentation of said casing and facing said open end and disposed to limit movement of said cartridge assembly toward said end wall; inwardly facing guides on the inner surface of said casing formed-by indentation of said casing and converging inwardly and toward said end wall adapted to guide said cartridge assembly into axial alignment with said casing as said assembly moves toward said closed end and into contact with said stops; and a readily removable cover secured to the open end of said casing.
2. In a liquid purifier, the combination of: a cylindrical casing open at one end and having at the other end an end wall provided with relatively small inlet and outlet apertures, one of which is centrally located in said end wall; a duct means seated in said central aperture; 9. purifying cartridge assembly having a central conduit and adapted to be threadedly secured to said duct means with said conduit in communication with said central aperture, said cartridge being dimensioned to provide a. relatively small clearance space between it and the end by indentation of said casing and converging inwardly and toward said end wall adapted to guide said cartridge assembly into axial alignment with said casing as said assembly moves toward said closed end into position to be threadedly secured to said duct means; and a readily removable cover secured to the open end of said casing.
3. In a liquid purifier, the combination of a cylindrical casing open at one end and having at the other end an end wall provided with relatively small inlet and outlet apertures, one of which is centrally located in said end wall; a duct means seated in said central aperture; a purifying cartridge assembly having a central conduit and adapted to be threadedly secured to said duct means with said conduit in communication with said central aperture, said cartridge assembly being dimensioned to provide a relatively small clearance space between it and the end and side wall of said casing," stops on the inner surface of said casing formed by indentation of said casing and facing said open end and disposed to limit the threaded movement of said cartridge assembly toward said end wall; and a readily removable cover secured to the open end of said casing.
4. In a purifying device, the combination of: a housing; inlet and outlet fittings adapted for projection through said housing, each of said fittings including a boss with a liquid passage thereof said bosses, whereby said housing is clamped between said sleeve and said boss; an inner shell having imperforate end and perforate side walls; a pervious conduit centrally disposed in said shell and extending from one of said end walls to adjacent the other of said end walls,
said conduit comprising a layer of fabric and a perforate sheet rolled into a cylinder; an inlet sleeve connecting one of said end walls and said conduit and having a liquid passage therein adapted for communication with said liquid passage in said connecting sleeve, said inlet sleeve being adapted for threaded engagement with said connectingsleeve, whereby said inner shell is supported in said housing; and a fibrous material between said conduit and said side walls and between the end of said conduit and that one of said end walls adjacentthereto.

said end wall; a plurality of inwardly facing guides on the inner surface of said casing formed by indentation of said casing and converging inwardly and towards said end wall, said guides being disposed between and extending above said stops and being adapted to guide said cartridge assembly into axial alignment with said casing as said assembly moves towards said closed end and into contact with said stops; and a readily removable cover secured to the open end of said casing.
6. In a purifier device, the combination of: a housing; inlet and outlet fittings secured to said housing and communicating with the interior thereof; an inner shell having imperforate end and perforate side walls; means having a passage therein on one of said end walls adapted for releasable connection to one of said fittings, whereby said inner shell is supported in said housing; a pervious conduit centrally disposed in and terminating within said shell and connected to said means, said conduit comprising a layer of fabric and a perforate sheet rolled. into a cylinder, said layer of fabric being folded over said perforate sheet at one end of said cylinder; a clamping member secured on one end of said cylinder and clamping said folded portion of said fabric layer against said cylinder, said member having an imperforate end portion closing the end of said cylinder; a cup secured to one of said end walls and extending inwardly of the adjacent end of said conduit; and a fibrous material between said conduit and said side walls and between the end of said conduit and that one of said end walls adjacent thereto.
7. In a purifier device, the combination of: a housing; inlet and outlet fittings secured to the said housing and communicating with the interior thereof; an inner cartridge having imperforate end and perforate side walls. said side walls comprising inner and outer perforated relatively rigid retaining sheets and an intervening fibrous fabric layer confined between the said sheets; means having a passage therein mounted in one of said end walls and adapted for releasable connection with one of said fittings; a liquid conduit connected'with said passage means and comprising perforated relatively rigid inner and outer retaining walls and an intervening fibrous fabric layer held between said inner and outer walls, said conduit being disposed within said cartridge; and intervening purifying material within said cartridge and enclosing said conduit.
8. A combination according to claim 7 wherein cups are carried within said cartridge between. said imperforate end walls and adjacent the 0pposite ends of said conduit, said cups extending alongside the end portions of said conduit to prevent direct passage of fluid along said end walls to said conduit ends.
9. A combination according to claim '7 wherein said conduit comprises a fabric sheet rolled within a perforated sheet into cylindrical form, said perforated sheet providing the inner and outer walls of said conduit and confining said fabric sheet between its convolutions.
10. In a purifier device, the combination of: a
cartridge adapted to be disposed in a housing and having imperforate end walls and perforate side walls, said side walls comprising inner and outer perforate, relatively rigid retaining sheets, and an intervening fibrous fabric layer confined between said sheets, one of said end walls being provided with a passage; a liquid conduit connected with the end wall provided with said passage, and communicating with said passage, said conduit comprising perforate, relatively rigid inner and outer retaining walls and an intervening fibrous fabric layer held between said inner and outer walls, said conduit being disposed within said cartridge; and intervening purifying material disposed within said cartridge and enclosing said conduit.
11. A combination as in claim 10 wherein means is disposed within said cartridge at said passage for mounting said one of said end walls on a support, said means providing a passage communicating with said liquid conduit.
12. A combination as in claim 10, including passage means mounted in said passage in said one of said end walls, said passage means being adapted for releasable connection with a fitting having a passage and carried by said housing.
13. A combination as in claim 10 wherein said conduit comprises a fabric sheet rolled within a perforate sheet into cylindrical form, said .perforate sheet providing the inner and outer walls of said conduit and confining said fabric between its convolutions.
14. A combination as in claim 10 wherein cups are carried within said cartridge between said imperforate end walls and adjacent the opposite ends of said conduit, said cups extending alongside the end portions of said conduit to prevent direct passage of fluid along said end walls to said conduit ends.
