PROCESS OF STITCHING AND TYING PAMPHLETS AND PAPERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,966, dated February 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, STERLING ELLIOTT, a citizen Of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county Ot' Sul'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Process ot' Stitching and Tying Pamphlets, Papers, Src., and I hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specitication.

The Object of my invention is to so form the knot and stitches as to render them capable Ot being more quickly made than can the present form, which requires that the thread shall be passed through the materia-l twice foreach stitch, Whereas in my improved method it is only necessary1 that the. thread should pass through the lnaterial twice for any number Ot' stitches, as the intermediate Ones are formed by the interlocking of one part of the thread into the Other through the material, as is clearly shown by the drawings.

Figure l shows the rst step to be taken in the formation ot' my improved stitch, which consists ot' drawing through the material a series of lOOps, the first somewhat longer than the succeeding Ones. This long loop is next doubled upon itself, as shown in Fig. 2. Then a suitable hook is inserted through this doubled loop, pushed forward through all the intermediate loops, and tinally hooked into the last one, which is the end of the thread. Upon being withdrawn itis made to carry iwith it the thread, which leaves the stitch as shown in Fig. 3.

Figs. 5, 6, and 7 showthe Operation of turning the doubled loop to form a square knot,

which is the last loop, through all the other loops, thus forming the stitches and knot at one operation, substantially as shown.
