ROTARY PUMP Original Filed Nov 19,, 1942 FIG. I
FIG 4 LUINVENTOR M ATTORNEY.
Patented May 29, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OF FICE ROTARY rum Adolf von Wangenhcim, Detroit, hitch. assignor to Detroit Lubricator Company, Detroit, Mich, a corporation of Michigan Original application November 19, 1942, Serial no.
Divided and this application March 1c, 1944, Serial No. 526,750
Claims. (circa-21s) This invention relates to ne and useful improvements in rotary pumps and more particularly to pump supporting and sealing structure.
An object of the invention is to provide a pump structure which may be readily assembled with accuracy in commercial quantity production.
Another object is to provide eificient means for sealing a pump casing around the drive shaft.
Another object is to eliminate strain or warpage of the pump casing upon clamping of the same to its supporting structure.
Other and further objects will be apparent from the following description.
The invention consists in the improved construction of parts and their cooperative relation to be more fully described hereinafter, and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out V showinternal construction, and
Fig. 3 is a detail view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail of the frictional clamping means.
Referring to the drawing by'characters of-reference, l designates generally a body or housing member having a chamber 2 formed by a cuplike cover member 3 having a surrounding flange t which seats in and against the base of an annular recess in a flat chamber wall 5. Extendingv from the wall 5 and away from the chamber 2, there is a hollow extension .8 having a bore 1 extending longitudinally therethrough. The bore 1 hasacylindrical portion 1" opening into the chamber 2 through substantially the middle pointcf the wall 5 and has, intermediate its ends, an enlarged diameter portion 8 and a bearing or guide portion .9 of reduced diameter relative to the diameter of the bore portion 1*. Within the chamber 2 there i -a. pump casing It having end closure plate members i I, l 2 between which there is clamped a hollow annular stator member IS. The end closure member l2 has an external flat face it which seats against the flat wall 8. Projecting'from the face it there is. a hollow extension it which extends through the bore I and fits the guide portion 8.v The' extension' li, ex
cept for its flt in the portion 8, is in oircumferentially spaced relation to the wall of the bore 1 so as to provide for liquid flow in the bore I around the extension l5. The passageways l6 are provided in the wall of the hollow extension 6 to permit communication between opposite sides of the portion 9. Joumaled in the pump casing extension i5 and projecting therefrom, there is a pump drive shaft il which extends out of the housing extension 8. Surrounding the shaft H and screw-threaded, as at It, into the outer end of the bore 1. there is a closure member is which tightly clamps the marginal edge portion of a sealing member" against an outward facing shoulder 2| in the extension 6. The member 20 is preferably of flexibly resilient sheet material, such, for example, as Ameripol having inserted fabric. On the shaft ii there is a two-part thrust member 22 which has a rotary fit on the shaft I1 and between the parts of which there is tightly clamped the inner peripheral portion of the annular sealing member 20. The thrust member 22 is urged toward the extension l5 by a coil spring 28 which abuts against the closure member ID and urges the thrust member l5 to take the thrust of spring 23.
The drive shaft l7 extends through the casing ID in eccentric relation to the internally cylindrical surface of the stator member l3 and is journaled in the end'closure member ll. Keyed on the shaft l1 and fitting between the closure members III ii, there is a rotor 28 of annular form and concentric with shaft ii. The rotor 29 has tangential engagement with the cylindricalsurface of stator it as at 30, see Fig. 1.
Accurate tangential sliding fit is provided by cut or formed to provide a diametrical flat portion which, being-transverse to the above mentioned extended line, will permit slight radial movement of the stator toward and irom the rotor. Any such radialmovement is. however. prevented after tight tangential contact is obtained and this is accomplished bymeans of the pin 32 which has a tight fit in alined apertures in the closure members H and i2 and also has a tight flt in the bore of a bushing 33, which bore is alined with the closure member apertures. .The
bushing bore is drilled or formed after the rotor and. stator are in tight tangential contact so that shaft l1 and in the opposite faces of the rotor. In
- the grooves 35 there are ring members'38 which support the inner ends of the vane members 31 and hold them in contact withthe eccentric in-.
ternally cylindrical face of the stator l3.
Opening from chamber 2 into the end closure 7 member 8! substantially parallel to the plane'of the rotor 29, there is an inlet conduit 39 which terminates adjacent-the point of tangential contact 30 and in registry with across passage 40 in the stator I3 and the abutting port on of mem-. ber IL, This cross passage flilopens into the. pump inlet port which is in the form of arcuate recesses 4| in the inner faces of the end members ii, I2, respectively, and which are in registry with the crescent-shaped space between the rotor and the stator. n the opposite side of the point 30 from inlets M, there isan exhaust or outlet port which comprises arcuate recesses 65 in the members H and I2. 3 From the exhaust recess 36 in plate member [2, see Fig.3, there isan exhaust outlet port 52 which opens through the closure member face M into registry with an outlet passageway 53 opening through .the fiat chamber wall 5 of the housing ,member I, The exhaust so that the vane members 31 are urged by pump pressure against the stator wall.
' asrmeo strainer member II being or an external diameter to provide a clearance space around its external circumference within the cover member 55. This strainer member may be composed of an inner cylinder of foraminous material 59, such as wire screening, which serves as a'base or support for a cylindrical pad of filter material 50. The cover member 3 is tightly clamped and sealed in position against the wall 5 by means of clamping screws 6| which engage the cover member flange 4. The fuel inlet to the housing member i aroimd the strainer member 58 is through a port 53 which opens through the wall 5 from an inlet passage- 7 way in the housing member I and connected to a pipe 64 leading from the source of fuel supply. 7
The pump outlet 53 may connect to a. pressure regulatingvalve 66 having a by-pass return conduit 18 leading into the housing member 6 for connection therein either to a return pipe 8'2 leading back to the source of fuel supply or to a port 85 discharging into the cover member 2 around 7 the strainer member 58.- J
