This invention relates to footwear, and more particularly to a sandal for use in hiking, on the beach, or at home, and which will be extremely comfortable to wear and non-injurious to the feet.

One object of this invention is to provide a sandal of the above nature having a wide adjustable combined heel and instep counterbinding surrounding the ankle, and a two-part forward vamp binding surrounding the ball of the foot, said sandal being open at the heel, instep, and toe.

A further object is to provide a device of the above nature, which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appear-- -ance, and very efficient and durable in use.

With these and other objects inview, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3,3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 is an exploded view showing the develop ment of the sections of the binding members before they are assembled-with the buckles upon the sole of the sandal.

Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral ID indicates a sole having a heel H and an instep l2.

The sandal is provided with a unitary rear bindw is attached to a flexible loop 2| secured to the flap apertured narrow strap 30 having hole 3|, said strap being secured to the flap 25 as by a V- shaped row of stitches 36a. The holes 3| of the strap 30 are adapted to selectively receive a hinged tongue 34 of a rectangular buckle 33, which is secured to the flap 24 as by a flexible loop 32, attached to said flap as by stitche 32a.

While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it will be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention ineludes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:

In a sandal, a sole, a rear counterportion having a heel-embracing section, a pair of forwardly-extending relatively wide flaps for embracing ing l3 having a central heel counter loop M adapted to embrace the rear of the heel, a pair of wide round-ended instep flaps I5, l6, and a pair of downwardly-extending bottom sections l1, it having straight edges which are adapted to be secured to the sole ID as by rows of straight stitches Ila, l8a, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

The instep flap I6 is provided with an apertured reduced strap l9 secured to said flap [6 as by a V-shaped row of stitches I911. The strap [9 is provided with holes 20 for selectively re-,

ceiving a hinged tongue 23 of a buckle 22 which substantially the entire top of the instep of the wearer, a pair of depending bottom sections attached to said sole, one of said flaps having a relatively narrow apertured strap secured thereto, a relatively narrow tongue buckle for cooperation with said narrow apertured strap, and flexible means for connecting said buckle to the other of said flaps; and a forward vamp portion comprising a pair of wide side flaps for embracing substantially the entire top of the fore part of the wearer's foot and secured at their bottom ends to said sole, and a relatively narrow strap and cooperating tongue buckle secured to said vamp flaps.
