May 8, 1945.` w. E. BURNS GAN Filed May 2, 1942 INVENTOR lA/u. Poleo E. .5u/ems BY /2 or ATTORN EYS` Patented May 8, l1945 .l
, Wilfoxr'dE.` BurnaBurlingame, Calif., assigner to M. J. .Bf Company, San Francisco, Calif., a.
`corporation of Delaware Appleman@ May 2, 1942, seria1N0.441,519 3 claims. (o1. 22o-.54)
This `invention relates to improvements in tearing strip cans, and it has reference `more parit becomes necessary that some means beem-v ticularly to metal cans of that kind having the tearing strip locatedwithin the outer layer of a triple layer.` collar that is formedes a part of and which encircles the can body, andwherein the removable end closure of the can is double seamed to a flange that continues from the top edge of the outer layer of the folded` collar and is released for opening the can, by the 4removal of the tearing strip.
In cans of this kind, which heretofore have been made in accordance with the disclosures of my U. S. Patent No. 1,615,930, issued February l, 1927, the opposite end portions of the metal blank which forms the cylindrical body of the can,are joined together in a soldered side seam ofthe lock and lap type. The locked portion of this seam extends fromnear the seamingflange at the lower end of the can body, tothe lower edge"vv of the triple layer collarat the top end. Beyond the lower end of the lock seam, the end `portions ployed to attach or anchor that end of the outer layer of the folded collar from which the tongue extendsfto the underlying layers in order that the joint will remain tightly closed, especially i, when an outward pull is applied to this` portion bythe initial winding of the strip onto the key.
\ outer layer or fold of the collar is formed with a Furthermore, the anchoring of Athis corner` is most desirable, in order to insure the integrity of the` sidesearn at this particular location and p to prevent the corner ofthe fold springingoutward `by reason of the 4natural tendency yof the folded collar to straighten out, or due to the outward pull on the tearingl strip.
It will be explained further that in some can of this kind, using the soldered side seam,4 the 1 short extension just below the tongue, but sepaof the blank are joined together ina lap joint,` While beyond the top end, the parts` are joined` in a lap seam, with certain of the col-larforming layers disposed in `end to end relationship.
In the disclosures of the above mentioned patent, it has been explained and shown that the opposite ends of the body blank are so cut and notched at locations alined with those parts to be embodied in the triple layer collar that after the folding of the blank tovform the collar, and incident to the side seaming of the tbody, `the tongue, which extends fromone end of the tearing strip to receive the strip winding key, will overlap with the opposite end of the` tearing strip atthe outside of the body. Likewise, at the inside of the can, one end portion ofthe innerlayer cf the metal forming the folded collar V*will overlap with the other end portion butextends to the opposite side of the side seam than thatto which the tearing strip extends; The end edges `of the underlying layers of .the collarabut each other in a-joint that is angularlyinclined relative to the side seam, the 'parts being held by the soldering of the side seamwith the tongue left free for reception of the strip winding key i thereto.
In carrying out the present invention, it is intended` to employ substantially the same side seam joint in the can body as illustrated in the above patent,` but without the employment of solder to hold the seam closed.f Therefore, to
`make it a practical and satisfactory construction for the purposes to` which the can is to be put,
rated from the tongue, which is designed to overlapthe joint and thus, `when soldered, to tie together the ends of the outerlayer of the folded collar across the side seam. This tie` ordinarily `holds the collarends at the joint against outwardspringing at the side seam regardless of their tendency to do sov because of the increased stiffness of the folded portion of the body blank.
In View of the foregoing, it has been the principal object ofthis invention to devise a practical and satisfactory means for the anchoring of the free end of the outer layer of the folded collar to the under layersthereof in order to insure a satisfactory joining of the parts in the side seaming operation, andto insure the holding' of the `seam against opening up incident to the outward pull of the tongue inthe removal of the tearing strip from the collar. y
`Morespecifically stated,` theA objects of this invention reside in the provision of an `anchoringr tab for the outside end of the outer layer of the folded collar in a can of the kind described, and in the disposing and securing of this tab beneath `the inner layers of the fold whereby to prevent any opening or springing of the joint or seam at this particular location.
Other objects `of the invention reside in the details of `the body blank, in thefolding of the collar forming portion and in the manner of joining the ends of the blank to complete the side seam connection.
In accomplishing these and other objects ofthe invention, Ihave provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying `drawing where- Fig. lis a side view of a can embodyingthose features of construction on which this invention is based.

been folded to form the collar -band along Vone edge thereof. l
Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross .section `on .the line 6 6 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged View of a portion -of .the
folded blank, showing the anchor tab after being clinched about .the end yedge of the two under layers of the fold. Y
vReferring more in detail to the drawingl designates the can body and .2 is the upper end closure secured theretothrough the 'mediacy of the double seam designated at 3. Formed about the upper end portion of the body is a triple folded collar, comprising an outer layer 4, an
' intermediate layer 5, and the inside layer, which latter is a continuation of the main body blank.
`The upper edge of ythe'outer layer of the folded collar extends-beyond the top limits of the collar and is contained in the double seam 3; this flange being designated in Figs, 3 and 4 by reference numeral 3V. Y
Formed in the outer layer of the fold of the collar throughout its length and extending cir- 'cumferentially of the body in the inished can, is
the tearing strip y8, setoi between parallel lines -of scoring y9--I3. vOneend sof Ithe stripl extends beyond the side searnl and forms a tongue ID adapted to have a key applied thereto for the removal of the *strip to detach vthe 'end closure. This tongue, as seen in Fig. 1, extends across and beyond the side seam, overlapping with the other end portionl of theouter fold of the collar.
"In Fig. 4, I have illustrated details of the cuttingfor formation 'ofthe can body blank. At the opposite end edges ofthe blank I I are hook'flanges Il2'an`d I3,\desgned to be bent back to -form hooks that can be intereng'agedvto form the locked side seam I4. These flanges terminate short 'of the upper'iedge kof the blank, .and at .the tongue end of the `blank, jjust 'abovet'he 4endof the yflange I2 is a'shallow, V-shaped notch defined `by the notch edge portions I5 and I6. Immediately above this notch, and parallel tokthefton'gue, is a short extension .or anchor tab I8, and immediately above .this is .the tonguefil. Above'the level of the tongue -jl-Ilis the ange .3f 4previously mentioned, which forms a part :of the double -seam whereby the closureis securedbin place. The upper limit .of the angel is denedby ashort slit I 3' which, as seen in Fig. 4, is located at .the `saine horizontal levelzas the .upper .end =of .the flangel I2.
At the end of thexbody .blank .opposite that from which .thetongue 4-Iilextends, is a shallow V-shaped notch .of .the .same dimensions `as that ilocking tab I8 is bent inwardly and clinched about the registered edges I5 and I6 and then beneath the adjacent edges of the two under layers of thefoldso thatiteifects a holding connection as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. At the time of clinching thetab "IIL-or lsubsequently thereto, the hook flanges .I2 .and I3 are bent back, one to the inside and one to the outside of the blank. In the foldflngofr the flange I3 back upon the body material,
a vshort tab Ix just above the slit I3', is left projecting, asseen .in Fig. 5. Later thev blank is Ibent about` a forming horn into the cylindrical body formvof the can, and these backturned anges are engaged, interlockedandclamped together as is'usua'l in the formation of the side Seam of a can'. The parts are so brought together Y at :the side seam that the extending tongue Il) rst mentioned. but disposedclose 4to' the top vedge ofthe body blank by `the distance of half the width ofthe notch. .This last notch is defined by theedgesz' and..2.I, -and these edges are l.parallel respectively to the edges I6 and I5 of thefirst notch. The collar is folded while the blank is in .the fiat, by first folding the vtopelge portion overlapsthe outer side of the opposite end portion of the tearing strip, as illustrated Iin Fig. 1, and as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. In this operation, the tab 18x, is lapped across the seam as shown in Fig. 3. parts 'together rto .close .the side seam effects a connection Vthat is'very substantial and secure.
With the above described manner of cutting the b1ank,folding the collar and joining the ends ,of the body blank in the side seam, the layers of metal forming the collar will assume the relative positions of-Fig'. 3, and the anchor tab I8 will effectively and securely retainthe lower edge corner of t'hefolded collar againstiany possible outward springing that would be incident to the outward pull therein that will be applied by the winding of a strip ontoa key.. I
While thisinvention has/been described in c onnection with a can having an unsoldered kside seam, itis vanticipated'that this detail may be used in cans using a soldered side seam, or where other composition may be used to effectively close the seam when'an airtight can is desired.
vHaving `thus 'describedmy invention, what I claim as new therein and vdesire to secure by Letters Patent is: j l. A can ofthe character described having its body portion formed from a blank that has one edge portion'thereof` folded upon itself to form triple 1layercollar about an end of the can body and .there beinga tearing strip set off in the outer layerV of the foldedcollar, terminating at one end in .atongue that extends beyondA the end edge of the collar at'one end of the blank; said blank `having its ends joined together, with the said tongue at one end vof the collar overlapping the opposite end of the collar at Ithe outside of the can, and there being an anchor tab extending from the' end edge .of the` outer fold of the collar immediately below the tearing strip and clinched beneath the corresponding edge of an underlying layer of the folded collar.
Thus, the clamping of the side of the can body; said blank being joined at its ends, with end portionsof the inner and outer layers of the fold in overlapping relationship across the joint at inside and outside of the joint and with end edges of intermediate layers of the collar fold in end to end alinement; the outer layer of the fold having a tearingstrip formed therein that terminates at one end of the collar in an extended tongue that overlaps theopposite end of the strip at the outside of the can, and an anchor tab extending from the edge of the outi0 the collar.
the corresponding edges of the of the fold.
3. A can as recited in claim 2 wherein the underlying layers clinched portion' of said anchor tab is overlapped at the inside of the can Wall by the end portion. of the inner layer of the folded collar that ex-` tends across the joint `of the abutting edges `of WILFQRD n BURNS. n
