Description

April 10, 1945. Y c TATE 2,373,434
REMOVABLE BOTTLE CAP Filed NOV. 15, 1943 Patented Apr. 10, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE REMOVABLE BOTTLE CAP Bertram C. Tate, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application November 15, 1943, Serial No. 510,343 (01. 215-46) 1 Claim.
The invention relates to bottle caps, and more especially quick removable bottle caps.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a cap of this character, wherein the same is so constructed that it can be removed without the use of a special tool or the'usual bottle cap opener, the said cap being detached by the said cap can be easily and quickly removed from the bottle.
A further object of the invention is the provision. of a cap of this character, wherein the clinching of the same to the bottle is had by indentations, these reinforcing the flange of the cap in addiiton to securing the cap in place on the bottle, the flange being cut into to effect releasing tabs or lips for the quick removal of the cap from the bottle, without the use of an instrument for so doing.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a cap of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the preferred form, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is. a top plan view partly in section of the cap constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional View on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Fgure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of the ,cap.
.Figure 7 is a fragmentary detail view.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7 showing one of the indentations opened.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views .in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail A designates generally a portion of the neck of a bottle having at the open mouth end In thereof an external an.
nular bead I I as usual for the fastening of a can generally denoted at B thereto, and constructed in accordance with the invention as hereinafter set forth,
The cap B comprises a circular metal crown I2, although the material may be other than metal having inherent springy character, formed with a corrugated flared skirt I3 providing vertical outstruck ribs I4 and instruck indentations I5} alternating therewith, the latter being for the crimping or clinching of the skirt I3 to the bead I I on the mouth end In of the neck A of a bottle. The ribs I4 are vertically slitted at I6 in the lower portions thereof, and next to an outturned flange II concentric to the skirt and unitary therewith, the flange I! being turned upwardly and inwardly on itself throughout the extent thereof to provide an outwardly inclined overhanging lip I 8 with-relation to the said flange IT.
This lip I8 has notches I9 therein registering with the ribs I4 for the interfitting of the latter therein. The flange I1 and lip I8 are radially slotted at '20, these being diametrically opposed to each other at four points circumferentially of the crown I2 and the inner ends of these slots 20 terminate within the indentations I5 next thereto, so as to provide independent finger releasing'tabs 2I about the said crown I2, to permit the easy and quick release of the cap from the bottle by hand pressure upon a selected tab 2 I.
When an upward pressure is exerted upon a selected tab 2| the cap B becomes loose upon the bottle and such cap by further upward pull by hand thereon is removed from the said bottle.
The lip I8 fulcrums on the ribs I4 when an upwardly directed force is applied to a tab 2|, and thereby releasing the crimping engagement of the cap with the-bottle mouth end I 0. The slits I6 in the ribs I4 open during the upward pressure upon the flange I! for the freeing of the cap from the bottle, these slits I6 being normally closed.
What is claimed is:
A bottle cap comprising a crown portion having a flared skirt providing alternating ribs and indentations when crimped upon a bottle mouth, the ribs having their lower portions vertically slitted, a radially slitted flange extending outwardly from the lower edge of the skirt, and a radially slitted lip overlying the flange and extending inwardly and upwardly from its periphery, the inner edge of the lip having recesses receiving the ribs, and the inner edge of the lip being adapted to contact with the ribs when upper pressure is applied to the flange where-by to provide a fulcrum on which the flange moves to release the skirt from the bottle.
