.Appliance-neemt 26, 1940,-serial No.371,7,52 fzciaiins. (citate-mf This invention relates to an improvementin boxes and more particularly 'relates to a box adapted more especially for'. the `packaging of spectacles. l 1" The lbo'x in accordance with' this invention "wlill be `readily and economically produced and will be eiiicient and Ydurablein 'use and, more particuiarly, fwill be of such structure `'as tolafford maxiprotection to spectacles in shipment.' f Generally speaking, 'the -box inlacco'rdance with this invention will be formed frnia'si'n'g-le blank, though in eontemplation'of this invention it may comprise two essential parts assembled together.
More particularly the box according to this invention will comprise a body portion and integral therewith a cover, which may be plain or apertured. Within the body portion of the box will be a support for a pair of spectacles. The support, which may be integral with the body or a separate element, will be so formed as to enable it to be closely embraced by a pair of spectacles and to serve as a cushioning support therefor. The support will desirably also be so formed as to provide means for securingto its surface a strip of paper or card upon which may be Written, for example, the prescription yof the lenses,
owners name, or other desired infomation.
Having now generally indicated the nature and purpose of this invention, I willproceed to a detailed description of aI preferred embodiment thereof and certain modifications, all with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a plan view of a. blank for theproduction of a box embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a box formed from the blank shown `in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the box shown in Figure 2, w
tion. v
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of a box of modified form over that shown in Figure 3.
th the cover in closed posi- Figures 5 and 6 are plan views of modified forms' of covers over .that shown in Figures 1 and 2. i
Referring now more particularlyto Figures 1-4, the essential parts of the box villustrated comprise a body A, within which is a support B, which may be integral with the body (Figs. 2 and 3) or separate (Fig. 4), as will appear, and the cover C. The box may be formed of any desired material, as heavy paper, cardboard, or the like. i
In the preferred embodiment of this invention the box will be formed by folding from the blank yillustrateciin Figure l, in which I'indicates the bottom of the body, 2, 2 indicate en'diwalls formed by extensions of the bottomof -the body," the lines of juncture 2', 2', with the bottoni," being creased to facilitate folding, and3, `3=findicate front and backwalls, formedfby extensions of fthe i bottom, the lines of juncture 3', 3' with thebottom being creased to 'facilitate folding.' `1 l;
'The ltop of the 'cover extends fromthefrean wall 3'of'the body, the line o'fvjuncture il" being lcreased, and is provided with end flanges '5,'-.\5,
formedb'y extensions ofthe top, the lines ofijuncture 5', 5' with the cover being creased, and with ka front flange 6, formed by an extension of the top, the line of juncture 6 with thel cover being creased. The front flange 6v is provided with a recess Iin its free edge to facilitate raising of the cover to open the box.
The vsupport comprises a base 8, from which extends `a flange 9. The flange is formed by' an extension of the front wall 3 of the body, the
line of juncture 9' being creased. The extension i `forming the ilange 9 is desirably of lesswidth I than the front wall 3. The base 8 is formed by` an extension of the flange 9, thel line of juncture B'being creased. The base is provided about centrally-'with an aperture I0 and with a plurality of recesses I I, I I` extending inwardly from itsends adjacent its `free edge and itsl free edge portion is cut away at its ends (as indicated at I2. The
base willalso be provided with a pair of oppositely Iacingears I3, I3, formed by slitting.
. If desired, as has beenindicated, the support maybeformed as a separateielement.' Thus, `as V shown in Figure 4, the baise 8 and its flange l are formed separately from the body andcover of the box, which are formed integrally` asrde` scribed.
The cover C may be plain, as in theblank Figure 1, or, ifA desired, may be provided with an aperture I 4 (Fig. 5), or a plurality of apertures I5, I5 (Fig. 6),the apertures, Aif desired, being closed'with transparent material, as cellophane. i
The folding of the blank shown in `Figure 1 to form the box will be obvious from an inspec` tion of Figures 2 and 3, and the formationof ythe box with separate support B, as shown inFig. 4, will be equally obvious, it being noted that the walls of the body and the flanges of the cover are secured at the corners by metal strips I8, provided with spuds engaged in the material forming the walls and anges.
In the use of the box for,k for example, packaging spectacles, the support B is lifted clear of y jth'e bday A, then the bows of the spectacles are engaged in a -pair of the recesses II in the base 8 and brought together beneath the support, with the nose piece in the aperture III in the base andl the lenses supported on that the `pairsfof the recesses II are related to the aperture" I0 so that they will, respectively, accommodate spectacle bows variously positioned with respect to their point of connection to thel'af l 101V, formed separate from' lenses Where the support C is the base. It will be notedV 'y 2,370,967 l A tacles vand being provided with yrecesses for the passage o f the bows of a pair'of spectacles extending oppositely into its body from opposite yfree edges. thereof adjacent its edge'opposite to that from which said flange extends.
2.1 A ,box for, packaglngi'spectacles comprising `ra' body', 'a/coverv anda support 'fr' spectacles the body of thetbox, it is removed from thebox -i and replaced after the spectacles Fare -engaged with it as described above,
in replacing the support in the'box the flange 9 will desirably be positioned adjacent to therear wall, as shown in Figure 4. 1
.As may bel desired, the prescription for the lenses may be written on a strip I1 of paper or cardboard and associated 'with the spectacles by securing it to base v8k of vthev support vby en;- :gaging its end portions beneath the ears I3, I3.
