1 Claim.
My invention relates to a new and useful stool or article of furniture and the construction employed for attaching the legs to the seat and the arrangement of connecting the stretchers to the legs for bracing the entire structure.
An object ofthe present invention is to provide a stool that can be made entirely of wood and thereby eliminate the use of. metal which is eX- ceedingly scarce at present.
Another object of this invention is to construct a stool including a seat having dovetail sockets to x individual dovetail socket for each leg in' the underneath face of the stool seat, each of said sockets `comprising a dovetail recess or cavity and an ante-chamber leading to and communicating with its associated recess or cavity Aat one end thereof.
Where nails, screws or dowels are used in. the construction of stools of this character it has been discovered that due to shrinkage, the stresses resulting from usage or other causes, the attaching means soon become loose and the legs or other parts become detached making the whole structure .useless Therefore a still further object of the invention is to provide afstool that is strong and, durable yet simple in construction and easily and quickly assembled in the course vof manufacture. v y
With the above and other objects in View this invention consists of the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter de-v scribedand then designated by the claim.
In order'that those skilled in the art to which this inventionv appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. '7 is an enlarged fragmentary bottom face view of the seat to plainly show the construction of a dovetail socket.-
Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 5 with the leg detached.
In carrying out my invention as herein embodied Irepresents a stool seat having several dovetail sockets Il formed in the bottonil or underneath face thereof., Said sockets are contained wholly inside ofthe rim of the seat and are arranged in radial lines. Each dovetail socket includes a dovetail recess or cavity l2 closed at its outer end and having beveled side walls but opening to the underneath face of the seat and also opening at its inner end toy the.
component or associated ante-chamber I3. This ante-chamber has straight side walls and is as wide as the widest part of the dovetail recess or cavity portion of the socket, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figs. 6- and '7 and plainly shown in Fig. 8. The ante-chamber is open to the underneath face ofthe stool seat the same as the dovetail recess or cavity and it is to be noted that the dovetail socket, as a whole is of less depth than the thickness of the seat, Figs. 5 and 8.
Each leg I4 has a dovetail tenon l5 formed on its upper end at the proper pitch to give the desired spread to the legs such as or similar to Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the stretchers.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional vie-w of one of that illustrated in Fig. 1. The dovetail tenon is of less width than the leg to provide substantial shoulders I5 for a purpose to be presently described. A suitable adhesive, such as glue, is placed in each dovetail socket and the dovetail tenon of a leg is then inserted in the ante-chamber of a dovetail socketand finally the leg is forced outward to cause the tenon to enter the recess or cavity portion of the socket. The shoulders on each side of the tenon rest against the l underneath face of the seat to support the latter and because of the rather long formation of the tenon and its close, snug or forced fit in the socket n such leg cannot rock or wiggle and become loose which might cause it to break.
Diametrically opposite or radially disposed .pairs of legs are tied. or braced by stretchers I1,
one above theother. Each end of each stretcher has a dovetail tenon I8 formed thereon in proper angular position to t the dovetail notches I9 running laterally from one face to the other of the leg. During the assembling operations glue is applied so that the stretchers will be retained in place and because of the shoulders 20 above Vand below the tenons the legs are further held` against wiggling and the dovetail formation of the tenons positively prevents spreading of the legs which is not the case with endwise disposed nails, screws, doWels and the like.
A foot rest 2l has its ends glued in notches 22 in adjacent legs or those disposed in a plane intersecting a chord of the seat.
From the foregoing it Will be apparent that I have provided a stool that can be manufactured expeditiously inv large quantities without the use of separate fastening devices, requiring only Wood and a suitable adhesive, and thereby reducing the cost of material and labor.
Of course I do not Wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described as these may be varied within the scope of the appended claim Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim las new and useful is:
A stool comprising a seat having four radially arranged dovetail sockets each comprising a dovetail recess and a communicating ante-chamber and opening onl5T to the underneath surface of the seat, said ante-chamber being as Wide as the widest part of the dovetail recess and of the same depth, legs having dovetail tenons on their upper ends adapted to enter the dovetail recesses through the ante-chamber and glued in place, stretchers, and dovetail tenons on each end of each stretcher and glued in dovetail notches in diametrically opposite legs with one stretcher overlying the other.
