' 'i c aiiii. 101'. 2-4) The present invention relates to new and useful'improvements in head protectors, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which is adapted to repel all insects, both large and small.

Another Very important object of the invention is toprovide a head protector of the aforementioned character which will permit the smoking of a pipe while in use.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, and to Figures 1, 2 and 3 thereof in particular, it will be seen that reference numeral I designates a substantially circular bobbinet cover. At an intermediate point, the cover I has secured ther in a plurality of spaced rings 2 of suitable flat, resilient material. The upper end of the. cover Asbest seen in Figures 3 and 7 of the drawings, the front portion of the cover I has formed therein an opening I2. Secured on the cover I over the opening I2 is a sheet of flexible rubber I3. The rubber sheet I3 has formed therein crossed slits I 4 providing a pipe receiving opening, said slits defining self-closing flaps I5 for the aforementioned opening. v

It is thought that the manner in which the device functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the

crown 4 of the hat 5 is inserted in the elastic hand 3 for mounting the device on said hat. The arms are then slipped through the loops I0 and the device is pulled on over the head. The elastic band 9 firmly secures the lower end of the protector in position around the upper portion of the body and the arms of the wearer. The elastic band 9 encircles the body, leaving the side portions II of the cover I free for protecting the shoulders and the upper portions of the arms.

A pipe may be conveniently smoked by inserting the stem thereof through the opening provided by the slits I4 and the opening I2. The rings 2 support the cover I "in spaced relation to the face, neck, et cetera, of the wearer. The rings 2 being of flat, resilient material, permit the device to be folded or collapsed in a. manner to occupy a minimum of space when not in use.

In the modification illustrated in Figures 4, 5'

and 6 of the drawings, the top of the cover I is closed by a crown I6 which is adapted to rest on top of a hat or the head of the wearer. The crown I6 includes a fiat, resilient ring I! having mounted thereon a bobbinet cover I8. The peripheral portion of the cover-|8 is turned and stitched in a manner to provide a hem I9 which accommodates the ring II. The stitches 20 which secure the hem 19 also secure the cover I to the crown I6. The lower portion of the cover I is turned and stitched in a manner to provide a hem 2|. The hem 2| accommodates adrawstring or tape 22 of suitable material.

In use, the modified device is pulled on over the head and is supported by the crown Hi. The drawstring or the like 22 permits the lower end of the cover 5 to be gathered or contracted around the neck of the wearer in a manner to prevent the entrance of insects.

It is believed that the many advantages of a head protector constructed inaccordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments of the device are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further modifications and changes in the details of construction may be resorted to Which will fall within the scope of the invention aS claimed.

What is claimed is:

A head protector comprising a tubular net made of uniform normal diameter from end to end and having open upper and lower ends provided with hems, an elastic band in the hem at the upper endof the net for gathering the upper end portion of the net over the brim of the hat and the upper end of the net into snug contact with the outer surface of the crown of the hat, a plurality of vertically spaced flat resilient circular rings secured horizontally in the intermediate portion of the net to distend the latter portion outwardly beyond the brim of the hat and in spaced relation to the head of the wearer, and a second elastic band in the hem at the lower end of the net for drawing the lower end portion of the net into snug contact with the arms, back and chest of the wearer at a point in the region of a horizontal plane below the shoulders and intersecting the arm pits, short portions of said second elastic band being free of the net at opposite sides of the latter to pass between the body and arms wholly within the arm pits of the
