Application November 20, 1943, Serial No. 511,125
3 Claims. (01. 1 60-185) This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in garage doors and more particularly to the overhead opening type.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved garage door, which Figure 6.
by a simple movement can be elevated to an outof-the-Way position.
Another important object of the invention is s Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical section taken I J on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken also substantially on the line-2--2 of Figure 1, but showing the door in partly folded position.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view also taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,but showing the door in fully opened position.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
s Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through one of the slides and channeled guides.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the lower portion ofone of the channeled guides. s s
Figure 8 is a fragmentary detailed sectional view between the door frame and door showing the pivottherefor.
Referring to the drawings wherein like nua merals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 denotes a garage having a door frame made up of side portions 6, 6 and "a top portion divided into a pair of sections hingedly secured l 1. Numeral 8 generally refers to the improved door which consists of an upper section 9 and a lower sectionulfl, these sections being hingedly secured together as at H. i
Suitable handles or the like I2 are provided on the lower outside portion of the section II). and this sectionof the door has laterally disposed pintles l3 which swivelly connect to blocks I4, slidably disposed within the lowerportion of a vertically disposed and channeled guide [5. The lower portion of each of these guides l5 has a laterally disposed member IGapertured to receive a pivot element I! which is disposed into the corresponding frameside portion 6.
The upper section 9 has laterally disposed pintles I8 on which swivelly mounted slides l9 are provided and these slides also operate in. the channeled guide 1-5, as in the manner shown in At the upper edge of somesuitable heavy material 2|. I
The lower portion of this box 20 has a metal socket 22 at each end thereof to receive ;a pintle s 23 projecting from a supporting plate 24 suitably secured as at 25 to the corresponding frame side portion 6. Thus the upper portion of the door section 9 is fixed as far as beingmovable in a vertical direction, however, the upper section is allowed toswing to the extent shown in Figure 4.
Obviously, a slight pressure at the hingedlconnection between the door sections 9, ID will move the sections to substantially the position shown inFigure 3, after which a pull upwardly on the handles I2 will bringthe door sections to the ele-.
vated positions shown in Figure 4 in a quick and substantially effortless operation. I While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resortedto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A garage door comprising a door proper invention, what is together, a pair of channeled guides one at each side of the door, pintles projecting laterally from the door sections andslides on the pintles riding in the channeled guides, and counterbalancing means at the upper portion of the upper sec in the channeled guides, and counterbalancing means at the upper portion of the upper section,
said channeled guides being swingably supported at theirlower end portions.
3. A garage door comprising a (1001 proper di-j vided into a pair of sections hingedly secured together, a pair of channeled guides one at each side of the door, pintles projecting laterally from the. door sections and slides on the pintles riding in the channeled guides, and. counterbalancing means at the upper portion of the upper sec-. l, j
tion, and means for swingably supporting the upper portion of the upper section along with its the door section 9 is as counterweight, which may be a box Zllfilled with
