(No Model.)
F. H. BROWN. Oscillating Cradle.
No. 236,545.. Patented Jan. H, 188i.
Wa'hwaaa;
Dis PHOTO-LITMOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICEU FRED. H. BROWN, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO MAX ELSER AND JOHN PERRY ALEXANDER, OF SAME PLACE.
O SCILLATING CRADLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 236,545, dated January 11, 1881.
Application filed August 18, 1880, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED. H. BROWN, of Fort NVorth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oscillating Cradles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the in- "ention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which I have represented my improved crib in side elevation.
My invention has relation to oscillating cribs or cradles operated by clock-work or similar mechanism; and it consists in the detailed construct-ion and combination of parts as hereiuafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
A represents the frame of the crib, which may be of light wood-work, wicker-work, or similar suitable material, and should be provided with one or more wire arches, B, for supporting a mosquito-canopy, when desired. On opposite sides of the frame A are two cross-bars, C, (only one of which is shown in the drawing,) ,in which the pendulum-bars D D (two on each side) are pivoted at d d. Attached to the lower end of these bars are adjustable weights E E, which may be fixed in their position upon their respective bars by means of set-screws e e. The upper end of each of the pendulum-bars D D are pivoted in the upper side rails of the crib I at b b.
F is a pitman, which extends from one of the bars D to the crank G of a clock-work mechanism, H, of suitable eonstruction, which may be operated by weights or springs, as preferred. By the rotation of crank G the pitman F is reciprocated, thus vibrating that one of the pendulum-bars to which it is attached, and with it the crib, which is supported upon and between the four bars, above their point of connection with the cross-bars C.
By adjusting the weights or pendulums E upon their respective bars the weight of the crib and child may be balanced so as to work easily and smoothly within the frame.
Attached to the bottom of the crib is a slender rod, 1, which has a round wooden head, i, at its lower end, that plays upon a xylophone or metallophone, K, placed in the frame underneath the crib, during its vibrations to and fro. W
This crib is simple and compact in its construction, works easily and without noise, except that of the Xylophone, which is of a pleasing character, calculated to soothe the child and encourage sleep.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States- The improved mechanical crib herein described, composed of the frame or support A, having cross-bars O, pivoted pendulum-bars D, having adjustable weights E, crib I, supported upon and suspended between said bars above their point of connection with the crossbar 0, and provided with the flexible rod 1, pitman F, clock mechanism H, having crank G, and the musical instrument K, all constructed and combined to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED. HARVEY BROWN.
Witnesses S. SEATON, LEVI W. NORCROSS.
