Description

Dec. 5, 1944.- T, HOWARD FOLDING HANDLE FOR CONTAINERS Filed 061.. 3, 1941 INVENTOR. eJ T J-loward st l Patented Dec. 5, 1944 umw A W FOLDING HANDLE FOR CONTAINERS Styles T. Howard, J efiersonville, Ind.
Application October 3, 1941, Serial No. 413,454
2 Claims. 1 (Cl. 22094) (Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30,1928; 370 0. G. 757) a The invention described herein, if patented, may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmentalipurposes without the payment of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to and hasfor a. purpose the provision of a folding handle, particularly adapted for use on nesting containers and the like.
The important object of this invention, therefore, is to provide a handle that will facilitate carrying the containersfrom place to place and intermediate'portions which are adapted to be received in eyes defined by raised portions l8 of stop members or plates I9 which are secured to the container by any well-known means such as 1 rivets I5. The eyes or raised portions l8 of the plates l 9 form stops that limit the upward movealso facilitate the placing of the container'within and removing it from another container or the i like. i p With, the above, and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of features of construction, arrangement and operation of parts which will appear in the specification and be finally pointed out in theclaims.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown, it will be understood that slight changes in form and minor details of constructionmay be resorted to without departing from Fig. 31s a side elevation of the handle in carrying position, showing the mannerin which one container can be supported on the edge of another. i
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the handle in lowered position.
, Reference now being had to the drawing by numerals, ii! designates the main receptacle or container, which may be cylindrical or of any ment of the handles, l3.
For purposes of illustration only, there is shown resting on the bottom of the container l2 a rectangular supporting member 20 which is adapted to receive and support containers 2| which are provided with the usual lids 22. The
containers 2| are also provided with folding handles l3, plates I4 and bails l1; Stop members or, plates 23 are secured to the containers 2|, but the plates 23 diifer from the plates I9, in that the eye-forming raised portions 24 thereof are open at the bottom to permit the links I! to be moved from engagement with the stop members 23, so that the handle l3 can be raised and assume the positions shown in Fig. 1. The
handles I3 in this position facilitate the removal of the containers 2| from the container I12. The plates 23 are preferablysecured to ,thecontainers 21 by rivets I5.
It is obvious that when the receptacles or containers are nested as shown in Fig. 1 that it would be difficult procedure to nest the containers or remove the containers from the nested positions unlessfolding handles, such as the invention contemplates, are-used. Containers 2| can also be placed in the position as shown in Fig. 3, and whilein this position they will facilitate the removal tainer.
While there have been shown and described certain embodiments of the invention, :itis to be understood that it is capable of many modidesired shape and equipped with the usual han' dles II on the exterior thereof. The container in is adapted to have nested therein another container I 2. The container I2 is provided with 001- lapsible or folding handles l3 which are adapted to lie against the container l2 when they are in lowered position. The handles I3 are pivotally supported by retaining members or plates M which are secured to the container 12 by any Well-known means, such as rivets H3 or the like.
The handles l3 are provided with openings l6 which are adapted to receive bails or links H. The bails H are provided with angularly disposed fications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention, as disclosed in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, wh-at'is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. In combination, a container, a handle pivotallysecured to the container, a member secured to the container in spaced relation to the handle and having an elongated eye which is disposed lengthwise in directions toward and away from the handle, a link pivotally secured to the handle and having an angularly-disposed portion extending transversely through the eye andbodily slidable lengthwise of the eye towards and away from the handle and adapted to enrew of the contents of the conto the handle and having an angularly-disposed 10 portion extending transversely through the eye and bodily slidable lengthwise of the eye towards and away from the handle and adapted to engage the inner terminal of the eye to limit the pivotal movement of the handle to a position in which it extends laterally from the container, the link being movable from engagement with the eye to permit. the handle to. move upwardly about its pivot to, substantially vertical position.
