A screw I9 thread ed infthe base I6 holds the miter head andcollar assembled with the base and locks the miter head in any desired position of adjustment, such adjustment being facilitated by a scale 20 on the base and a gauge mark (not shown) on thefront' of the miter head.
- formin The miter head has an arm 2| extending radially therefrom to which a miter bar support 22 is secured. This miter bar support has a miter bar or other work engaging member 23 secured thereto and which when in use for mitering has a work stop 24 fixed thereto to support the end of the work as will be readily apparent.
In order to support the miter head base and the assembly carried thereb for free movement across the face of the work table, a slide pin or,
foot 25 is secured in the under face of a boss 26 When the attachment is to be used for ripping,.
the miter head is adjusted to its position at which the miter bar 23 forms a ripping fence parallel with the rods l3 as clearly shown in Figon the bottom of the base [6 between the bosses necting the rods at one end; a work engaging face on said miter head; a feed screw journalled in themeans connecting the rods and held against endwise movement with respect thereto; a hand wheel on the feed screw; and a nut carried by lithe bracket for engaging the feed screw so that ure 3. When used for this purpose the work stop 24 is of course removed to enable the work to be fed through.
For mitering and cut ofis a work feed is .pro-
vided. This may be accomplished manually-by means of hand wheel 21 or through use of the power feed with which'the machine is equipped. The power feed forms no part of the presentinvention, but for purposes of illustration includes a chain 28 or other tension member adapted to wrap around the work or the work guide and to.
exert a pull thereon. In the present case when the power feed is used the chain is engaged over the collar l8.
The hand wheel 21 .is fixed to a feed screw 29' having its ends journalled in bearings carried by the cross bar l4 and the miter head base IS. A.
The nut 30, as best shown in Figure 6, comprises two half sections 3| extending up from bosses 32. The bosses 32 have flanges 33 extending in opposite directions therefrom to be slidably received in guideways 34 in the underside of two depending portions of the bracket as best shown in Figure 5. A shaft 35 extends through the bosses 32 and has stop collars 36 and 3l'fixed to its opposite ends the former being provided with a handle 38.
The meeting faces of the stop collars 36-31 and the adjacent ends of the bosses are formed with interengageable V projections and notches camsso that by rotation of the collars the bos es and half nut sections can be moved toward each other.
A compression spring 39 seated in counterbores in the bosses 32 yieldingly urges the same apart to maintain them in engagement with the stopcollars 36 and 31.
Through the provision of this split nut ar-' rangement the nut may be quickly engaged and nection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that this invention provides a practical and exceptionally handy attachment for metal cutting band saws and that the same may beused with rotation of the feed screw slides the rods and the "work engaging face in a direction parallel with the axes of the rods.
2. A work feeding and guiding attachment for band saws and the like comprising: a bracket attachable to the work supporting table of'the band saw; a pair of guideways rigidlymounted on the bracket; rods slidably received in said guideways; means rigidly connecting-said rods at both ends; amiterhead mounted onthe means connecting the rods at one end; a work engaging face on said miter head; a feedscrew journalled in the means connecting the rods'and held against endwise' movement with respect thereto; a handwheel on the feed screw; a nut carried by the bracket for engaging the feed screw so that rotation of the feed screw slides the rods and-the work engaging face in adirectio-n parallel with the axes of the rods, said nut being split;'and means for. quickly moving the nut sections toward and from each other to quickly free the nut from or engage-it with the feed screw.
3. An attachment of the character described comprising: a pair of parallel rods; a cross mem-,
' carried by the miter head; a bracket in which the rods are slidably received; means'for detachably securing the bracket to the work supporting table of a machine tool with the miter head base and its associated assembly slidable across the table; and means on themiter head assembly for attaching the power feed of the machine tool thereto.
4..An attachment of the chara c ter described comprising:' a pair of parallel rods; a cross member rigidly connecting the rods at one end a mi ter head base rigidly connecting the rods at the.
