oF MAKING `Harry Bows, Angeles, and Attilio Iannessa, Inglewood, Calif., assignors to MS. Karpen & I Bros., Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Illinois I `rnnlieation ingest 14, 1942, serial No. 454,798 Y t t tclaims. (c1. -360) c `This ,inventionrrelates to a `mattress. and a method of making` the same, andrmore particu- `larlyto an improvement in `mattress structures ofthe type containing an edge roll disposed beneath the ticking or finish-fabric of themattress.
`used in connection with `this sheet is intended to` refer totheedge ofthe she-et `Without regard to thershape orform of the sheet. Similarly, by referring to circumferential portions` of thesheet I A n object of `the invention` is to provide in- 4creasedsturdiness ina mattress structure fembodying an inner edge roll disposed beneath the ticking. structure with improved shape-retaining qualities and with inner edge rolls. The improved con- Another` object is to provide a durable I structionI is particularly-suitable for mattresses `having `a solid iilling material as distinguished from the inner spring construction.
, I @Another object of I the invention is to provide `a `mattress construction having an inner edge roll and using amelatively small quantity of fabri I in the construction thereof.
Other features and advantages, willappear from the following` specicationtand KIdrawing, in
which* `Figi is aperspective view of a sheet of ticking or` finish-fabric showing strips of fabric attached `tothe `inner side thereof; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectionalview of` a mattress showingthe rst step I in the construction @Fig `3 is a similar fragmentary sectional View showing the construction after the edge rolls are formed; and Fig. 4 isa fragmentary` sectionalview showing the construction I `of the completed mattress. I I t ,",The invention.contemplates; the construction of a mattress wherein a `portion of the ticking" whether rectangular or circular` in shapaare` intendedto'be included. E
The strips Il, l2, I3` and` I4 are of a width slightly I greater than the edge portions of `the I "sheet, I I)which 4overlietlie strip so that the strips` .extend slightly `beyond the peripheral edge of the sheet II). Ifdesired, the strips may be hemmed along their outer edges. The strips II, I2, I3 and It` may be .secured to each other by sewing the same in order to form a circumferential `iiap `,dependingfrom the underside of the sheeti andyextending completely about thesame., I In'lig l, thestripsll and IIZare shownin t separated relation as before attaching, but are y attached to `the sheet ID along thelline 28 and `may thenbeattached toeach other at their ends.
`informing the mattress, the sheet-I0 may be `usedlas the top tickingfor iinishfabric sheet, and n a similar sheetfZI may befused as ,the` bottom ticking sheet. '1A border band 22 may be attached `at its upper and lower edges to the sheets I0 'and t 2 I` respectivelyby stitching 23 and 24.
or a sheet or stripsejoured to the neiging` is used I I in forming an inneredge roll. The edge rollis thusl secured directly to the ticking or outer finish-` `fabric of the mattress, and at the` Sametime the t `quantity of fabric used in the `mattress is maint tained at a minimum. t In the embodiment o of any suitable or conventional fabric, sproof muslin vor other suitable fabric, which are se- The border band may consistof a fabric sheet to which padding oiwiilling material 28may be attached by stitches 2l toform aprebuilt border.
Anysuitable typeof border band, however, may be used. The` border band may extend completely about the mattress structure and may be secured atfi'ts upper and lower edges to the sheets I0 and" 2| `to form aboxing or casingf28, `illustrated in f the Y invention `destzribed t herein, the top sheet of ticking IIJ, which may be 540 cured to thelovver` side of the sheet I0 adjacent` to `but spaced from the peripheral `edge of the sheet. Preferably, as shown, the strips II, I2, I3
and I4 are sewed to the underside of the sheet I0 along thelines I5, I6, I'I and I8 which are in the circumferential portion of the sheet I0 adjacent I the peripheral edge thereof.
The sheet I0 is preferably rectangular in shape, l
as in conventional mattress construction, and may j be equipped with a hem I9 along the peripheral` edge thereof. The sheet III, of course, may be of ,Informingthe boxing or casing` 28, the border is left .unattached to the sheets I0 and 21| ai; one side thereof in order to `permit the introduction ofl filling` material into the boxing or casing.`
The mung materia of any suitable type or 'character may be introduced into the boxing or casing 28.? If`a solid illintgtmaterial is used, a
any desired shape, andthe term peripher as 4ISIS When the llin'g material has been introduced Vinto the casing, the casing is closed by completing construction to form edge rolls 35 and 36. At the same time, an outer border strip 3'I/may be applied to the border of the casing. 'I'he edge rolls, of course, may be formed in any suitable or desired manner. i
After the edge rolls have been formed in the casing or boxing 28, additional filling material 38 may be placed about the portions of the strips I4 and 33 which are drawn inwardly in the formation of the edge rolls. The ticking sheets I and 2| may then be secured to the outer border strip 31 at the edges thereof, the attachment preferably being made by sewing strips of tape 39 to the ticking and the border strip at the junctio thereof.
In the mattress construction which is thus formed, the edge rolls are disposed within the ticking, and Va smooth outer surface is obtained. The attachment ofthe strips I4 and 33 to the ticking sheets Ill and 2l serves to secure the edge rolls in position with respect to the ticking sheets andprovides a sturdy durable construction. At the same time, the use of a separate liner sheet in forming the inner casing with the inner edge rolls is avoided and the quantity of fabric material used in forming the mattresses thus minimized.
Although the invention has been described in connection with a particular embodiment, it will be apparent that many modifications and changes may bemade without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
We claim: l
