UNrren Samaras ArtNr EVERETT POMEROY, OF SAN JOS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO S. C,
' HOUGHTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,356, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed November 5, 1880.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, EVERETT PoMERoY, of the city of San Jos, county of Santa Clara, in the State of California, have invented an Improved Trunk-Strap; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved stra-p that can be readily applied to a trunk, box, or parcel, for the purpose ot' binding or banding it, and thus prevent it from bursting or coming to pieces, and also as a safeguard to prevent itfrom being opened by unauthorized persons.
Referring to the accompanying' drawings, Figure l shows my invention applied to a trunk, and Fig. 2 the construction of the strap.
Arepresents a metallic ringor link, to which I secure four straps, B C D E, so that they will radiate in four direct-ions therefrom. Two of these straps, B C, I make long` enough to pass around the trunk, box, or parcel at right angles to each other, while the other two, D E, are short, so as to extend across the top of thel trunk, box, or parcel and hang a short distance down its side or end. To the end of each short strap D E, I secure a ring or buckle, j', in which the ends ofthe long straps are fastened after they have been passed around the trunk, box, or parcel.
To apply the strap I place the ring, loop, or link A upon the top ofthe trunk near its center, as shown at Fig. 2. I then arrange the (No model.)
long straps so that one will pass around the trunk, box, or parcel in each direction at right angles to each other. I then arrange the short straps in opposite directions to the long straps, so that when the long straps have been passed around the trunk, box, or parcel their ends can be fastened in the buckles or rings at the ends of the short straps, thus securely binding or banding the trunk, box, or parcel.
The straps can be fastened to the ringA by sewing, by means of rivets, or by other convenient means, and it is immaterial which of the straps are long and which are short, so long` as there are two long and two short ones.
By this arrangement ot' the strap it can be quickly applied and fastened around a trunk, box, or parcel, and it can be drawn as tight as desired, and fastened so as to resist any strain to which it may be subjected by ordinary handling.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A strap for trunks, boxes, or parcels, cour posed of two short straps, D E, and two long` straps, B C, attached at one end to a metallic ring or link, A, the short straps being provided with rings or buckles j' at their ends, all arranged substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
EVERETT POMEROY.
