., ThiLl Coupling.
No. 236,014. Patented Dec. 28, 1880.

STATES ATENT Erica.
GEORGE W. FRIED, OF ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JOHN J. STERNER, ()F SAME'PLAOE.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,014, dated December 28, 1880.
Application filed November 11, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FRIED, of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings;
' and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the 0 same, referencebeinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of a thillcoupling embodying my improvements. Fig.
2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 isa transverse vertical sectional view, of the same.
This invention has relation to thill-couplings; and it consists in the improved features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the axle-clip by which '25 the slotted box B is secured to the axle.
The box B has slots 0 in its vertical side walls, D, for the reception of the bolt E, which passes through the eye F of the thilliron G. The eye of the thill-iron is of a length to snugly fit the space between the vertical walls D of the box. The box B is open at the top and front, but is closed at the bottom by a wall, H. A swinging rectangular-shaped loop, I, is secured to the bolt E by having 5 said bolt E passed through eyes J in the parallel arms K of said loop, and secured thereon by a nut, K. The cross-bar L of the loop I is provided at its middle with a set-screw, M, the point of which passes through said cross- 40 bar L and rests in a step, N, in the outer face of the bottom wall, H, of the box when the thill is locked in place. Arubber block, 0, is interposed between the eye of the thill-iron and the rear wall, P, of the box, and this, together with the set-screw M, when driven home, 5 prevents all rattling and noise.
To couple the thills to the boxes the setscrew M should be turned up until the point is drawn within the hole in the cross-bar L. The arms of the loop are a sufficient distance apart to permit the box B to pass in between them. The thill-eye F is passed between the walls D, the arms of the loop outside of them, the crossbar of the loop being first swung up against the thill-iron, and the bolt dropped into the slots 0. The loop is then swung down underneath the box B and the set-screw driven home in the step N. The thills are then looked in place.
This device is cheap, simple, and secure, and the rapidity and ease with which it can be coupledand uncoupled commend it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a thill-coupling, the box B, having side walls, D, provided with slots 0, and the bot= tom wall,-H, having step N, in combination with the thill-iron Gr, having eye F, the swinging loop I, having cross-bar L and set-screw M, and the bolt E and nut K, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
hi GEORGE W. X FRIED.
mark. Witnesses:
