Description

June 13, 1944. LEVY 2,351,438
RAZOR BLABEl SHARPENER I Filed June so, 194:5l
INVENTOR.
Patented June 13, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Ludwig Levy, New York, N. Y.
Application June 3i), 1943, Serial No. 492,823
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in razor blade Sharpeners, and the objects of my improvement are as follows:
First, to provide a razor blade Sharpener which is primarily nat and light in weight so that it can be carried conveniently in a travelling bag or in a toilet kit of a soldier requiring only a minimum of space;
Second, to provide a device of the character de.. scribed which can be made primarily of wood, card board, plastic material, and which has practically no metal parts so that it can neither contract rust nor become oxidized.
Third, to provide a device of the character described which acts lengthwise at the cutting edges of the razor blade, and the sharpening means oi which engage only the cutting edges without exerting friction on the body of the blade; and
Fourth, to provide a device of the character described which allows a thorough sharpening of I both sides of the edges of a double edged blade without changing the position of the blade re1- ative to the device.
Further objects of the instant invention reside in any novel feature of construction or operation or novel combination of parts present in the embodiment of the invention described and shown in the accompanying drawing whether within cr without the scope of the appended claim and irrespective of other specific statements as to the scope of the invention contained herein.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the entire device;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer throughout the several views.
The base portion of my improved razor blade Sharpener consists of a flat piece of materialpreferably wood, cardboard, or plastic materialwhich is formed at its lower part as a broad handle l, from which extends a narrow center piece 2, and which is formed at its upper part as a cross piece 3. Rods 4 of wood, plastic material, or of any other solid substance, are secured to the outer parts of the cross piece 3 and the handle piece I by means of nails 5, or by gluing, or in any other suitable manner. which are parallel to the center piece 2 and which are equally spaced apart thereof, give the necessary sturdiness to the device so that the center piece 2 can be thin and narrow. Pins 6 are seto similar parts The rods 4,
cured to the center piece 2 in such a manner 55 that they register with the usual apertures in any standard razor blade 1. A resilient tongue preferably of Celluloid or the like, having a broad upper portion 8, a center portion 9 which is of the same width as the center piece 2, and a broad lower portion I0, is secured to the cross piece 3 and has apertures I I in its center portion which register with the pins 6. 'I'hus a razor blade 1 can be handily secured to the center piece 2 by lifting the tongue as indicated in Fig. 2 in dash-and-dotted lines, engaging the apertures in the blade by the pins 6, and pressing the tongue part I0 down upon the handle I. Thus the blade can be held safely by means of the thumb which, when pressing down the part I0, is in a safe distance from the cutting edges and out of the 'way of the moving parts.
The rods 4 are adapted to guide the means for sharpening the edges of the blade 1. Said means, when being reciprocated on the rods 4, are pressed lightly against the cutting edges of the blade l. I prefer to carry out the sharpening means in the manner shown in the drawing where it will be seen that a sleeve member I2 is loosely attached to each rod 4 and that two ears I4, carrying pieces I5 of leather or ther like, radiate from each sleeve member I2. The ears I4 are approximately rectangularly disposed to each other and are so broad that they protect the fingers of the hand from touching the blade 1 when reciprocating the sleeve member I2.
While there has been shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to a single modification, it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is the intention, therefore, to be limited only as indicated by the scope of the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, `what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
A razor blade Sharpener comprising a center piece, rods equally spaced apart from and parallel to said center piece, a cross piece connecting the upper end of said rods to said center piece, a broad flat handle connecting the lower part of said rods to said centerpiece, pins secured to said centerpiece and adapted to hold a razor blade in such a manner that the cutting edges of the blade are parallel to said rods, a sleeve member loosely attached to each of said rods, two ears rectangularly disposed to each other radiating from each of said sleeve members and carrying at their inner sides means for sharpening the cutting edges of the razor blade, and a resilient tongue secured to said cross piece and extending over said entire center piece to the upper part of said handle; the width of said centerpiece and of the middle part of said tongue being less than the width of the razor blade, said tongue having apertures into which said pins extend, and said handle being formed as a iiat light Weight unit with said center piece and with said cross pieces, all substantially as described.
