5 Claims. (Cl. 229-37) This invention relates a carton.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction of sealed carton designed to provide a tight seal for the top, bottom, or both ends of the carton. The novel sealedclosure is particularly useful in those cartons constructed of relatively light board.
With this general object in view and such others as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the sealed carton and in the various structures, arrangements and combinations of.
parts hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawing which illustrates the preferred embodiments of the invention, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carton forming the subject matter of the present invention in its fully opened position; Fig. 2 is a perspective detail showing the first step in closing the flaps of the carton to produce the present sealed carton; Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the end flaps folded down to expose portions of the underlying flap and having adhesive applied to the undersurface of the remaining flap; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the last flap folded over, the shaded portions representing those portions of the lowermost flap which become adhesively afilxed to the top flap.
In general, the present carton comprises a body portion of rectangular shape having a flap formed as an extension of each panel thereof and the flaps are designed to be folded down to form a closure for the end of the carton. In order to provide a most eflicient and tight seal between the flaps, provision ismade forfolding down three of the flaps and for adhes'ively afiixing the undersurface of the last folded flap to thepreviously folded flaps. folded down are shaped to expose a substantial portion of each flap, whereby, when the outer or last folded flap is folded down, a satisfactory and tight seal may be affected by adhesively affixing the under-surface of the fourth or last flap to the The three flaps which are first trated in Fig.3, onto the previously folded wider flap C, they expose a triangular portion H of the underlying flap C, and when the last flap D is folded down, the adhesive coating, may be affixed directly to the two intermediate flaps A and B.
Y and to the exposed triangular portion ll of the underlying flap C, thus providing in effect a continuous seal across the entire end of the carton and securely uniting the flap D to each of the previously folded down flaps A, B and C. The flaps [A and B may and preferably will be of a width such as to expose a narrow strip i6 which further assists in securing the outer flap D to the first folded flap C across the entire width thereof.
The present structure of carton is particularly useful in order to enable satisfactory tight seals to be made when the body and flap forming portions of the carton are composed of relatively light and more or less flexible board.
From the above description it will be observed that in the present construction of carton, as illustrated in Figs.- 1 to 4, the flaps A and B present a substantially flush surface against which 347,138 filed July 24, 1940.
While the preferred embodiments of the invention have been herein illustrated and described, it will be understood that the inventionmay be embodied in other forms within the scope of the exposed portions of the three flaps which have been previously folded down.
Referring now to, the drawing, in Figs. .1
through 4, I have illustrated one embodiment of the invention in which IO' represents the .body portion of the carton provided with the flaps A, B,
C and D, formed as extensions of corresponding.
panels of the carton body. In order to form the desired eflicient andtightlysealed end closure following claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. 'A carton formed from a relatively thin and flexible board stock comprising a body portion of general rectangular shape provided with a flap joined thereto along a fold line and formed as an extension of each panel thereof whereby two narrow'and two relatively wide flaps are arranged opposite each other, threev of said flaps being folded. down and shaped to expose substantial portions of each when in their folded relation, the first folded-flap being one of the wider flapsof the carton and the other two the narrow flaps, the last folded flap being the other wide flap and being adhesively aflixed to the exposed portions of each of the remaining flaps, the first folded flap having its exposed area adjacent its fold line.
whereby to provide a relatively firm support against which the last folded flap is pressed, the relative thinness and flexibility of the board stock permitting a substantially tight seal against the underlying flaps.
2. A tubular carton of fibrous sheet material having four side walls, a flap of the size and shape of the carton end and extending inwardly from one side wall along a fold line, a pair of trapezoidal shaped flaps extending. inwardly from opposed side walls to approximately the center of the first mentioned flap on which they are rested with their end edges in substantially abutting relation and exposing a substantia1 portion of the upper face of the first-mentioned fiap substantially throughout the length of the fold line, and a fourth flap of the size and shape of the carton end and extending inwardly from the side wall opposed to the first-mentioned side wall and intimately united by adhesive to each of the exposed upper faces of the other three mentioned fiaps by a continuous zone of adhesive over the juncture of all said flaps with the side walls for forming a functionally integral air-tight end wall structure.
3. A carton formed from thin, flexible board stock, comprising: a body portion of generally rectangularshape provided with a flap formed as an extension of each panel thereof and connected to the panel along a fold line, whereby a pair of narrow flaps and a pair of relatively wide flaps are arranged opposite each other, the flaps of one of said pairs of flaps being of substantially the same size and shape as the carton end, the flaps of the other pair being substantially trapezoidal shaped and overlying one of the substantially rectangular flaps of said first-mentioned pair of rectangular shape provided with a flap formed as an extension of each panel thereof and con-' nected to the panel alonga fold line, wherebya pair of narrow flaps and apair of relatively wide flaps are. arranged opposite each other, the flaps of one of said pairs of flaps being of substantially the same size and shape as the carton end, the flaps of the other pair being substantially trapezoidal shaped and overlying one of the substantially rectangular flaps or said first-mentioned pair of flaps, said trapezoidal flaps extending inwardly from their respective fold lines to a point slightly less than half way across the carton end, whereby to leave a narrow strip of the underlying substantially rectangular flap exposed between the adjacent edges of said trapezoidal shaped fiaps and also exposing a substantial area of the outer side of the underlying substantially rectangular flap in a zone adjacent to and extending substantially along the full, length of its fold line, Y
the second substantially rectangular flap being folded over upon'said two trapezoidal shaped flaps and said first-mentioned substantially rec-' tangular flap and adhesively secured to the exposed outer surfaces of said three flaps including the exposed surface between the adjacent edges flaps, said trapezoidal flaps extending inwardly from their respective fold lines to a point approximately half way across the carton end and exposing a substantial area .ofthe outer side of the underlying substantially rectangular flap in a zone adjacent to and extending substantially along the full length of its fold line, the second substantially rectangular flap being folded over.
upon said two trapezoidal shaped flaps and said first-mentioned substantially rectangular flap and adhesively secured to the exposed outer surfaces of said three'fiaps to provide a sealed end wall structure, the flexibility and thinnessof the board stock assuring a tight seal against the exposed areas of the three underlying flaps;
4. A carton formed from thin, fljexible board of said trapezoidal flaps to provide a sealed end wall structure, the flexibility and thinness of the board stock assuring a tight seal against the exposed areasof the three underlying flaps.
5. A carton formed from a relatively thin and flexible board stock comprising a body portion of general rectangular shape provided with four flaps each being formed as an extension of one panel of said body portion, two opposed flaps being rectangular in shape and of a.size corresponding to the carton end, one of said rectangular flaps being first folded down and the two intermediate flaps being folded into a position to overlie said first folded rectangular. shape, the shape of said intermediate flaps being such as to expose a triangular portion of the first folded rectangularv flap along the fold line thereof, the
remaining substantial rectangular fiap being toldedand adhesively afllxed to the two intermediate flaps and to the exposed triangular portion of the first folded rectangular flap, the relative thinness 'of each of the underlying flaps.
