1 Claim. (Cl. 7-8.1)
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools and more particularly to an attachment for hatchets and like tools, the invention more specifically consisting of a plane attachment for shingling hatchets.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a plane attachment for hatchets and like implements whereby carpenters and other workmen will have the combination of a hatchet and plane in hand which will be extremely con venient in applying shingles, clapboards and in various other works of carpentry.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a plane attachment which can be readily applied to hatchets and various other carpentry tools.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary side elevational view showing the plane attached to a hatchets handle.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view on the line 44 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the plane without. the blade and retaining means.
.Figure '7 is a perspective view of the blade.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen in Figure 1, that numeral 5 denotes a conventional hatchet head such as is used by carpenters, while numeral 6 denotes a handle therefor.
The present invention is generally referred to by numeral I and is in the form of a plane attachment adapted to be secured to the handle 6.
This type of plane is known as a channel plane and consists of a channeled rider 8, the channeled side of which is down and the forward ends of the side walls of this channeled member 8 are preferably flared as at 9,
The top of the channeled member 8 is formed with a transverse slot I0 and adjacent to this a lip II rises inclinedly and serves as a support for a planing blade I2 having the usual beveled cutting edge I3. The blade I2 has a threaded opening I4 therein.
Numeral I5 denotes a U-shaped strap having its leg portions secured to side portions of the lip I I and into this is disposed a plate I6 through which a securing screw I7 is disposed, this screw being threadedly disposed into the opening I4 of the blade IE. Obviously, by loosening and tightening the screw H the blade can be loosened, shifted and secured in place again as seen fit.
A plate I3 rises from one side of the channeled member 8 and has a curved upper portion I9 formed with openings 20 through which securing elements 2| are disposed for securing this portion I9 to the handle 6 adjacent the hatchet head 5. The channeled member 8 and the blade I4 will assume the position with respect to the head 5, as shown in Figure 1.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A plane for attachment to the front end of a tool handle comprising an elongated channeled work straddling body provided with a laterally flaring front end to prevent the plane from binding against the work, a fiat top having a transverse blade accommodating slot therein substantially midway of the ends of the body, a blade backing lip integral With and inclining upwardly and rearwardly from said top in the rear of the slot, and means to attach the body to said handle to depend therefrom comprising a right angled plate having one leg secured to said flat top in the rear of said lip, and the other leg rising from one side of the body for attachment to said handle and curved edgewise to incline the body of the plane relative to the handle when attached.
invention, what is JOSEPH A. E. ROMANOSKI.
