Description

(No Model.)
. G. HEGKEL.
Sled Propeller.
No. 234,774. Patented Nov. 23,1880.
PETERS. PHOTO- NQGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HEOKEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SLED-PROPELLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,774, dated November 23, 1880.
Application filed September 15, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE HECKEL, of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleighs, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a suitable lever or levers, to
which one end of a pointed rod is hinged, said lever being attached to a frame or bar turning on a bolt fast in the forward end of the sleigh. The pointed end of said rod resting upon the ice or snow will, by the forward motion of said lever or levers, easily slide over the ice or snow, and at the backward motion of said lever or levers the loose and pointed end of the rod will penetrate the ice or snow, so that the further motion of said lever or levers will cause the sleigh to move forward. The moving of the frame or baawill enable the operator to regulate the direction of the motion of the sleigh.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a longitudinal section of a sleigh with my improvement attached. Fig. II is a top view of the same.
A A represent the runners, and B the seat, of a sleigh constructed and arranged in the usual manner.
To the foot-board O, which connects at the same time the forward ends of the runners together, a frame or bar, D, is attached by means of a bolt, 0., around which said frame can turn.
H is a lever, the lower end of which is attached to the forward end of the frame D at b, and is provided at its upper end with suitable handles a. Between the joint I) and the handles a a rod, R, is hinged to this lever H, the other end of which, 00, is either pointed or the same may be flattened and made with a sharp edge, and is allowed to rest upon the ground.
The boy or operator sitting upon the seat B rests his feet upon the frame D, and is thereby able to turn the same in either direction around itsjoint-pin a, moving thereby the end :0 of the rod R to the one or to the other side of the center, and thus change slightly the direction of the sleigh.
By the forward movement of the lever H the end of the rod R will easily be moved over the ice or snow, while by the backward move ment of said lever H the end .10 of the rod R will penetrate the ice or snow, and the further movement of said lever H will cause the sleigh to move forward.
The frame D, which is only for the purpose of facilitating the changing or regulating of the motion of the sleigh, may be dispensed with and the lever H hinged directly to the foot-board O or to the frame of the sleigh.
In this case the joint I) must be made free, so as to allow a slight twisting of said lever to bring the extreme end of the rod R toward the one or the other side, as may be desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a sleigh, a frame or bar, D, turning on a bolt, a, attached to the forward part of the sleigh, and proy'ided with a lever, H, and rod R, arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
