Description
April 11, 1944. A. c. WILCOX 2,346,465
VIBRATOR Filed April 10, 1942 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 AmrwM/m Patented Apr. 11, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The invention relates to vibrators, and more particularly to a vibrator having a reciprocating massage cushion operated by an electro-magnet.
It is an object of the invention to provide an electric vibrator having a vertically disposed electro-magnet, the reciprocating core or armature of which supports a massage cushion for rapidly vibrating the same. Another object is to provide a vibrator of the character referred to in which spring means is associated with the armature acting against the pull of the magnet.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a Vibrator of this character in which the armature is swivelled within the magnet.
A still further object is the provision of such a vibrator which is adaptedfor the well known method of Swedish massaging.
Another object is to provide a vibrator which may be easily and readily adjusted to obtain the desired vibration. I
It is still another object of the invention to provide a vibrator which is of simple and inex pensiveconstruction and flexible in operation,
A further object is to provide a vibrator in which several types of massage cushions are easily and readily interchangeable.
Still another object is the provision of a vi;- brator having a massage cushion provided with expansion springs through which the operator may place his fingers for giving a Swedish massage.
The above objects together with others which will be apparent from the drawings and-following description or which may be later reierred.
to, may be attained by constructing the improved electric vibrator in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 7 an elevation of a modified form of shell or asi ap l ed t the m o ed rator Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
. .Beferri-ng first tothe ,form of vibrator sh w;
in Figs. 1,2 and 3, a cylindric shell 18, which may be formed of sheet metal or other suitable material, is provided for housing the electro-magnet and armature of the improved vibrator.
The lower end of the shell l may be rounded as indicated at II, and provided with a central aperture I2, through which the armature is adapted. to reciprocate, as will be later described.
A flanged cover or lid I3 is provided for covering the upper open end of the shell l0, and is arranged to be held in position upon the shell by means of the screw M.
The magnet includes the inverted U-shape pole piece [5 formed of soft iron and connected tothe shell ID as by the screws IS. The magnet 0011 or solenoid H is mounted within the pole piece and the cross member I8 is connected to the lower ends of the pole piece l5 beneath the lower end of the magnet coil.
An adjusting screw [9 is threaded through the top of the pole piece It: and a lock nut is provided thereon for holding the screw in addusted position. This adjusting screw is provided with the internal threads 2! into which the screw I4 is threaded for holding the cover 13 upon the shell.
The magnet coil ll has a central vertical opening 22 therein and the reciprocating armature 23 is mounted for vertical sliding movement therein.
This armature has the reduced lower extension 24 slidably located through an aperture 25 in the cross piece 18 and an adjusting nut 26 is mounted thereon at a point spaced below the cross memher, a compression spring 27 being located around the reduced extension 24 of the armature between the cross member l8 and the nut. A further reduced extension 28 may be formed upon the armature below the nut 2i; for sliding movement through the aperture I2 in the lower end of the rounded bottom portion ll. of the shell. This extension terminates in a reduced threaded portion 29 by means of which themassage cushion may be attached to the armature.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, this massage -cushion may include a channel-shape member 3,0 of stamped sheet metal or the like provided at its side edges with down turned flanges 3! and having a. central threaded opening 32 or nut 33, or both, to receive the threaded lower end 29 of the armature.
The sponge-rubber cushion 34 is cemented or otherwise mounted within the inverted channel; shape holder 3i! and extendsa considerable dis- .tance below the flanges 3| ther of.
Eyes or hooks 35' are formed at the ends of tro-magnet within the shell including a U-shape pole piece, means detachably connecting the legsof the pole piece to the sides of the shell, a coil supported within the pole piece, a reciprocating armature mounted within the coil and extending through the lower rounded end of the shell, a massage cushion upon the lower end of the armature, an adjusting screw located through the pole piece for contact with the adjacent end of the armature to limit the throw of the armature in one direction, a lock nut for holding the adjusting screw in adjusted position, said adjusting screw being internally threaded, a removable April 11, 1944.
