Any suitable 'metal' maybe used inthe frame but silver is especially adapted to the invention.
Without` limiting the invention, it will be described by reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates one? embodiment thereof. f
`Figure 1 is a top planuview of `'a compact in openposition and Fig. 2 is a fragmentarysection :on-the line 2-2 of Fig. 1- with the compact Theco'mpact consists of a a vbottom member B, each v made upof a metal frame and a plasticmember. The top member has a metal frame member Ill which is shown as kannular and provided at its inner edge or periphery with a collar I I having at its upper` edge a rounded member I2 from which extends inwardly a ange I3 on which may rest a mirror I4. Below the rounded member I2 is an inwardly 'extending groove I5 in the collar. Associated with this is an outer hollow plastic cover member I6 which has a lower annular surface I'I corresponding generally to the annular plate member I. There is also provided an inner upwardly extending wall to the cover member I6 having at its lower edge an inwardly extending ring or rib I8 corresponding generally to the groove I5 and an upper outwardly curved portion I 9 corresponding generally to the rounded part I2 of the collar II. There is sufficient elasticity in the collar II and the plastic member I6 so that the plastic member may be forced downwardly past the curve I2 of the collar so that the ring IB will seat itself in the ange I5 as indicated in Fig. 2. This positioning will hold the outer member I6 in place with its annular surface I1 inv top member A and has a downwardly. :extending .wallI includingA a ring or rib 26 corresponding'to the groove 23 and 'an outwardly extending curved'- recess 2l corresponding to vthe curved edge2'2. There is sumcient elasticity in the Vmembers so' that thenbottomr plastic .member 24 'maylbevforced rupward over the collar2'l so .that when'the rring226passes the-curved por-tion 22 lit'- will-seat itself `in vthe groove 23j and. thus l'hold 'the lannular'l surface I 25 i-ncontact withthe annularplateZU';
lThe-top andbottommembers may be hinged together aty 28 by hinge members carried bythe annular plates IG and 20" 'lhere maybe provided 'any1 suitable catch member for holding the compact closed. As illustrated,"this includes a' pin 291,11thehea'df30 of Awhich passes' through and engages a hole 3l in ytheplatef Ill, a recess 32 beingprovided in the plastic member-V ISto allow entrance of the head 36.1 Thepin'29 is fmounted on aI thumb piece 33 which rests against a springf34 tending to hold the head 39 beyond the outer edge of the hole 3| so as to hold the compact closed. Pressure on the thumb piece 33 will cause the head 30 to move so that it may pass through the hole 3| allowing the compact to open. A recess 35,
.shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, may be provided in the bottom plastic member 24 so that the thumb piece 33 and the spring 34 may lie in this recess and against the annular plate 20.
The outer plastic members I6 and 24 will preferably be, as shown, of the same diameter as the annular plates I0 and 20. This Vwill provide a neat, attractive appearance to the compact, which may Seem to be made entirely of the exposed plastic, although the edges of the metal members may show. There are visible no rivets, screws, etc., to interfere with vthe regular attractive appearance of the device. The compact is shown circular in form, but this is not essential to all aspects of the invention. The frames or the plastic outer members, or both, may be made of other shapes and sizes. The plastic outer members may be larger or smaller than the frame members I0 and 20, and various other changes in the construction and operation may be present in structures embodying the present invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a compact, a top member comprising a relatively flat annular plate, an upstanding collar at its inner periphery, anv inwardly extending groove at the bottom of the collar, a concave outer circular plastic member having a lower an- -nular surface and an inner cylindrical wall rising said upper annularsurfac'e with any inwardly pro-v jecting ring adapted to engage the last mentioned groove and hold the bottom outer member inA place; and means for hinging the bottom and top" members together.
2. A compact member comprising arelatively A, flat annular plate, an upstanding collar at its in-l ner periphery, an inwardly extending grooveon" the collar, an outer concave circular plastic mem# ber with an annular surface and an inner cylins cumference as the annular plate and having a lower annular surface of substantially the same width as the annular plate and having an inner cylindrical wall rising from the lower annular surface with an inwardly lprojecting ring so arranged that the projecting ring will engage the groove in the collar and hold the plate in contact with the annular surface; a bottom member comprising a relatively at annular plate, a downwardly extending collar at its inner periphery,
Yan outwardly extending ring surrounding the drical wall extending from the annular surface with an inwardly projecting ring and adapted to slide resiliently over .thecollarso thatthe projecting ringr will engage'the ygroove and hold-the outer member inv place. l
3.^A compact 'member comprising a relatively flat plate having avhole through it, an upstanding collar about the ,edge *of the hole having; an inwardly extending grooveA on the collar,l an outer concave plastic member provided with a. cavity forming a hole'and having a relatively flatsurfv face surrounding` said holean inner wall sur` rounding the last vmentioned hole, and an inwardly extending ridge 4in the wall, the wall of the outer member being adapted to slide resiliently over the collar so that1the ridgewill engage the groove and hold the plateagainst the flat surface.r
4. In a compactaptop member comprising a relatively flat annular plate, an upstanding collar at its inner periphery, an outwardly extending, ring surrounding the collar providing a groove at the bottom of the collar, an outer concave circular plastic member having substantially the same circollar providing a groove at the top of the collar,
" a concave outer circular plastic member having substantially the same circumference as the bottom annular plate and having an upper annular surface substantially the same width as the last VI'nf'en'tio'ned"annular'plate and having an inner .cylindrical wall depending fromv the said upper annular surface with an inwardly projecting ring and so arranged that said inwardly projecting ring will engage the last mentioned groove and hold the last mentioned plate in contact with 'the last `mentioned annular' surface. and. means for hingingthe annular plates together. Y
5. A .compactmember comprising a relatively flat annular metal plate', an,.upstanding integral collar at its inner periphery, an outwardly extending ring on the collar providinga groove at the junction of the plate and the collar, and a concave outer circular plastic member having substantiallyrthe same circumference as the annular plate and having an annularvsurface-substantially thelsame ywidth as the annular plate and having anfinnertcylindrical .wall extending away from the annular'surface and conforming- ALFRED r.
