My invention is concerned with a belt applicable to the waist band of a skirt, trousers, or the like, and is characterized by the provision of a short elastic band to opposite ends of which are connect-ed like fittings each including a terminal to which is hinged a clip adapted to be placed over the waist band for positioning thereupon. A pair of such belts, each of short length, say six or eight inches, are desirably used, one upon each hip.

The features of improvement which are contained in the present belt make for simplicity, low cost, and durability. The construction is one in which the fittings may be produced entirely from sheet metal by die operations, the parts thus formed being alike for each end of the belt. Each fitting comprises two hinged parts one furnishing an anchorage for an end of the elastic band and the other a clip applicable to the garment waist band, and both together cooperating to compress the waist band relative to the clip, whereby the tting is secured in a xed position.

A suggestive embodiment of this invention is set forth in the accompanying drawing, Wherein- Figure l shows in perspective a pair of trousers to the waist band of which is secured a pair of the present belts;

To the waist band W of a skirt, trousers, slacks, or other garment whose upper edge terminates in the Waist region, I apply a pair of belts, one opposite each hip. Each belt includes a short elastic band B to opposite ends of which are secured fittings each comprising a terminal T to which is hinged a clip C. These two ttings are alike except that one is the reverse of the other, consequently a description of but one will suice.

As best shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the terminal is in the form of a metallic plate I at one end of which is a reverse bend II from which extends a panel I2 which lies parallel to but spaced from the plate I0. A pair of flanges I3 are laterally extended from the plate to meet the edges of the panel, thereby completing a narrow rectangular socket, open at one end I4, for the reception of one end portion of the elastic band B.

Desirably the plate is formed with a boss I5 elongated in a direction parallel with its ends and extending inwardly thereof into the socket. A complementary recess I5 is formed in the panel opposite this boss, these two parts forming in effect a kink within the terminal such that the band is crimped in consequence. In this way the band may be firmly anchored to the terminal. In the region of the bend I I I provide a U-shaped slit I1 which defines a lug I8 adapted to remain extended laterally from the terminal adjacent its reverse bend. This lug is shown as formed with teeth or serrations I9 along its protruding edge.

The clip may be produced from a plate 25 having a slot 26 through which is received the reverse bend of the terminal, thereby providing a hinged connection therefor. As shown, the clip plate is extended upwardly slightly beyond the proximate flange of the terminal, and is then arched laterally at 2l and continued downwardly to provide a spring tongue 28. This tongue depends in spaced relation to the clip plate so that in the passageway therebetween the garment waist band W may be frictionally received. It is obvious that the clip may be readily applied in place by a downward push over the edge of the waist band with the tongue lying to the inside thereof.

In the operation of attaching the fitting in place, the terminal may, if required, be swung slightly about its hinged connection with the clip so as to cause the toothed lug I8 to recede slightly away from the clip tongue. In this way a sufcient clearance will be afforded for facile reception of the waist band into the passageway within the clip. When the fitting is pushed down to its limit, the tension of the elastic band will cause the terminal to assume the position best .shown in Fig. 2 Where it will be noted the toothed edge of the lug I8 has advanced against the outer face of the waist band thereby compressing it against one edge of the spring tongue. In this way the clip is secured immovably upon the waist band so that dependable functioning of the belt will be assured,

I claim:

l. A supporting belt attachable to a garment waist band including an elastic band and connected thereto a pair of fittings, one at each end of the band and each comprising a terminal secured to the band and, in hinged connection therewith, a spring clip removably attachable over the waist band, the clip being formed with an inner depending tongue dening to the outside thereof a narrow space for accomodation o1' the waist band and the terminal being provided with a toothed lug protruding outwardly toward the outer side oi the waist band for engagement therewith at a point adjacent the clip tongue against which the material of the waist band is compressed whereby to lock the clip fixedly in place thereupon.
