Application December 10, 1941, Serial No. 422,449
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in holders for containing ice cream cones and holding the same upright on a serving tray, or the like, the principal object in view being to provide a light weight, easily cleaned, and inexpensive device of this character for holding a number of cones and which is adapted for quick and easy attachment to or detachment from a service tray such as is used in waiting on table or for curb service attachment to automobile doors.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in top plan illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section of the holder taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation of a modifled form of holder,
Figure 5 is a view in top plan of the modified form of holder, and
Figure 6 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, and first to Figures 1 to 3 thereof, my improved holder, in its preferred embodiment, comprises an elongated rectangular base panel I of any suitable light, resilient metal, said panel having downturned ends 2 forming rests for supporting the panel on a table or the like and downturned side edge flanges 3 for reinforcing the panel. The ends 2 are provided with intermediate beads 4 forming transverse internal grooves 5 in said ends extending across the same and for seating therein the upper edge heads 6 at opposite sides of the usual service tray 1, whereby the panel l may be attached to said tray to extend across and above the same. The bottom edge portions of the ends 2 are curved outward- 1y, as at ii so that said portions will slide downwardly past the beads 5 and provide for engagement of the grooves 5 with said beads, with a snap action.
In the longitudinal center of the panel I is a row of equidistantly spaced, upstanding, elongated shells 8 tapering downwardly and open at both ends. The shells 8 are fitted at their smallor ends in suitable openings 9 provided in the panel I. As will be understood, the shells B are designed to contain ice cream cones, not shown, and by virtue of their lower open ends provide for drainage of ice cream leaking from a broken or saturated cone into the tray 1.
The smaller ends of the shells 8 may be permanently secured in the openings 9 or frictionally fitted therein for detachment in cleaning.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 4 to 6, the panel In is provided with a back I I having keyhole slots i2 therein for hanging the panel on hooks or the like when the holder is not in use. Otherwise the construction and arrangement in the modified form is the same as that described with reference to the preferred embodiment.
In both embodiments of the invention, the panel I, or H], is slidable along the beads 6 of the tray into an out-of-the-way position so that the greater portion of the tray may be used, if desired.
To detach the panels I, ill from a tray, it is merely necessary to spring the ends of the panel outwardly, as will be clear.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suifice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention is susceptible of modification in other respects than as herein set forth without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such other modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:
A holder for ice cream cones and attachment to the beaded side edges of a service tray, said holder comprising an elongated rectangular panel, means on the ends of said panel for attaching the same to said edges of the tray, a plurality of elongated cone containing shells upstanding from said panel in the longitudinal center thereof in spaced apart relation, said shells tapering downwardly for fitting around the cones contained therein and opening through the panel to drain into said tray, and an upstanding panel forming flange extending along one side edge of said panel of substantially the height of the shells and for use in handling the holder.
