UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB GEIGER, OF BUOYRUS, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR FORMING EYES ON WIRE BAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,022, dated November 2, 1880.
' Application filed September 1, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB GEIGER, of Bucyrus, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Machinefor Formingthe Eyes on Wire Bails for Buckets; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the machine with the wire in the machine ready for bending. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the machine, showing the wire bent and ready for removal. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the machine.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine which will, with great rapidity and uniformity, bend the eyes of wire bails for buckets, kettles, 850.; and my invention consists in a die to receive the wire to be bent, in combination with a lever to hold the wire in the die and an adjustable eye-forming lever.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, AA are the supports of the machine, to which is secured the bedplate B, provided at one end with an offset car, a, for a purpose hereinafter described. On the front upper edge of the bed-plate is a bar, 0, provided with a curved end, a, be-
. tween which and the ear a is pivoted a horizontal lever, D, bearingan adjustable grooved bending-roller, I), made adjustable by means of a slot in the lever, through which passes the bolt on which roller 1) turns.
On the rear of the bed-plate is secured a bar, E, having a curved edge, 6, so arranged by bolts and slots as to be adjustable and allow sufficient intervening space between it and bar 0 to receive the wire to be bent. At one end of bar E rises a vertical post, F, to which is pivoted a cam-lever, G, turning in a vertical plane to hold the wire against the bed-plate.
Inserted between bars 0 and E on the bedplate is an adjusting device consisting of a piece of metal. I, having one straight edge, 2', lying against bar 0, and a curved edge, a, approaching bar E, and forming part of the channel W, in which the wire lies. A slot, 0, llLthG piece I and bolt 19 allow a longitudinal adjustment of said piece, which closes or opens channel W to a greater or less degree, to suit differing sizes of wires. The wire being inserted in channel W, as seen in Fig. 1, lever D is brought around to the position shown in Fig. 2, and the grooved wheel b, bearin g against the wire, bends it around the curved former at, making the bail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A machine for bending eyes on wire bails, consisting of the bed-plate B and bars C and E, in combination with the horizontal lever D, provided with an adjustable grooved bendingwheel, I), and the vertical cam-lever G, substantially as described.
