This invention relates to a container made from cardboard or some similar material which may be used for displaying various articles, such for instance as confections; and the construction i particularly designed for a container which will have a curved shape, such for instance as a heart shape.
In the formation of containers of curved outline, such for instance as the shape of a heart, the side walls of the container which is curved has heretofore been rather expensive to construct and has been of a somewhat clumsy construction adaptable to hold only very light weight articles and in many instances the side walls have been formed separate from the bottom wall and attached thereto by cementing or the like.
One of the objects of this invention is to simplify the formation of a container having a curved shape, particularly a heart, to eliminate the necessity of utilizing two pieces of stock for the formation of the same.
Another object of this invention is to provide a container from a single piece of sheet stock in which the bottom walls and sid walls which are folded therefrom may be of such a shape as to substantially reinforce the side Walls.
Another object of this invention is to provide interlocking means not only between the ends of the meeting side walls but also between the side walls and the bottom wall While at the same time providing a' reinforcement each with the other that a rigid construction may be obtained.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In proceeding with this invention the contour of the bottom wall is formed flat and then the side walls are attached along a short length of the bottom wall at a curved portion thereof to extend in opposite directions and of a length so that when folded up at right angles to the bottom wall they may follow the contour of the bottom wall and meet with the ends of a similar side wall. Interlocking means are then provided so that these meeting ends of the side walls may interlock one with the other and also look with the bottom wall so as to maintain the side walls in upright position along the edge of the bottom wall and the following is a more detailed description of the construction by which the invention is accomplished.
With reference to the drawings, Fig. 3 illustrates a plan view of the blank as cut from sheet stock. It consists of a flat body section II) having the contour II of heart shape which forms the bottom wall. Strips designated generally I2 and I3 and of the same piece of stock as the section II) are attached as at I 4 and I5 thereto along the curved outline thereof. These strips extend in opposite directions and are scored as at I4 and I5 to fold upwardly at right angles to the section II). Strips I2 and I3 are scored as at I6 and I! to be folded upon themselves as shown at I8 in Fig. 4 and provide a double side wall designated I9 and 20 also illustrated in Fig. 4. These side walls when bent at right angles to the bottom section Iii may be bent or curved to follow the contour II of the bottom section I0 and will be provided of such a length that these side walls will meet at the point ZI of the bottom section, and also meet at the apex 22 of the indented portion of the heart opposite this point 2I.
The strip I2 is provided with a tab 23 which extends beyond the wall I9 and fits into or between the folds of the double wall 20 so as to assist in retaining these walls in meeting relation as shown in Fig. 1. This tab 23 is illustrated as about to be inserted between the folds of the side Wall 20 in Fig. 7. Locking ears 24 and 25 are also provided on the strips I2 and I3 which extend from the walls I9 and 20 as shown in Fig. 4 to enter the slits 26 and 2! in the bottom section I 0. The ears are provided with hooks 28 to be retained in the slits 26 and 21 after insertion therein in the manner shown in Figs. and 7.
Flanges 29 and 30 are provided along the straight portion of the bottom section l0 extending from the point 2| thereof to be folded along score lines 3| and 32 upwardly at right angles to the bottom section Hi to interlock with and provide a reinforcement for the side walls when secured in position.
The side walls I9 and 20 of double construction from their point of attachment may be curved to extend along the straight edge contour of the heart and as these side walls open downwardly they are adapted to receive and do receive the flanges 29 and 30 which are folded upwardly from the bottom section IE1. Flange 29 is slotted as at 33 and a tab 33' formed on the strip l3 extending beyond the side wall 20 extends into this slot 33 so as to hold the side wall locked in position at the apex. Side wall is also straddles the flange 29 and is held in position by such relation. A segment 34 is formed on the strip l3 and segment 35 on the strip 12. Segment 34 is scored as at 36 and folded along this score line to extend beneath and reinforce the bottom section Hi. This portion is of a shape to just-coincide with the shape of the bottom over the pointed end of the heart. Segment which is scored at 31 is folded along its score line and is of a shape to just overlie the segment 34. A tab 38' is provided on the segment 35 to extend into slot 39 positioned along the score line 36 at a location to receive the tab 38.
After the box has been blanked out, scored and slotted as shown in Fig. 3 it is usually preferable in assembling the box to first fold up the flanges 29 and 30, then fold up the strip l3 and assemble the wall 20 thus folded up as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. then to fold up the strip [2 and assemble the wall 19 thus formed first at thev bottom or point end as shown in Fig. '7 and lastly to tuck the tab 23 in between the plies of the wall 20 and then lock car 24 into the slot 23.
After the box is formed complete as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 it will be readily observed that I have provided a very strong construction consisting of three plies of stock along the point end portion of the heart-shaped box and three ply construction of side wall along this same portion while a double ply side wall extends throughout the remainder of thebox. The locking ears 24 and 25 are also sufficiently large so as to reinforce at the same time that they lock the side walls of the box at the apex of the indented portion of the heart shape while providing at this location a double ply of material.
I claim:
1. A box body comprising a flat bottom section of heart shape, opposite side walls of the same piece of material folded upwardly at the opposite sides of the curvature thereof and folded outwardly upon themselves to be of double thickness and extending to the point of the angle of the heart and to the apex of the indented portion thereof opposite said point, and cooperating means between said bottom section and outer folds of the side walls for locking the meeting ends of the side walls together and to the bottom wall.
2. A box body comprising a flat bottom section of heart shape having straight portions, opposite side walls of the same piece of material folded upwardly at the opposite sides of the curvature thereof and folded outwardly upon themselves to be of double thickness and extending to the point of the angle of the heart and to the apex of the indented portion thereof opposite said point, and cooperating means between said bottom section and side walls for locking the meeting ends of the side walls together and to the bottom wall and a flange folded upwardly along the straight portion of the contour of the bottom section extending between the double thickness of said side wall.
3. A box body comprising a. flat bottom section of heart shape having straight portions, opposite side walls of the same piece of material folded upwardly at the opposite sides of the curvature thereof and folded outwardly upon themselves to be of double thickness and extending to the point of the angle of the heart and. to the apex of the indented portion thereof opposite said point, and cooperating means between said bottom section and side walls for locking the meeting ends of the side walls together and to the bottom wall and a flange folded upwardly along the straight portion of the contour of the bottom section extending between the double thickness of said side wall and a tab at the end of one of said side walls and a slot in the end portion of a flange interlocking with the other side wall to secure said wall in position.
4. A box body comprising a flat bottom section of heart shape, opposite side walls of the same piece of material folded upwardly at the opposite sides of the curvature thereof and extending to the point of the angle of the heart and to the apex of the indented portion thereof opposite said point, and cooperating means between said bottom section and side walls for locking the meeting ends of the side walls together and to the bottom wall and reinforcing bottom segments on the side wall strips folded one over the other beneath the bottom section and interlocking means to secure them in position.
5. A box body comprising a flat bottom section of heart shape, opposite side walls of the same piece of material folded upwardly at the opposite sides of the curvature thereof and extending to the point of the angle of the heart and to the apex of the indented portion thereof opposite said point, and cooperating means between said bottom section and side walls for locking the meeting ends of the side walls together and to the bottom wall and reinforcing bottom segments on the side wall strips folded beneath the bottom section, a tab on one of said segments and a slot at the junction of the other segment and the :idoe wall from which it is folded to receive said 6. A box body comprising a flat bottom section of heart shape, opposite side walls of the same piece of material folded upwardly at the opposite sides of the curvature thereof and extending to the point of the angle of the heart and to the apex of the indented portion thereof opposite 2,337,416 said point, and cooperating means between said bottom section and side walls for locking the meeting ends of the'side walls together and to the bottom wall, tabs at the ends of said side walls adjacent said apex and slits in the bottom wall for receiving said tabs to assist in holding the side wall in position.
8. A one-piece blank for a box body, comprising a bottom forming section of heart-shaped contour and opposite side wall forming strips each connected to said bottom section at opposite sides thereof along a, portion of the curvature of the contour of the bottom section and extending in opposite direction from said point of connection, and cooperating means between said bottom and side wall forming strips to lock the side walls in a, position at right angles to and following the contour of the bottom section.
9. A one-piece blank for a box body, comprising a bottom forming section of heart-shaped conj tour and opposite side wall forming strips each connected to said bottom section at opposite sides thereof along a portion of the curvature of the contour of the bottom section and extending in opposite direction from said point of connection, said strips being creased to fold upon themselves and provide a wall of double thickness and cooperating means between said bottom and side wall forming strips to lock the side walls in a position at right angles to and following the contour of the bottom section.

A one-piece blank for a box body, comprising a bottom forming section of heart-shaped contour and opposite side wall forming strips each connected to said bottom section at opposite sides thereof along a portion of the curvature of the contour of the bottom section and extending in opposite direction from said point of connection, and cooperating means between said bottom and side wall forming strips to lock the side walls in a position at right angles to and following the contour of the bottom section, said strips carrying segments to fold from the edge of the strips and extend beneath the bottom wall to reinforce the same.
11. A one-piece blank for a box body, comprising a bottom forming section of heart-shaped contour and opposite side wall forming strips at opposite sides thereof extending in opposite directions from a point along the curvature of the contour of the bottom section, said strips being creased to fold upon themselves and provide a wall of double thickness, and cooperating means between said bottom and side wall forming strips to lock the side walls in a. position at right angles to and following the contour of the bottom section, said bottom section having portion creased along the straight sides thereof to be folded upwardly to provide flanges to cooperate with said side walls.
12. A one-piece blank for a box body, comprising a bottom forming section of heart-shaped contour and opposite side wall forming strips each connected to said bottom section at opposite sides thereof along a portion of the curvature of the contour of the bottom section and extending in opposite directions from said point of connection and with said strips extending substantially parallel to each other, and cooperating means between said bottom and side wall forming strips to lock the side walls in a. position at right angles to and following the contour of the bottom section.
