HAND COMPEEE'SSION DIE FQR COLLAPSENG METAL SEALS 2 Claims.
The object of the present invention is to provide a manually operable compression die for collapsing metal seals of the class in which opposed interfitting members carried'by a unitary bent strip are brought together and interlocked by compression and collapsing operation relatively to the said interfitting members.
The specific object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind which will be powerful in its action and simple in construction.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly broken away, showing compression die members in position preliminary to an active stroke, a metal seal being shown in position, by dotted lines, and an article to be sealed being shown by dotted lines interposed between the two elements of the seal which are interfitted and collapsed by an active stroke of the device.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing the position of the parts at the end of a compression stroke.
Figure 3 is a plan view, partly in section, the
section being taken on the line 3-3, Figure 1, and
the movable handle member being removed.
Figure 4 is a front end elevation with the upper handle member broken away, the elevation being taken on the line 4-41, Figure 2 Figure 5 is a fragmentary view showing the link connection between the upper handle member and the compression die.
Referring to the drawing it will be seen that the device comprises a lower member i serving as a casing for the operative parts, the lower member being formed with a horizontal arm ix,
the latter being provided with a vertical aperture to receive the headed centering point 2, the latter being engaged by spiral spring 3, the lower end of which abuts an adjusting stud 4 threaded in the said aperture.
The upper end of the housing I is forked, thus providing two parallel guide plate-like sections lzva: between which is slidably disposed the compression die member 5. Slightly below their top faces plate-like sections Ira: are incut to receive an abutment plate 6 which is secured in position by screws indicated at 1.
At its lower portion the compression die 5 is formed with a vertical aperture to receive the headed centering point 21c which is engaged by a spiral spring 8.
The compression die centrally thereof at 9 is formed with a channelway open at its top, the base of the channelway being curvilinear,
as shown in Figure 1, and in the channelway is provided at Ill a link H which is pivoted at 12 to the cam head 13:1: of manually operable lever arm 15 which lever arm is operated in conjunction with an arm l5 carried by the housing 1 The cam head 13a: of lever arm I4 is pivoted at 16 between the plate-like sections iccx of the housing and it has an eccentric nose 13:03:, Figures 1 and 2, carrying a roller 11 which engages the upper cam face at a of the compression die. It will thus be noted that the pivot 12 holds both the link i I and roller 17 in position relatively to the cam head 13:0 of the manually operable lever arm I l.
Formed in the casing rearwardly of the compression die is a vertical aperture which receives a spring IS, the spring engaging a post 20 carried by the compression die and serving to normally maintain the die in the position of Figure 1.
Immediately below the centering point 2:1: of the compression die is a plate 21 held in position against die 5 by the screws 22. This plate controls in part the lowermost position of the compression die since by reducing the thickness of the plate the lowermost position of the die is correspondingly reduced and by shimming the plate or housing the lowermost position of the die is increased. Also the plate holds in position the centering point 2:10.
In the operation of the device, a metallic seal comprising members which penetrate the article which is to be sealed, as, for example, an ear of an animal or the body of a fur or skin, which seal may be of the type shown by dotted lines in Figures 1 and 2 at 23, will be placed in position so that the members of the seal to be interfitted and collapsed as shown at 24, 243:, will be centered by the centering pins 2, 23:. The article to be sealed, i. e., the member Figure 1, is placed intermediate the members 24, 243:, and thereupon the movable lever arm is brought down toward the lever arm I5. In such action the eccentric or cam nose 53am: of the head l3x will, through roller 11, ride up the inclined cam face a, of the compression die, and, at the same time, the toggle comprising the nose l3xa: of the link M will move toward straight position, this action exerting very substantial force upon the compression die and moving it downward. In such action members 2 5, 24x, will penetrate the article 25 and member 24 will enter the larger member 24m and thereafter the base of member 24 will be collapsed and spread over the margins of the base of member 24a: so as to efiectively lock the said interfitting member together.
Upon release of the manually operable lever l4 spring I9 will return the parts to the position of Figure 1 and the device will again be ready for action.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. A hand compression die for collapsing metal seals comprising a casing having a rigid underlying jaw and opposed guide walls disposed above the jaw, a movable die member slidably positioned between said guide walls and formed with an upper cam face, seal centering means carried by the jaw and the die, a compression lever pivoted between the opposed guide walls of the casing and having a laterally projecting nose adapted to engage the cam face of the die for actuation of the die in a compression movement of the latter, the die being formed with a channelway below the cam face thereof, and a link pivoted to the die and to the said nose of the lever, the link and said nose of the compression lever constituting a toggle which straightens in the movement of the compression lever in an active movement of the die.
2. A hand compression die for collapsing metal seals comprising a casing having a rigid underlying jaw and opposed guide walls disposed above the jaw, a removable guide plate closure at right angles to said guide walls, a movable die member slidably positioned between said guide walls and formed with an upper cam face, seal centering means carried by the jaw and die, a removable plate carried by the lower face of the die and apertured for passageway of the die seal centering means, a compression lever pivoted between the opposed guide walls of the casing and having a nose eccentrically positioned with respect to the lever pivot point, a roller carried by said nose and engaging the cam face of the die for direct action thereon in an operative movement of the die, a link pivoted to the die and swingable in a channelway formed in the die, the link having a connection with the lever nose coaxial with the roller and forming with the nose a toggle which is brought into straight line position in an active movement of the die, and a spring engaging the die.
