This invention relates to improvements in dandy roll construction and is directed more particularly to an improved dandy roll construction having a novel shell or sleeve member which is readily slipped onto a support or frame member in sleeve-like fashion and which carries a covering. As will appear, the sleeve or shell is economical and easy to manufacture and the Whole arrangement is adapted to have an outer covering of metal fabric capable of facile adjustment and securement relative to the support and sleeve.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a dandy roll construction including a frame or support and sleeve thereon and covering therefor wherein the parts are permanently united together. This makes for firmness and strength as well as simplicity and economy in handling and manufacture.
By reason of the special construction about to be described, it is particularly easy to obtain extraordinary results in the manufacture of either so-called laid or woven paper. That is to say, construction is such as to permit various desired designs to be formed in the paper and preferably, too, such that relatively thin papers, such as cigarette papers, can be made with satisfaction.
As a special feature of the invention, there is a sleeve or shell member of screen-like construction so associated with a core or frame member as to be capable of flexing relative thereto to a desired degree and in addition there is a covering of metal fabric which is so associated with these parts as to prevent the sleeve from sliding longitudinally a y of its support or the cover from sliding relative to the other parts, all of which provides 'a core, with the frame and covering held in relatively rigid relation for positive driving of the dandy roll relative to the movin Fourdrinier wire or paper web being supported thereby.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a frame or support member for use in the dandy roll construction of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a screen or shell member for use in association with the member shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a partial elevaticnal view showing a peripheral portion of one of the ring members of the shell shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4= is a plan view of an end plate member used in connection with the roll construction of the invention;
Fig. 5 is an end elevational View of what is shown in Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a dandy roll embodying the novel features of the invention; and

Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the novel features of the invention Will be described.
A dandy roll frame or body is represented by 2 Which has heads 4 at opposite ends that are provided with shafts or trunnions ii. The heads have longitudinally extending members t secured thereto and there may be an interial spiral or other element such as it. The members described are secured together and arranged to provide a strong and rigid structure.
A shell construction is represented by 20 in Fig. 2. This shell includes a plurality of spaced, relatively thin metal rin s 22 having longitudinally extending rods 24 passing therethrough that are secured thereto as by welding, soldering, brazing or the like. Some of the rods, such as 24, may be disposed an-gularly relative to the others if desired.
A plurality of relatively small wires 26 extend through the discs or rings 22 in closely spaced relation around and closely adjacent the peripheries of the rings and are secured in place by welding, soldering or brazing. The wires are made taut before securement to the rings. This shell 20 is constructed and arranged to slide over the frame or body, the opening in the rings being such as to releasably receive the body.
End rings or plates 34] are provided that are of metal and preferably somewhat thicker than the rings 22. These end rings have openings 32 for receiving the shafts or central parts of the frame end heads 4 and are adapted to be disposed against the outside of said heads.
In assembling the parts of the dandy roll the shell 29 is slipped over the frame 2 and the rings 30 are located outside and against the end heads 4 of the said frame.
A covering C for the dandy roll which may be woven metal fabric of any desired pattern or weave is wrapped around the shell and its adiacent edges extending longitudinally of the roll are secured together in some suitable manner as by stitching, brazing or welding. At each end of the dandy the end of the covering C is secured to the peripheries of ring 30 and the endmost ring 22 of the shell, while said endmost ring 22, the ring 3!] and head 4 of the frame are secured together so that the frame, shell and covering are secured together at the ends of the dandy. The securing may be accomplished by soldering, brazing, Welding or any other suitable means.
The shell is a self-sustaining unit for supporting the covering and is somewhat yieldable or resilient so that when the units are secured together at their ends as described the covering C is supported by a somewhat yieldable or resilient structure so as to give as the paper maker terms it. It is desired that the dandy have somewhat yieldable surface as distinguished from a hard, rigid non-yieldable surface and the novel construction accomplishes that result.
It is desired that the finished dandy roll be crowned slightly, that is that it be slightly larger in diameter at its center than at its ends, after the manner of a pulley with the increase being a few thousandths of an inch.
Also it is desired that the dandy roll be relatively less flexible at the central part than from the center to its ends.
To provide the more rigid and less flexible central part the frame 2 may be such that the fit therebetween and the shell is tighter in the central portion thereof. Or the rings of shell 20 at the central part may have central openings of less diameter than those at the sides thereof. To provide the crown the elements of the frame may be formed so as to crown the shell or the elements of the shell may be arranged to provide the crown in the shell and the crown of the frame may at the same time provide the tight fit between the frame and shell.
The flexibility or yieldability of the roll enables the dandy to function for its purpose more efiiciently than where it is rigid and the crown referred to together with the yieldable characteristics enables the roll to conform to the transverse contour of the wire to enhance the operation thereof.
The construction makes it possible to remove and replace the covering readily and easily when and if desired while at the same time the construction is light in Weight and rigid while at the same time having the desired yieldability and flexibility of surface.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein,
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A dandy roll construction comprising in combination, a supporting frame including secured together end heads provided with shafts, a shell around said frame including longitudinal- 1y spaced relatively thin sheet metal rings and a plurality of relatively fine wires extending through and secured to said rings, separate rings abutting said end heads of the frame and endmost rings of the shell, and a covering around said shell, said covering, separate ring, end head and endmost ring of the shell at each end of the dandy roll being secured together providing a composite structure wherein the frame, shell and covering are secured together.
2. A dandy roll construction comprising in combination, a supporting frame including end heads spaced apart and secured together by iongitudinal members, shafts extending outwardly from said heads, a shell including longitudinally spaced relatively thin sheet metal rings secured together by longitudinal members with said rings supported on the longitudinal members of the frame, separate rings on said shafts in abutment with the end heads and endmost rings of the shell, a covering around said shell and secured thereto having its opposite end portions overlying the peripheries of said separate rings, said separate rings, end portions of the covering and endmost rings of the shell secured together providing a composite structure wherein the frame, shell and covering are secured together.
