2 Claims.
This invention relates to a loom apparatus and to a method for making fabricated tubes or the like, such as may be used, for example, as hose.
Heretofore, reinforced rubber hose has been made with a woven reinforcement on a loom (usually a vertical loom), the reinforcement being woven on :a fixed spindle and drawn from the spindle as a woven tube to be later incorporated in the rubber hose.
One purpose of the present invention is to provide a method and apparatus whereby a hose may be directly fabricated upon a mandrel, the reinforcement being woven onto an inner tube of rubber or the like on the mandrel and an outer tube of rubber or the like being applied over the reinforcement and then the tube cured or vulcanized while on the mandrel on which it is fabricated.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a horizontal loom construction.
The foregoing and other purposes of the invention are attained in the apparatus and the method illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described below. It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specic form thereof illustrated and described.

Figure 1 is a plan View, partly broken away, of apparatus embodying and adapted to carry out the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly broken away and partly in section `and somewhat enlarged.
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the loom proper, enlarged and partly broken away and in section.
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the loom as shown in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detailed section along line 5 5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is an enlarged View illustrating the manner of fabricating a hose on a mandrel by the use of the apparatus in accordance with the invention, and
Figure 7 is a section through the tube, as it would appear along line 'I--l of Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I 0 designates generally a loom which in its principal constructional features is substantially identical with vertical looms as heretofore constructed for fabricating tubes of textile, wire, or the like. It has in it the usual circumferentially arranged heddles II, II' with which are associated circumferential series of guides and tensioning devices I2, I2 over which the ends to be woven into the fabricated tube may. be trained and extended to the heddles in a known manner, as indicated in Figure 3 at i3, these ends preferably being extended to the tensioning devices from vertically arranged tension rollers I4, I4, as indicated in Figures 1 and 2. Arranged to rotate in the loom in the usual association with the heddles II are a series of shuttles I 5, I5, which have thereon ring-gear sectors IB, I6 which are driven by a series of gears Il, I'I, arranged circumferentially about the loom on shafts I8 and which shafts are driven by a series of gears I9, I9 thereon which are in turn meshed with a gear 28 attached to a center drum 2I which in the particular horizontal loom apparatus herein disclosed is arranged on horizontal bearings 22, 22 to rotate about a xed drum 23. The heddle actuating means is indicated generally at 24 and in the present construction may be identical with heddle-actuating means usually used in the vertical loom. The shuttles I5, I5 may be arranged rotatably to be supported on the usual bearings 25, 25 on which they are retained for rotation by gibs 26 and, in order to Afurther adapt this construction for eiective use in a horizontal position, the gibs 26 are formed with extensions 2l' -adapted to bear on a circumferential series of rollers 28, 28 mounted at each side of the shuttles on the loom structure. The rollers 28 cause the shuttles to take a true path of rotation in the loom about a horizontal axis and without wobbling.
The loom structure ID is set up on a specially designed base 29 for supporting it in its preferred horizontal position. This base is designed to support the usual loom structure as indicated at the points 3G, 30 and 3|, as by means of bolts. The outer end of the loom is supported by a special stanchion, as indicated at 32, so that there will not be any unsupported overhanging load. The element 33 isthe standard base of a vertical loom which is supported in a vertical position on the horizontal base 29 and affords a bracing and supporting structure for the horizontally positioned loom.
Extending through the member or element 33 is the usual loom operating shaft 34 on which is a driven gear 35 meshing with gear 35 in the usual way to rotate the drum center 2l and the cam casings of the heddle-operating mechanism 21! which is all usual construction in vertical looms. Shaft 34 is geared to drive shaft t@ which is driven as by pulley 3l, belting 3S, and motor-driven pulley 39 operated by motor iii). The usual manual means such as handwheel ii weaving fabric tubes upon inexible mandrels of predetermined length comprising a horizontal bearing structure having arranged thereon the usual heddle-operating mechanisms and including an element arranged to revolve about a horizontal axis and having thereon gearing for operating the usual revolving shuttles, the frame of said loom being supported upon a horizontal base in which is supported drive mechanism for rotating said revolving element, a conveyor aligned with said loom for receiving and moving a mandrel axially through the loom, and driving connections on said base between said drive mechanism and said conveyor for driving said conveyor in synchronism With the revolution of said element whereby ends from the loom are Woven onto the surface of the moving mandrel, said connections including removable and replaceable change-speed gears arranged between the loom-driving means and the conveyor-driv- 10 ing means.
