This invention relates to a novel ladys compact.

The prime object of my present invention centers about the provision of a lady compact which is fabricated without the use of any metal parts and which, nevertheless, presents a highly attractive and very serviceable ladys compact.

The current war, in placing metal on the so called priority list, has resulted in the prevention of its use for the manufacture or fabrication of such non-essential war commoditie as ladies compacts or vanity cases. Th most attractive types of compacts and vanity cases have been those which were fabricated either partly or wholly out of metal. serviceable or acceptable for a product such as a ladys compact or vanity case, unless such a product can be made in a highly distinctive or attractive form. The object of my present invention resides in the provision of a ladys compact or vanity case made wholly of non-metallic materials and embodied in a form or constructional design which is distinctive and Very attractive.

An ancillary object of my present invention relates to the provision of such a ladys compact or vanity case, which, in addition to the foregoing, satisfies the needs of manufacture and the conveniences of use such as the ability to manufacture the product in large quantities and at a reasonable cost and to make the same in a variety of colors and materials, and the ability to use the same in Ways that are consonant with the customary use of the ordinary metallic type of compact and vanity case.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention relates to the ladys compact as hereinafter sought to be defined in the claims and as described in the specification taken with the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the compact of my present invention;

Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional View thereof taken on an enlarged scale and showing the compact in an open condition;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view thereof taken on an enlarged scale;

Fig. 4 is another fragmentary cross-sectional view thereof;

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing a modification; and

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view taken in crosssection in the plane of the line 66 of Fig. 5.

Referring now more in detail to the drawing Metal substitutes are not and having reference first to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, the ladys compact of the present invention comprises a rigid bottom B and a pouch body P secured thereto, said rigid bottom B comprising a disc-shaped piece, made of wood or a suitable cast or molded plastic, shaped or formed as a powder and powder-puff container and as a holder or back for an external mirror, and the said pouch body P comprising a cylindrical piece made of a flexible material such as a suitable fabric or leather and forming the container and closure for the compact.

The rigid disc-shaped bottom piece B made as aforesaid out of some non-metallic material such as wood or a suitable plastic (cellulosic or phenolic or other type), is molded or shaped so that it is formed on its interior wall l0 with a cavity ll defining a powder and powder-puff well, on its exterior wall I2 with a recess I 3 for receiving a mirror, and on its peripheral wall M with a circumferential groove l5 for receiving the bottom of the pouch body P. To provide these parts, the interior wall I0 is hollowed to form a substantially cylindrical Well cavity, the exterior wall I2 is recessed to a depth suitable for receiving a mirror and for forming a back therefor, and the peripheral wall I4 is suitably grooved to a depth sufficient for receiving and having secured therein the bottom edge of the flexible pouch P.

The flexible pouch body P comprises as aforesaid a cylindrical piece made of the suitable fabric material or of leather having a cylindrical body l6 provided at its upper end I l with the draw-strings l8 and having a bottom edge I9 which is secured in the peripheral groove I5 by being stufied into this groove in the manner best shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. This pouch body consists of an outer fabric piece 20 and an inner fabric lining 2| stitched together at the top as at 22 and folded at this line of stitching, the said outer fabric piece and the inner fabric lining being also stitched together by the lines of stitching 23 which define the channel for the draw-strings [8. These pieces may also be stitched at their bottoms as by a line of stitching 24 close to the bottom edge, which isstuffed into the peripheral groove of th rigid bottom piece B.

The powder and powder-puff well H is deep enough to receive a powder sifter 25 and to seat the powder-puff 26 (see Fig. 2!). Secured to the bottom of the recess l3 as by means of a suitable adhesive or the like, is the outwardly facing mirror 21. For receiving other vanity articles such as lipstick and the like, the inner lining 2| may be provided with the pockets 28, 28 formed by stitching a piece of fabric to the inner lining.

In the modification shown in Figs. 4 to 6 of the drawing, the bottom edge of the pouch body P, in addition to being stufied into the circumferential groove I5 of the bottom B, is secured thereto by a locking string. The pouch body P having its bottom finished as at 29 is stuffed into the groove l5 together with a cord 39 having its opposite ends knotted as at 3|, this cord being pushed, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, into the deepest part of the groove Iii. The cord forms a secure locking element and is itself firmly held in position because of the knotted ends 3|.

This compact may be made with a variety of materials and in a variety of colors to meet all of the tastes and needs of service. The fabric pouch bodies P may have their outer covers made of an attractive fabric such as silk or a flexible material such as leather, in any desired tint or shade and with suitable surface ornamentation. The rigid bottoms B, whether of wood or of plastic, may be made to match any tint or shade. The parts may be quickly fabricated and assembled. Highly attractive compacts, saleable at a low figure, are thereby produced. The compacts may be readily opened and closed by actuating the draw-strings. When open, access may be had to the compact container and to the various parts thereof as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. After being closed as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the pouch compact may be contracted and conveniently stored in a ladys handbag. The compact forms an efficient receptacle or container for the powder, the powder sifter and the powder-puff, as well as other articles such as lipstick and lipstick holders.

While I have shown my invention in the preferred forms, it will be obvious that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention defined in the following claims.

I claim:

1. A ladys compact comprising a rigid bottom and a pouch body, said rigid bottom comprising a disc-shaped piece hollowed on its interior wall 1 to define a powder and powder-puff well, recessed on its exterior wall to receive a mirror and mirror and grooved on its peripheral wall to rerecess, said pouch body comprising a cylindrical piece made of a flexible material having a drawstring at its top and having its bottom edge secured into the circumferential groove of said rigid bottom piece.

A ladys compact comprising a rigid bottom and a pouch body, said rigid bottom comprising a disc-shaped piece formed on its interior wall with a cavity defining a powder and powderpuff well, on its exterior wall with a recess for receiving a mirror and on its peripheral wall with a circumferential groove, a mirror secured in said recess, said pouch body comprising a cylindrical piece made of a flexible material having a drawstring at its top and having its bottom edge secured into the circumferential groove of said rigid bottom piece, said pouch body consisting of an outer fabric piece and an inner fabric lining stitched thereto, the said lining having pockets for receiving lipstick or the like.

A ladys compact comprising a rigid bottom and a pouch body, said rigid bottom com-- prising a disc-shaped piece formed on its interior wall with a cavity defining a powder and powderpuff well, on its exterior wall with a recess for receiving a mirror and on its peripheral wall with a circumferential groove, a mirror secured in said recess, said pouch body comprising a cylindrical piece made of a flexible material having a drawstring at its top and having its bottom edge stuffed and secured into the circumferential groove of said rigid bottom piece, and a cord stuffed into said groove and additionally securing the pouch bottom edge in said groove.
