Operation of the improved mechanism willbe clear from the foregoing description, but for clearness and definiteness'may be summarized as follows: The supply pad S of 're c'ord strips'having been loaded intothe supply compartment through the rear passageway of the casing, the forward end of the strip assembly is threaded around the rear surface of the guide orguide roller 32, the-guideplate 36 being moved rearwardly by opening the rear door [4, and the controlling pins 22 being retracted slightly by rearward pressure uponthe forward frame member or severing bar 23. The forward ends -ofthe strips are then led forwardly over the platenthe transfer sheets mounted upon the supporting blades 43 and interleaved in transfer relation with the record strips, while the forward ends 0f-the strips are threaded underthe resilient pressure bar 3| and through the strip passageway in the severing bar assembly. As the record strips are pulled forwardly to this position, a pair. of apertures .S thereof come. into alignment respectively Withthe controlling pins 22 which thus .enter the apertures under the influence of the spring 40 to position and align the strips in correct writing position upon the platenll; In this connection it will be noted. that the movement of the pins 22 in entering and leaving the strip apertures is a unitary movement :with the supporting carriage [8. -ment with the apertures S the record strips moves them forwardly to bring the next set of forms in writing position upon the platen. Near the end of 'this movement the next the supporting and controlling carriage I8,- the pins being positioned so as to enter or leave the apertures merely by moving the carriage. Due
to the incidence of the peripheral grooves32 of I the guide roller, the pins can penetrate and enter fully into controlling relation with the record stripsat the curvedpart ofthe path thereof adjacent to the guide roller. The control pins being positioned-at the turn of the. strip path, and at-the outer or convex sideof the turn,vonlylongitudinal movements thereof are necessary for strip engagement or disengagement. By means of this simple but effective arrangement the strips are accurately; and easily-controlled and aligned in correctwriting position upon the platen, while at the same time due to the simplicity of this mechanism very little space is required for its in- 'stallation, and consequently the portable register :can be made very small, light and compact and well adapted for easy handling and making of inscriptions;
. After a set of forms has-beeninscribed upon the platen I1, the'operator engages the severing bar assembly 23, which functions as an operating plate or handle, With a finger or thumb and pushes the controlling carriage 18 re'arwardly against the tension ofthe springs 40. This movement withdraws the control pins 22 from the strip apertures and at the same time retracts the sever- .-ing bar and operating plate 23 thus causing the forward end of the strip assembly to project beyond the bar 23 in position to be grasped by the fingers of-the operator. At the same moment that the bar 23 is moved rearwardly, the fingers grasp the protruding end of the strip assembly when the bar reaches its rearward position and the pins 22 are retracted from aperture engaging position. During this movement the resilient pressure bar 3! causes sufficient frictional pressure to' prevent any retraction of the'strip assembly that might interfere with theproiection thereof 'into grasping position at the outer side of the bar 23. When the bar 23 reaches therear- -Ward position the operator grasps the forward vend'of the assembly pulling it outwardly to the right, as viewed in Fig. 3, thusmoving the apertures S fromlalignment with the control pins 22.. In a device of the character described, in combination, a writing platen, strip guiding means to efiect a turn in the strips, a strip checking device positioned outside of said strip turn for engaging the strips substantially at said turn to check them in aligned position upon the platen upon predetermined movement thereof on said platen, a strip severing device positioned adjacent to the front end of said platen, anda' supporting carriage mounted for reciprocation longitudinally of said platen and mounting said checking device and said severing device for bodily movements in unison longitudinally of said platen and ,formoving said checking device to and from strip checking position. combination, a writing platen, a strip checking device positioned adjacent to the rear, end of said i platen and automatically engaging and checking the strips in aligned position'upon theplaten upon predetermined movement thereof on said platen,

In a device of the character described, in combination, a platen, acarriage mounted forlongitudinallreciprocation adjacent to said platen, strip positioning and strip severing devices mounted on said carriage for reciprocation therewith, a strip guide about which said strips .are turned adjacent to said strip positioning device, and said positioning device including a strip aperture engaging pin longitudinally displaceable with said carriage so as to be caused to enter and leave strip apertures at the turn of the strips by longitudinal reciprocation of said carriage.

combination, a platen for receiving ,strips, a caradage mounted "for longitudinal reciprocation -ad -r jacent to said platen and biased for movement into forwardly disposed operative position, an operating handle having a strip passageway and carried by said carriage at the forward part thereof and biased therewith into said operative position, said handle being movable rearwardly with said carriage upon engagement of the handle by the operator to cause the strips to project through said passageway at the forward side of the handle into position to be grasped, said handle having strip severing edges respectively positioned above and below said passageway, means forpreventing retraction of the strips during said rearward movement of said handle, means spaced rearwardly of the platen from said handle for causing "a turn in the strips, and a strip engaging strip controlling pin mounted'on said carriage substantially at the outside of said strip turn for unitary movement with said carriage to and from controlling engagement with the strip substantially at the outside of said strip turn.
