Description

H. H. OLSON Oct 5, 1943.
DEVICE FOR DETERMINING THE CONTENTS OF ROLLS OF OILCLOTH Filed Aug. 2, 1941 Inventor Hmmr H. OLSON Mtm'ntus lines.
Patented Oct. 5, 1943 t l Herbert H. Olson, LosAngeleaCaliL, assignor to Columbus Coated Fabrics Corporation, Columbus, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application August 2, 1941, Serial No. 405,216 t 4 Claims. (01. 33-128) The object of this invention is to provide a measuring device for rolls of textile material;
Heretofore in the art there have been many difficulties in determining the length of unwound textile material wound in the roll. One of the principal .difiiculties has been a means of easy and accurate reading of the contents of the roll without removing it from a shelf and without unwinding it.
Another object of this invention is to provide a readily readable, detachable measuring instrument for measuring the contents of a roll of textile material without unwinding it.
It is an object to provide such mechanism that can be readily mounted and demounted within the roll, that can be mounted on the roll the hand 'of the operator are placed around the roll of oilcloth'so that it'can be compressed and brought into a reasonably compact condition. The edges of the oilcloth are then measured as to the total diameter of the roll according to theirpdsition with respect to the'indicating line 5. This indicates the total yardage on the'roll.
while it is still in a rack or on a shelf and which i will give a ready and substantially accurate indication of the contents of the roll.
My invention is particularly adaptable for the measuring of such materials as oilcloth. It gives a ready means of taking inventory. It is a further object to provide a, combined transparent or translucent indicator and one that also reveals through the indicator disc the exact diameter of the roll.
It is an object to provide for the mounting of such indicator within the core upon which the oilcloth is wound without disturbing the winding of the oilcloth on the core.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective, partially broken away, showing the indicator about to be inserted in the core of a roll of oilcloth.
Figure 2 is a section of the line 2-2 of Figure 3 showing the position of the indicator when in its operative position with the hand of the operato permit the viewing of the oilcloth roll through.
the slot. The disc I is provided with a support 3 and the handle 4.' Adjacent the slots are calibrations or measuring marks Shaving yardage indicating numerals 6 opposite each one of the The support 3 is inserted within the core 1 carrying the roll of oilcloth 8. The fingers 9 of These lines have beenengravedupon the disc I as the result of the calibration of the disc.
It can. be readily appreciated that by this very simple means it is possible to rapidly take an inventory of roll products, such as textile materials; oilcloth and the like. This measurement can be taken with the rolls on a. shelf or in a rack without disturbing the roll, or unwinding it. The oilcloth is visibly observed at the end of the roll through the slots 2 and a ready and effective means of reading the measurements is directly in front of the eyes of the user of this measuring device. By having the disc I of transparent material the end of the roll can be readily observed so as to be sure that the hand 9 of the operator in compressing the roll for reading has not distorted it out of its cylindrical condition to give a false reading. The pressure of the hand is just positioned to keep the roll in tightly wound condition for an accurate reading without distorting it.
One of the important features of the invention is the ready means of inserting the support 3 for the indicator and the ready means of withdrawing it.
I desire to comprehend within my invention I such modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
It will be understood that any type of textile material such as oilcloth or other types of yardage may be measured by this instrument.
It is further understood that this disc I may i be made of any material, but I prefer to make it of transparent material, particularly of plastic of the thermosetting type, or of the thermoplastic type, or of other materials of similar nature. The cylinder 3 acting as the fork in the handle 4 may be molded as one piece of the disc or may be made of separate materials.
The exact configuration of the margin of the disc I is notimportant although I prefer to have the body I made in a disc-like formas it aids the eye in negating the diameter of the yardage being measured. c
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for measuring yardage of material wound on a core to form a roll comprising: positioning means insertable in the core of the roll;
measuring means attached on one end of .said
positioning means; and indicia on said measuring .means, said indicia being calibrated for drect reading of the yardage-of materal wound on the r011. v v
2. A device for measuring yardage of material comprising: positioning means insertable in the means having a surface shaped to conform closely with the interior of'saidtubularz'core;v disc or flange means attached on one end-ofsai'd: positioning means; and indicia on said disc or" flange means comprising calibrations for direct reading of the yardage of material wound on the roll said measuring means adapted to lie closelyv adjacentto the side of the roll when said positio'n-. m 'jm'ea'ns hasbeen inserted in said hollow tubu, la'rfcoresf 3.,As a new. article of manufacture, a device for measuring yardage of material wound on a. hollow tubular core to form a roll, comprising a single disk 01' ,flange hav ng-mama thereon:
comprising calibrationsiorjjdirectf readingof the 7 yardage of material wound on the roll, a cylin drical positioning means projecting centrally from one side of said flange and shaped to conform closely with the interior of said tubular core, a handle projecting from the other side of said-disk or flange rigidly in linewith said positioning, means, said disk. or flange adapted to lie closely adjacent to the side of the roll when said positioning means has been inserted in said hollow tubular: core. I
ALAS: a. new articleof manufacture for measuring yardage of material Wound on a hollow tubular core to fo-rma roll comprising a single disk. or: flange of transparent material having on i its tace indicia comprising calibrations for direotureadingof the yardage wound on the roll, a cylindrical positioning device extending centrally rigidly from one side ofsaid disk and shapedto fit the hollow tubular core of the roll, and a handle,extending; rigidly in. line with said positioning device from the opposite'fac'eflof thedisk, said disk adaptedto lie closely adjacent; to
the, side of; the roll when; its positioning device:
has been inserted in said hollow tubular core..
