(01. 246- 115) This invention relates to means whereby a trolley pole may be derailed in order to stop a trolley car and it is aimed to provide such a means as may be operable in synchronization with a trolley signal block system; through switch means directly operable by the trolley pole or manually. i v 1 In addition it is aimed to provide a derailing means adapted for suitable suspension and to the ends of which trolley wires are clamped and which means includes one or'more displaceable trolley arms normally alined with thetrolley wire.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment by way of example.

Referring specifically to the drawingswherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, the derailer consists ofa suitable metallic i supporting plate or body generally designated l0 having integral upstanding flange II at opposite ends thereof. Fastened' to the body I0 is a plate or b1ock.2!l of indurated fiber or other suitable insulation.- A switch arm 2|, primarily of insulation is pivotally mounted at 22 on the plate 2!] and at one end has a contact or conductor 23 thereon adapted for selective engagement with a pair ofcontacts 24 to "close an electric circuit through an electro-magnet or solenoid at 25 or with a pair of contacts 26 in order to close an electric circuit through an electro-magnet "or solenoid 21. It will be noted that the contacts 24 and 26 are fastened to the plate of insulation and that the solenoids and 21 are suitably mounted on the body Ill. Said solenoids 25 and 21, respectively have slidable armatures at 28 and 29 which through the medium ofa pin and slot connection at 30 and 3|, respectively, are connected to a lever 32 which is pivoted midway of its ends by a pin or stud 33 to the body l0.
The armature 28 is extended and has a link 34 screw-threaded thereto at 35, which at 36'is' pivoted to the switch arm or lever 2 I A pair of coacting clamping sections 31 and 38 are detachablylsecured'to each flange I by means of bolts or other fastenings 39. Conducting trolley wires at 40 have upwardly deflected ends 4| which are seated ingrooves 42 of the plates 3! and 38 and clamped in place between such plates. Sections 31 have'conductor portions 4| fixed and aligned with the conductors 40 to serve as extensions of the latter.
Normally aligned with the trolley Wires 40 and extensions 4| thereof are one or more conducting trolley arms 42 which are normally aligned therewith but adapted to be moved to and from the displaced or dotted line portion shown in Figure 3 through the action of the solenoids 25 and 21, which arms 42, when disaligned will derail the trolley pole engaged with the trolley through the medium of the usual wheel or slidable shoe. The arms 42 at one end are rounded and correspondingly fittedin concavities at 43 with the adjacent trolley pieces or extensions 4| and adjacent such ends,=screw-threaded studs rise from the arms and are journaled in suitable openings in the body If], being held in place on the body by washers 45 and nuts 46.
i In order that the arms 42 will swing on their pivots 44 through the action of the solenoids 25 and 21, the lever 32 has ears or lugs 41 extending on opposite sides thereof and through which extend lugs or studs 48 which rise from the arms '42, the lugs or studs 48 also passing through en- End mounted directly by the plate 50.
The trolley wheel or shoe can travel along the wires 40, extensions 4| and arms 42 in the usual manner when they are aligned. However, in order to derail the trolley wheel or shoe to stop the trolley car, electro-magnet 21 is energized so as to attract the armature 29, resulting inrshifting the lever 2| to engage contact '23 with those at 24 and shifting lever 32 so that the lugs 4'! will shift the arms 42 on the pivots M to the disaligned dotted lined position of Figure 3. Thereafter, arms 42 may be restored to normal position for further travel of the trolley car by energizing the electro-magnet 25 to attract its armatures 28 to return the parts to. the. normal '54 and a washer 51 on rod 52-, so that the adiacent lugs may displace the rod. in snapping. from one side thereof to theother.
Body I0 is grounded as at 58. A conductor .59 grounds solenoid 25' to the body Ill an'd'a conductor 641' leads from such solenoid to one of the contacts 24 while a conductor 6| leads from the other contact 24 to theend that when a circuit is closed through the conductor! so1en0id 25 is energized. The solenoid 21 isgrounded'to-the body l6 by a conductor 62' and aconductor 63 extends from that solenoid to one of the; contacts 26 while a conductor 64 extends from theother conductor 26 so that when a circuit is' closed therethrough and through ground the solenoid 21 will be energized. Both conductorsu6-| and. 64 may be connected toany single pole switch 66, the other wire 61 fromthe switch connecting to ground or the rails the car'runs'on. Said electric switch is actuated by themovement of the red arm 68 or the white arm on one. type signal or the position of the semaphore on. other type signals.
It will be understood that in connection with the invention; I may use any desired system or means to indicate whether'the derailer isopen or closed as by the automatic or'manua'l. energiza'tion and deenergization of green and red lights, respectively, or equivalent contrasting signals.
The form of derailer described is ad'aptedto be synchronized witha trolley signal block system. A signal in such a block-system isshown in Figure 5 at 65; I
It will be clear that the parts described may besuitably encased or. covered and to this end, a conventional casing or cover is suggested in suitable sections 66' and 6.1, the same beingremovable and fastened inplace in any desired manner. The invention is also applicable where a single track is used for a trolley and the latter travels in both directions as well as for a double track with the trolley or trolleys traveling in a single direction.
The modified form of Figures 8 to: 11 may be employed and the same construction of derailer is sed s in th p eced ng figu es but with a d fferent form of cover or casing. In this form of the invention, the same reference characters as in the previous forms have been used, as far as they apply. In this form of the invention, the plates 38 preferably have a pair of bearings 68 integral or rigid therewith in which a shaft 69 is rotatable and to which a rotor body 10 of insulation, is riveted or otherwise fastened as at H 'Dhe rotor body in the insulation thereof has a longitudinal groove or notch normally engaged by projections 12 on spring fingers or contacts T3, T4 and 15. The metallic contacts 13, M and 15 are fastened to insulated plate or bracket 16 bolted as at TI to the bearing 68. A contact or conductor of metal 18 is screwed at T9 to the periphery of the rotor 10 and the rotor 10 isadaptedt'o be rocked in engagement with the wheel. or slide on a trolley pole, in order to engage the contact 18 with the conductors 13, M- and' 15- whereby the parts described serve as a circuit maker and breaker. To this end, an actuating arm. is. pivoted at to the rotor and it has a lug 9| engageable with a lu 92 on the rotor. According to the-arrangement of the tracks and trolleys, a circuit closure accord ng to'Figures 9, 10 and 11 may be employed at one end only of the trolley derailer or one of them may'be'employed at each end of the trolley derailer, in which event, the actuator 80 would operate the reverse (:0 that disclosed in Figure 10, that is would be effective when engaged by a trolley wheel or shoe traveling from left toright and would be ineffective when the trolley wheel travels from right to left. Only one of the circuit breakersis required for double track single direction operation of a trolley and in such event the actuator 80'can be rigid with the rotor.
In the second form of the invention, a longer preferably one piece conventional type of cover or casing 96 my be employed in lieu of that. at 66-61.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention: I
1. Mechanism of the class described comprising a signaLand means to derail a trolley element automatically through actuation of the signal.
2. In combination with a trolley signal of a block system, means operable by the signal synchronized therewith to automatically derail. a trolley element with respect to a trolley means, through actuation of the signal.
' 3. A trolley derailer-of the class described havinga body, means thereon for alinement with a trolley to constitute a portion of the latter, and means operable to displace the first mentioned means to cause derailment of a trolley element.
4. A derailer of the class described comprising a body, meanst'o secure opposite ends of a trolley thereto, means on the body for alinement with the trolleys to form a section thereof, andmeans to displace the last mentioned means to cause derailmenli of a trolley element.

A derailer of the class described comprising a body adapted for connection thereto of the opposite ends of trolley wires, trolley arms pivoted to the body for normal alinement with the trolley wires, electro-magnets on the body, and mechanism operable by the magnets and connected to the trolley arms to move them, to and from alined positions.
9. A derailer of the class described comprising a body adapted for connection thereto of the opposite ends of trolley wires, trolley arms pivoted to the body for normal alinement with the trolley wires, electromagnets on the body, and mechanism operable by the magnets and connected to the trolley arms to move them to and from alined positions, and electric switch means controlled by said mechanism.
10. A derailer of the class described comprising a body adapted for connection thereto of the opposite ends of trolley wires, trolley arms pivoted to the body for normal alinement with the trolley wires, electro-magnets on the body, and mechanism operable by the magnets and connected to the trolley arms to move them to and from alined positions, ears, a lever of said mechanisms equipped with said ears on opposite sides thereof, said ears being inter-connected with said trolley arms.
11. A derailer of the class described comprising a body adapted for connection thereto of the opposite ends of trolley wires, trolley arms pivoted to the body for normal alinement with the trolley wires, electro-magnets n the body, and mechanism operable by the magnets and connected to the trolley arms to move them to and from alined positions, ears, a lever of said mech- 12. A derailer of the class described comprising a body adapted for connection thereto of the opposite ends of trolley wires, trolley arms pivoted to the body for normal alinement with the trolley wires, electro-magnets of the body, and mechanism operable by the magnets and con-- nected to the trolley arms to move them to and from alined positions, a circuit make and break device mounted on the body, contacts associated with said device to control the circuits through said electro-magnets, and means to operate said device by contact with a trolley member, said means comprising an actuator pivoted in place for free movement in one direction, and lug means between the actuator and circuit breaker to cause unitary movement in the opposite direction.
14. A derailer of the class described comprising a body adapted for connection thereto of the opposite ends of trolley wires, trolley wires pivoted to the body for normal alinement with the trolley wires, electro-magnets of the body, and mechanism operable by the magnets and connected to the trolley arms to move them to and from alined positions, a circuit make and break device mounted on the body,'contacts associated with said device to control the circuits through said electro-magnets, and means to operate said device by contact with a trolley member, said means comprising an actuator pivoted in place for free movement in one direction, and lug means between the actuator and circuit breaker to cause unitary movement in the opposite direction, said circuit maker being a rotor, the rotor having a contact thereon and a part of insulation provided with a groove, the first mentioned contact having portions normally engaged in said 55 groove.
