UNirEo STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. WHITMAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE WHIT- MAN AGRICULTURAL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CORN-SHELLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,053, dated October 5, 1880.
Application filed March 2,1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WVHrrMAN, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in OornShellers, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of cornshellers known as cyliuder-machines, and it consists in certain improvements in an attachment to the cover at the end where' the IO corn is delivered and an oblique flange over the cylinder at one side, as will be hereinafter fully described and definitely claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a sectional top view of the cover, showing my attachment thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional top view of the cylinder, showing the flange. Fig. 3 is an end view of the machine. Fig. 4: shows a form of cylinder-tooth which I prefer to use in my machine, although I may use any known form of tooth.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The hopper, frame, fan, and screen used are of the ordinary construction, and need not 2 5 therefore be described, except so far as may be necessary to illustrate my improvements.
Letter A, Fig. 1, represents the cover over the cylinder, and B an adjustable attachment secured to the cover or frame at the discharge end, as will be more fully hereinafter explained. I usually make this attachment of metal, and it may be either riveted, screwed, or hinged to the cover or frame. At the outer end thereof are two lugs, a at, having perforations to 3 5 receive pintlcs b b, (see Fig. 3,) to the tops of which are applied nuts for the purpose of ad justing the attachment B.
I prefer to make the part B with two trans verse bars and longitudinal bars of spring metal; but it is evident it maybe made solid of any suitable material and accomplish the same result without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Instead of the nuts, I sometimes use a cam 5 or other equivalent device for the purpose of adjustment.
Over the cylinder 0, Fig. 2, at one side, I
, provide a downwardly inclined flange, O, which is permanently attached to the frame of the machine, and is for the purpose of preventing choking and facilitating the free delivery of the cobs from the end of the machine.
In the class of machines having a wooden cylinder, or with a cylinder constructed partially of wood and provided with projecting pins or studs, there is a tendency for said pins or studs to be forced into the cylinder by the pressure and force of the corn in the operation of shelling. To obviate this difficulty I construct the pins D with a flange or projection, d. (See Fig. 4.) The pin I usually provide with one or more notches at its point to prevent its being thrown out by the velocity of the cylinder.
It will be understood that by the use of a 6 pin having this construction it will always I project the same'distance from the surface of the cylinder, the flange d preventing its being driven in and the notches or teeth preventing its being thrown out by centrifugal action.
The adjustable attachment to the cover or frame is for the purpose of retaining the unshelled corn in contact with the cylinder for a longer period than is usual, so thatthe corn may be shelled clean, even when in a tough or green condition, and at the same time prevents choking or breaking of the cobs. This result is accomplished by forcing the attachment down on the corn by means of the nuts or other equivalent devices.
I am aware that shellers have been constructed having an end aperture which is partially closed by a slide 5' but this device, having a square shoulder, is liable to choke the machine, and is not claimed as any part of 85 my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a corn-sheller, the combination, with 0 the shellingcylinder, of the cover provided with an adjustable yielding attachment, 13, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a corn-sheller, the combination, with the cylinder, of an inclined flange attached to 5 the frame at one side, at the discharge end, over the cylinder, substantially as described.
