`To illustrate a profeti-cd embodimentof my invention, I` have' shown" aJ .door lock` comprising from the former, as shown, for example, in Fig. l. To the lower portion 29 is pivoted a slotted element 30 having an elongated slot 3l sli-ghtly enlarged at its upper end, as shown at 32. The element .30 is pivoted to the strikeplate by a suitable fasteningelement33 adjacent its upper end, so that it may swing from the full-line position shown in Fig. to the dotted line position shown in that gure, or even to a further position, where it stands at right angles to the longitudinal dimension of .the strike plate. t may be noted that the element 35 will normally stand directly below the portion 28 of the strike plate or within the vertical outline .of this portion, so that the face of the element 35 is substantially ush with the element 28, as shown in Fig. 1;
The portion 28 of the strikeplate is provided with the usual latch opening 35 .to receive the bolt I3, while the lower portion of the plate is provided with arecess 35, which recess is relatively deep, vasshown in Fig. 1, and as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 opens outwardly through the inner edge of this portion of the strike plate for a reason to be hereinafterset forth., In the lock case is also provided a guard bolt 3l of more or less usual form, the guard bolt being adapted to be retracted by the strike plate when the door is closed against the action of the spring 38. lIhe sternr 39 of this bolt is provided at its rear end with a crosshead `lill which is adapted to engage the'forward end of a lever yIII pivoted at 42 in the lock case, and having a rearwardly extending tail portion 43 provided in its lower edge with a notch 44 adapted to receive, in the position shown in Fig. 1, the Vupper end 'of the crosshead I'I so as to dog the latch bolt in protracted position. A spring 45 normally urges thelever to its operative position shown in Fig. l, which it occupies when the. door is closed. However, when the door is open and the guard'bolt 31 no longer engages the strike plate, this bolt will be protracted by its spring 38 and the crosshead 40 on the bolt stem will engage the .forward end of the lever I-I and 4swing this lever about its pivot 42 against the action of the spring 45, and thus movethe tail 43 ofthe lever upwardly to disengage the crosshead I'I in the usual manner.
`As will be understood, itis necessary to provide some means to move this clogging Aelement to disengaging position when it is desired to open `the door, and for this purpose the lever 4I is provided with a depending portion 45 which will be engaged by the upper lug 24 on the yoke 25, and thus move the tail portion 43 of the lever to inoperative position so that the latch bolt may be knob-operated when the door is closed.
In the lower part of the lock case'is slidably mounted an auxiliary bolt or ajar hook bolt 5U, this ,member being guided in its reciprocatory movements by a slot formed therein at 5l and a -pin 52 carried by the lock case. The bolt has a rounded end portion 53 adapted to be protracted from the lock case, and in this portion isa latch member `54 pivoted at 55 and having lugs 56 and 51 at its iront and rear ends, respectively. It will be noted that the latchmember isoverweig'ht'ed at the forward or left-hand side of the pivot 55 so y that when. the bolt 5E] is retracted` the forward end of this latch will drop downwardly so that the lug 56 will stand substantially llushi'iwith the upper surface of the portion 53. However, when the bolt is protracted thelug 5l will engage the face plate 58 of the lock case and-swing the ylatch element tothe position shown in Fig. 7, wherein the lug 56 protrudes upwardly from the slot in the bolt in which it normally stands.
It may here be stated that the head 53 of the auxiliary bolt is adapted to be protracted through the slot 3l of the swinging element 30 into the recess 36 of the strike plate, and when this occurs the opening of the door will be limited by the length of the slot 3| and the upstanding lug 56 on the pivoted element 54 will preventthe member 30 being forced from the end of the bolt head turn or knob, for example. To this hub is secured a rollback l6I which is pivoted at V52 to a link 63, the other end of which link is pivoted at E4 to the bolt 50, the members 5I and B3 forming an operating toggle for this bolt. A tension spring `555 secured at its forward end to the bolt and at its other end to the case will normally urge the bolt 50 to retracted position, this movement being prevented by the alignment of the toggle pivots when the bolt is thrown, as shown in Fig. 2.

However, when the auX- iliary bolt is protracted, as shown in Fig. 2, the latch kbolt will be positively moved to retracted position and retained there against the action of its spring by the alignment of the toggle members 6I and 63. It is desired to arrange to throw the auxiliary bolt when the door is in closed position, and it of course may be retracted into the ease in any position of the door, whether open or closed. In order to throw the auxiliary bolt when the door is closed, an .arrangement must be provided for moving the clogging lever il to inoperative position, for the latch bolt is always retracted when the auxiliary bolt is thrown, and when the door is closed the retraction of the guard bolt 3'I permits the dogging lever 4I to assume an operative position. In order to effect this result, a slide is mounted for vertical movement in the latch case, in this case adjacent the slide 70', and is providedl with a' recess or"notch 8|? adjacent its upper end to receive the endporltionfof the tail between the arm B'and the slide BB1 in view of the Ifact-that' after the doggingleve'r 4| has been movedfto.v inoperative position itis necessary to `continue the motion of the hub 60 to complete theprotraction of the bolt 591 For thispurpose thehorizontally extending portion 82 of the slide 802 is provided with a recess 84 in` which the end ofithe arm 66:' rides after running orf'the shoulder' &3,. so that after the. arm disengagesthe shoulder `83, it merely ridesover the arcuate surface of' the` recess 84E Without causing anyadditional'upwardmovement of the slidei. From the foregoing it will bel apparentthat I have provided a doorlock having a latch bolt arranged to be dogged in its protracted position to prevent anyone forcing an entry to the room which is guarded by the lock. At the same time I have arranged in the lock case an auxiliary or ajar bolt, so connected with the latch bolt that the latter is retracted when the` auxiliary bolt is protracted, and at the same time the latchbolt-dogging element is moved to inoperative posi-tion to permit the retraction of the latch bolt. It will also be understood that when the auxiliary bolt is protracted and connected with the swinging element 3G, as shown for example in I Fig. 3, this bolt may be retracted in any position of the door, either by rotation of the hub 60 or by rotation of the knob hub 20, or by a key at the outside of the door acting on the slide 10.
` When this bolt is retracted the parts are restored to their normal positions, the latch bolt being released for protraction by its spring I6.
Near the end 43 of the lever 4l a lug 9i) is provided, Which lug is adapted to be engaged by a lug 9| on the lever I8 to move the dogging lever` 4l to inoperative position and permit key operation of the latch bolt by means of the lever I8.
While I have shown and described a preferred` embodiment of my invention, it Will be understood that it is not to be limited to all of the means to protract the latter, an element slidably` mounted in the case and actuated by said proi tracting means to move said clogging means to inoperative position, and a separate `element actuterconnecting said latch and auxiliary bolts to eiect retraction of.L the former when the latter is protracted, and means toprotract the auxiliary bolt and' free the latch bolt from the dogging means, said interconnecting means permitting free movement. of the latch bolt when. said auxiliary bolt isretracted. i

A door lock comprising a Case having a latch bolt therein adapted to cooperate With a strike plate, a guard bolt also cooperating with the strike plate, means controlled by the guard bolt to dog the latch bolt in protracted position when the door is closed, an auxiliary bolt, means to protract the latter, said protracting means com.-
'fprising a hub having an arm, a slide mounted in the case having a lost-motion connection with said arm, and said slide engaging said clogging means to move the latter to inoperative position. 7. A door lock comprising a case having a latch bolt therein adapted to cooperate with a` strike plate, a guard bolt also cooperating with the strike plate, means controlled by the guard bolt to dog the latch bolt in protracted position when the door is closed, an auxiliary bolt, means to protract the latter, means to effect retraction of the latch bolt upon protraction of the auxiliary bolt, and additional `means to actuate the latch bolt, said means also serving to retract the` bolt, and key-operated means to retract the auX- iliary bolt.
9. In a door holder, a case having a latch bolt and an V'auxiliary bolt reciprocably mounted therein, said `latch bolt being adapted to cooperate with a strike plate, an lelement movably mounted on the door jamb with which said auxiliary bolt cooperates to hold the door in partly open position, aguard bolt in the case cooperating with the strike plate, means controlled by the guard bolt to dog the latch bolt against movement when the door is closed, and means to'protract said auxiliary bolt and simultaneously f move said clogging means to inoperative position and retract the latch bolt.
10. In a door holder, a case having a latch bolt and an auxiliary bolt reciprocably mounted therein, said latch bolt being adaptedto cooperate with a strike plate, an element movably mounted on the door jamb with which said auxiliary bolt cooperates to hold the door in'partly open position, a guard bolt in the case cooperating with the strike plate, means controlled by the guard bolt to dog the latch bolt against movement when the door is closed, means to protract said auxiliary bolt and engage it with said element when the door is closed, and a connection 'between said protracting means and said clogging means to move the latter to inoperative position.

In a door holder, a case having a latch bolt and an auxiliary rbolt reciprocably mounted therein, said latch bolt being adapted to coopyerate with a strike plate, an element movably mounted on the` door jamb with which said aux'- iliary bolt cooperates to hold the door infpartly open position, a guard bolt in the case cooperating with the strike plate, means controlled by the lguard boltto dog the latch bolt against movement When the dooris closed, means to protract said'auxiliary bolt and engage it with said element when the door is closed, and a connection between said protracting means and said clogging means to move the latter to inoperative position, Said latch and auxiliary bolts being interconnected whereby the former is retracted when the latter is protracted. l

In a door holder, a case having a latch bolt and an auxiliary bolt reciprocably mounted therein, saidlatch bolt being adapted to cooperate with a strike plate, an element movably mounted on the door jamb with which said auxiliary bolt cooperates to hold the door in partly open position, a guard bolt in the case cooperating with the strike plate, means controlled by the guard bolt to dog the latch bolt against movement when the door is closed, means to protract said auxiliary bolt and engage it with said element when the door is closed, a connection between said protracting' means and said dogging means' to move the latter to inoperative position, said latch and auxiliary bolts being interconnected whereby the former is retracted when the latter is protracted, and knob-operated means to retract both said bolts.
