(01. corpse) This invention relates to containers, and more particularly to light and economical containers for the shipping, storing, and dispensing of rolls of tape.

In the handlingshippingand storing of rolls of tape, and particularly tape such as masking tape, decorative tinsel, and the like, which may or may not be provided with an adhesive backing, it is desirableto provide a light and simple container which permits ready access to the con-,

tents and yet provides a maximum amount of protection against injury to the outerv layers of tape in case the container should be dropped or struck.

To this end, it has heretofore been proposed to provide a container having a roll-centering device adapted to be inserted in the usual large central opening in a roll of tape and retain said roll in spaced relationship with respect to the peripheral confines of the container. This manner of supporting rolls of tape prevents pressure upon or contact with the periphery of the rolLand prevents distortion or mutilation of the tape.

However, roll-centering cartons'of the character above described are expensive'and difiicult to manufactur and ordinarily require a large number of complicated gluing and assembling operations which increase their cost in time and labor, and materially reduce thefeasibility of.

the use of such cartons. Furthermore, the constructions heretofore proposed frequently require thesecuring together of several separate parts into a single unit with the manifold gluing and sealing operations thus entailed.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a simple, economical, and efiicient roll-centering carton of the character set forth, wherein the necessary folding, securing, and sealing operations are reduced to a minimum and a satisfactory roll-centering enclosure is provided. H

Another object of the present invention is to provide a simple, compact, roll-centering carton formed from a single blank requiringa single gluing operation for its assembly and including a simple andv improved means for centering the roll oftape with respect to. the, side ,walls of the carton.

. It is also an object of this invention to provide a carton which may be stored or'shipped fiat in. order to save space but which, when required for use, may readily be manipulated into roll-loading position.

- Still another object oft-he present invention is to provide a container construction which aifords a maximum amount of protection to its contents both from physical blows and damage, and from dust and air-borne germs. I

An additional objector the invention is to provide a single piece container blank whereby, with a single gluing operation, there is provided a roll-centering carton which may readily be folded and assembled in roll-carrying position.

Another feature of the present device is its utility as a combination shipping, storing and tape dispensing device, and it will be noted that the roll may be left in place on the central hub and portions removed from time to time as required for use. Access to the roll for dispensing purposes may be effected at either end of the carton merely by unfolding the desired end flap. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a convenientsingle piece tape dispensing carton of the character described.

Thus: it will be seerrwith the above embodiment that merely inserting. the end flap into position causes the slots automatically to engage and secure the hub in position and lock all of the parts in a manner best adapted to resist the strains which may be imposed upon the carton.

Having. thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

1 A cartoni or enclosing andcentrally supporting a roll of tape said carton comprising a single-blank of material of form-retaining characteristics having a base portion defining one side downwardly deformed to form a roll-centering hub to retain a roll against movement inany direction, and others: of said extensions being interengageable with the side edges of said tongue to structurally support the hub in position.

2. A roll-centering and enclosing carton comprising a base, a plurality of interlocking members extending from said base to form an enclosure, two of said members having end portions secured together and providing a roll-centering hub comprising an elongated strip of material formed and inwardly disposed so that the edges thereof form a rectangular hub spaced from the peripheral walls of said container, others of said members including securing means engaging said elongated strip to retain said' hub in place.

3. ma carton having peripheral walls, a hub extension for centrally supporting rolls in spaced relationship from the peripheral walls of the carton, said hub extension comprising a substantially U-shaped strip of carton material secured to one of the carton walls and positioned intermediate the walls, and end flap means on said carton adapted to cooperate with said hub extension to retain said hub extension in a central position.

4. A one-piece blank for forming a shipping carton having a central hub portion, said blank comprising a base section forming the bottom of the carton, extensions onieach side of saidi base section forming the side and end walls of the carton, said extensions including portions formed to interlock one with the other, one of said extensions having a tongue which may be secured to an opposed extension and displaced inwardly to form a roll centering hub, said hub being of substantially U-shape and being retained in place by others of said interlocking extensions to provide a centralhub in the assembled carton. l

5. A one-piece blank for forming a shipping carton having an annular interior space and a central hub portion, said blank comprising a base section having a cut-away central portion, tabs on opposed edges of said cut-away portion side wall extensions including portions forming the top of said carton, the ends of said extensions being formed to interlockand provide a rigid structure, said extensions also including an inwardly directed hub portion engageable by said tabs on said edges of the cut-away portion.

6. A carton blank for forming a shipping and storing carton to enclose and support a roll of tape having a central opening, said blank comprising a rectangular base section to form one wall of the carton, a plurality of outwardly directed sections extending from the edges of said base section to form peripheral side walls of the carton, an opposed pair of said side walls having extensions adapted to be folded inwardly and having an elongated tongue securing said extensions together to form a portion of the top wall of said carton, said extensions including a portion inwardly deformable to provide a roll center'- ing hub in said carton, another pair of said side walls having extensions forming end flaps for said carton, said flaps being formed to interlock with the central hub of said carton.

7. A shipping carton for the support of fragile rolls without contact with the periphery of the roll comprising a base portion forming the body of the carton, wall extending upwardly from the edges of the base portion, and a top for said carton formed from extensions on said walls, one of said extensions having an elongated tongue portion supported to form an inwardly directed roll-supporting hub.

8. A one-piece blank for forming a shipping carton with a central hub portion comprising a base section forming the bottom of the carton and having a central aperture, extensions on each side of said base section forming the side and end walls of the carton, additional extensions on said side walls formed to interlock one with the other, one of said additional extensions having a tongue scored to provide inwardly directed portions connected by an intermediate portion, and means for interlocking said intermediate portion with the edges of said aperture in said base section to provide a central hub member.

9. A shipping carton for the support of rolls having central inner openings, said carton comprising a base portion forming the body of the carton, walls extending upwardly from the edges of the base porti0n,and extensions on said walls ing inwardly extending portions secured together 7 t to also form an opposed side wall of said container, said side and edge walls forming an annulus into which a roll of tape may be inserted in edgewise relation, said annulus being of a size substantially larger than said roll of tape and said opposed side edge Walls having a portion deformable into the central opening of said roll of tape to form a rectangular hub and adapted when so deformed to draw the closure more closely about said roll of tape.
