ApplicationApril'zl, 1943, semi No.1483,847- I In Canada August 13,1942
ZCIaimS... (01. 304.333; The invention appertains, to improvements UNITED STATES PATENT devicesfor holding blades of safety razors so that they maybe conveniently stropped, and has for itslobjeot the provision of a'holder of a simple 7 and practical construction in which a razor blade] of the double-edge type can be easily and quickly} removed after the cutting edge has inserted and been restore The distinctive featureof construction resides I in the attachment means'for the razor blade by which it is held firmly with an edge exposed for contact with anordinary strop. a
The inventionvcomprehends a handled holder having a flat elongated member'against which a' razorblade is clamped in place by a keeper plate." The blade is placed over alooating ridge which upstands from said member andfits into an aper-' ture in the keeper plate. .The keeper plateis loosely attached and arranged tobe. swungupwardly endwise from said member ior insertion; of a blade, and its removal aftersharpeningr The attachment means provides a bent tonguefitted' in a slot, the arrangement being such that end- I wise pressure on the keeper plate causes it to securely clamp a blade against said member,
which carries means for exerting the necessary endwise pressure in'the form 'of a locking device. In one embodiment of the invention the 'locking device comprises a screw collar having a flared mouth for engaging a tapered end of the keeper plate. In another embodiment, the looking device comprises a split collar having a plain bore which is a press fit on a section of a handle. The collar is urged along the said section by hand pressure and is irictionally retained in place. The collar has a flared mouth for engaging the tapered end of the keeper plate. In yet another variant form the locking device consists of a cam finger engageable with a biased face on the keeper plate. 7 a The invention is inexpensive to manufacture and may beemployed advantageously for restoring the edge of a razor blade. 1
Referring to the accompanying drawing,
,Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the preferred 7 form of the invention depicting place.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on Fig. 1.
a blade held in line 2-2 of Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the keeper plate.
and the screw collar removed.
lustrating 'more particularly the cam -finger and showing theibiased face on the keeper plate.
Fig. 9 is "a View similar 'toliig. 5, but showing? the modification of the invention in which a split collar secures'the keeper plate on the holder.
.Fig. 10 is .an sembled. f g I Like mumera'ls of reference denote similar parts in:each figure of the drawing. 1' "Referring at first to Figs. 1 td 6 inclusivejI preferably construct the'holderfp'roper of an elongatedfiat member ii) having an integral continuation at one end in'the form of ahandlel l At the end opposite the'handle I Provideaslot" I2 running lengthwise suitable for receiving a tongue l3 projecting from an end'of the keeper plate, denoted at 14, which is also a flat element similar to the member ii] anddisposedthereover so that a razor blade may be located therebetween with an edgeportion laterally'protruding therefrom I for engagement with' an ordinary strep. Both'th'e, member It! and the keeper plate are tapered towardtheirside edges from "which the TV razorblade i5 protrudes,;as'will-be seen from an inspection of Fig. 2, which allows the strap to properly contact the edge of the blade to be sharpened.
' For the purposes of positioning therazor blade, I
on the member 15 to fit in the slot customarily supplied in a blade.
I furnish a ridge or tongue: !6
A suitable aperture ll-is formed plate to accommodate the ridge l5. r I deform the tongue l3 downwardly and outin the keeper the slot 12 to permit the keeper plate to lie parallel with the member applied on the inner end I8 thereof.
the handle H with the member Hl'there is-sup' plied a sorew-threaded shank l9 which carries,
the screw collar 20.
end of the keeper plate when sorewed'toward the -same.
the holder ready for resharpening it is only:
Fig.1 6 shows the holder with the keeper plate" end view of the split coIlardisas wardly on a curvature such that it will fit into wand to cause'it to be urged toward the member I0 when pressure is q 'The end 1 I8 is tapered or rounded, and at the junctureof V The screw collar has a flared" l mouth 2| adapted to fitoverthe adjacent tapered necessary to raise the tapered end of the keeper plate, while it is clear of the collar 20, insert the blade over the ridge l6, and then allow the keeper plate to drop back into place again and tighten the collar. An importantfeature is that the flared mouth of the collar cooperates with the tongue l3 in urging it endwise to force the keeper plate into clamping engagement with the interposed razor blade, and at'the sametime firmly lock the tapered end of the keeper plate to preclude its shifting out of alignment. The
blade is reversed for sharpening its other edge;- Adverting to the variantiorm of the looking device depicted in Figs. '7 and" 8,' this]cm'-' prises the cam finger 22 which is in the form section29 to provide a frictional grip. Beyond it will be obvious that such variations in detail of an eccentric pivoted at 23 at the inner end. of the member l0 and supplied with a; finger piece 24 by which it may be turned. The cam finger is disposed in a. slot and arranged perpendicularly to the plane of the member ID. The inner end of the keeper plate hasflai notch 2-5 providing an inclined face 26'. The riotch accommodate the eccentric when the finger piece is. pushed toward the keeper plate ,to engage the inclined face 26'. The engagement co ac'ts with the tongue l3 in clamping thekeeper plate." On release of the cam finger the keeper plate can be swung upon its tongue-and-sl'ot connection. Since the operation of'the keeper'plate is" similar to the preferred form of 'the invention;,.no further description :is thought to ,be necessary. I v The modification of the locking device shown in Figs. 9 and 10 is similar to that already described in refer nce lto Figs. 1' to 6} However in lieu of screwing the collar onvthe holder it is made a friction fit so that itmay be slid intoa locking position with respect to thetapered end TB of the keeper plate. The ca rn,
denoted at ceptive to said end [8 of 'the keeper plate so that when it is urged into engagement with this.
end. it will exert a wedging eifect thereon and atthe same time cause the tongue l3 to firmly engage the slot 12.1, The collar is split as at 28, to enable it to "expand, and has a section provided with a smooth bore; The handle it has a. round, smooth shank section 38 immedi-- ately adjacent the member l0 and of a sli htly greater diameter than the bore of the collar may be resorted to as come within the scope of the appended claims. ..What I claim is:
1. A holder of the class described compris- 1 ang 'aj'h andle'd member of a fiat elongated shape having an intermediate extent upon which a razor blade is positionally located for stropping, and provided at its outer end with a slot running lengthwise; a keeper plate adapted to overlie ,s'ai'd razor" blade and" extend lengthwise be y'on'dthe' same, a tongue projecting downwardly and outwardly fro'rn'the' out'er eiid'of thekeep or plate on'a curvature and engaged in saidslot; so that when it'is urged into the slot it will cause'the keep'e'rplate' tdcl'amp the interposed razor blade, and a cam finger pivotally carried by'the innerrend of theaforesaid member'and having an eccentric portion engage Bible with a biased face rovidedon. the inner end of said keeper plate; said finger coacting with the tongue and slot in applying clamping pressure upon thekeep'e'r'plate.
