My invention relates in general to timin mechanism and has more particular reference to a timer for the control of electrical equipment in accordance with time periods determined by electrical impulses, such as sixty cycle alternating current, which occur at a predetermined frequency.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a timer mechanism adapted to maintain an electrical circuit during a precis time period determined by a selected number of impulses in a fluctuating monitoring wave; a further object being to provide apparatus of the character mentioned which, because of its ability to effect precise'time control in terms of a selected number of impulses in a fluctuating wave series, is peculiarly adapted for use in controlling the operation of X-ray equipment.
Another important object is to provide control apparatus which performs a time control function in terms of a desired number of impulses of electrical energy comprising a wave fluctuating preferably at constant frequency, the apparatus being conditionable for operation in response to any selected number of impulses within the range of the device.
Another important object is to provide an impulse timer of the character mentioned, including circuit making and breaking means, a motor for actuating the circuit making and breaking means at a predetermined speed under the control of a monitoring wave of electrical energy, which fluctuates or alternates at a predetermined frequency, together with selectively operable mechanism for adjusting the apparatus whereby to actuate the circuit making and breaking means at precise instants during the course of the monitoring wave.
Another important object is to provid apparatus, including a pair of switches and a synchronous motor for closing one switch-and thereafter opening the other after the elapse of a time interval determined by the occurrence of a pre determined number of impulses of a fluctuating monitoring wave of electrical energy, including selectively operable conditioning means to determine the number of impulses which occur between the closing of one switch and the opening of the other; a further object being to utilize a continuously operating motor, in combination with novel means for connecting the motor with means for actuating the switches at the beginning of the operating cycle of the control mechanism and breaking the driving connection between the motor and the switch actuating means at the conclusion of the operating cycle of the mechanism;
a further object being to provide separate actuating devices for each switch and to provide for adjusting the spacement between the switch actuating devices as a function of the frequency of the monitoring wave in order to constitute the de vice as a selectively conditionable time control mechanism.
Another important object is to arrange the switch actuating devices in a support frame for adjustable angular displacement about a common axis or center and to utilize rotating means adapted for driving connection with a synchronous motor for the purpose of successively operating the switch actuating devices.
Another important object is to mount one of the switches in fixed position on the frame and to support the other switch on a movable yoke for angular adjustment with respect to the fixed switch; a further object being to utilize turnable cam means having a switch actuating projection or finger which, when th cam is turned by the motor, will successively actuate the angularly displaced switches; a further object being to pro vide means whereby the cam will be yieldingly held in stand-by position having a fixed angular relationship with respect to the position of the fixed switch so that, when connected to the motor, it will actuate the fixed switch at a predetermined time interval following the establishment of the driving connection between the cam and the motor.
Another important object is to utilize a dog clutch for connecting the motor with the cam so that the connection may be made positively and without slipping at the beginning of the operating cycle of the switch actuating mechanism, a further object being to utilize, as a clutch, toothed driving wheel or clutch member having a number of teeth selected in accordance with the number of fluctuations of the monitoring wave which occur during one revolution of the clutch member whereby the apparatus may be adjusted to actuate the switches at predetermined corresponding or like points, such as zero energy points. in the fluctuating monitor wave.
Another important object resides in utilizing a non-symmetrical heart cam and a preferably spring biased follower for the purpose of orienting the switch actuating cam to its stand-by position.
Another important object is to utilize a synchronous motor for driving the switch actuating mechanism from stand-by position through an operating cycle; a further object being to mount the motor for angular adjustment with respect to the fixed switch in order that the apparatus operating cycle of the device at a predetermined point, such as a zero point, in the monitoring wave, to thereby minimize arcing at the contacts of the adjustable switch. v
Another important object resides in providing improved switch means, including automatic mechanism for resetting the switches upon the conclusion of an operating cycle so that in standby position, one switch, namely, the fixed switch, will be open and the other, or shiftable switch, will be closed when the apparatus is in stand-by position ready to perform a timing cycle,
Another important object is to provide improved switch mechanism comprising a co-operating pair of contact members, each of which may be adjusted to provide fresh contact surfaces from time to time without requiring replacement; a further object being to form one of the co-operating switch members as a cylinder which may be turned and anchored in place to present successive cylinder surfaces in position to contact with the co-operating switch member and thus.
allow the contacting surface of the cylindrical switch member to beperiodically renewed; a further object being to form one of the switch members as a bar supported in a suitable mounting so that both sides of the bar at both ends thereof may be utilized to afford four successively usable switch contact surfaces.
Another important object resides in providing a readily operable selector member, whereby accurately to adjust the spacement of the movable switch with respect to the fixed switch; a further object being to utilize an index panel and a manually movable member adjustable on said panel and drivingly connected with the yoke on which the shiftable switch is carried; a still further object being to provide a marked index plate fastened on the manually movable member in position to co-operate with a gauge mark on the index panel, whereby the setting of the mechanism may be visually indicated always at one place opposite the gauge mark.
These and numerous other important objects, advantages and inherent functions of the invention will become apparent as the invention is more fully understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment of the invention.

To illustrate my invention, 1 have shown on the drawings timing apparatus comprising a pair of relatively shiftable switches II and I5 supported in a main frame l1 having a generally cylindrical skeletal portion 19 carrying the switches and a rearwardly extending bracket portion 2| on which is mounted a motor'23, a solenoid 25, and a connection panel 21.
An index plate 29 is secured on the front of the skeletal frame portion i9 and serves to sup port manually operable indexing means whereby the apparatus may be adjusted or selectively conditioned for operation during a desired time interval.
In the illustrated embodiment, the switch I l is a normally open switch and the switch 15 a normally closed switch adapted to be successively actuated by switch actuating means 33 driven at synchronous speed by the motor 23 in order to close the switch II and then open the switch 15 after an elapsed interval of time determined by theadjusted spacement of the switches and the synchronous speed of the motor 23 which, of course, in turn, is determined by,the frequency of the fluctuating current wave which drives it. The switches H and 15 are electrically connected together in series in a circuit to be controlled so that in stand-by position the circuit is open at the switch ll. During the operating cycle of the apparatus, the switch II is first closed, whereby the circuit being controlled is closed and thus energized, thecontrolled circuit being opened at the switch l5 and thus de-energized at the conclusion of the operating cycle of the timing device.
While the invention is not necessarily limited to the form of switches employed, I have shown switches particularly well suited to perform the desired circuit controlling function, said switches II and I5 each preferably comprising a frame or base 35 of non-conducting material carrying a preferably cylindrical contact member 31 which is secured to said base as by means of a bolt 39. The base 35 is supported on a sub-frame 4| which includes a pivot pin 43 extending adjacent the base 35 and on which pin is pivotally secured a rockable switch member 45 which is preferably formed of non-conducting material and which carries a switch blade 41 in position to make and break contact with the member 31. The switch blade 41 preferably comprises a bar of conducting material, one end of which extends in a seat 49a formed in the member 45, the other end of the switch blade 41 projecting from the member 45 in position to make contact with the member 31. The member 41 is' supported yieldingly in the seat 49a on a bolt 52 having spring means 54 associated therewith, whereby the blade 41 is yieldably supported on the member 45. It will be noted that the switch blade 41, being rectangular, may be inverted in place on the member 45 to present either end in position for engagement with the contact member 31, and also the switch blade 41 may be mounted with either face in position to form a switch contact surface with the member 31. As a face of the member 41 deteriorates in service, it may be renewed several times merely by inverting the member 41 on the carrier member 45. Likewise, as the active surface of the member 31 deteriorates in service, it may be renewed merely by loosening the bolt 39 and turning the member 31 in place.
The sub-frame 4| of the switch II is secured on a seat 49 formed on the frame portion I9 whereby to locate the switch II in the assembly. The sub-frame 4| carrying the switch I5, however, comprises an integral part of a yoke 5| having a pair of arms formed with bearings 53 and 55 whereby the same and the switch I5 carried thereon is turnably mounted within the frame portion I9.
To this end, the bearing 55 carries an integral stub shaft 51 extending axially thereof and projecting outwardly of the yoke 5| and being journaled in the plate 29 and extending outwardly thereof. The projecting end of the shaft 51 carries the indexing means 3| which comprises a frame or yoke 6| fixed thereon, said yoke comprising an arm carrying a spring pressed pin 63- in position to sweep circularly across the face of the plate 29 and formed at one end with a detent selectively engageable in any one of a plurality of openings 65 formed in the plate 29 for locking the arm and the yoke 5| to which it is attached in any desired relative angular adjustment determined by the selected opening in which the pin 63 may be engaged. The pin 63 has a manually operable control handle 61 to disengage the pin to release the yoke 6| for turnable adjustment. The yoke 6| carries a disk 69 formed peripherally with an index scale 1| which, in co-operation with an index mark 13 on the plate 29 outwardly of the edge of the disk 69, indicates the adjusted position of the yoke 6| and the yoke 5| throughout the operating range of the device, which is determined by the number of openings 65 in the panel 29. It will be noted that the disk 69 has a perforation to receive the stub shaft 51 and a perforation for receiving the stem 63 so that the disk 69 at all times is fast on the yoke 6|, and it may be otherwise secured on the frame by suitable fastening members if desired. The central portions of the. disk 69 and also the yoke 6| may, if desired, be enclosed by means of a cover 15 which is held in place by a fastening screw 11 centrally of the cover and which has threaded connection in the end of the stub shaft 51.
By operating the handle 61 to release the pin 63 from the plate 29, the indexing means comprising the frame 6| may turn to shift the yoke 5| and the switch I5 thereon to any desired adjusted position indicated by the scale 1| and index mark 13 and locked in place by releasing the handle 61.
The switch actuating means 33 is driven by the motor 23 which has a shaft 19 formed with a driving pinion 8| which extends within the frame portion I9 in position to drivingly engage a gear 83 which is fast on a shaft 85.
Within the frame portion I9, the pinion 8| and gear 83 are enclosed in a chamber 89 defined by an inwardly extending rim 81, formed on the end wall of the frame portion I9, and a cover 9|. The shaft 85 is supported at one end in a bearing 93 formed in the end wall of the frame portion I9 and at the other in the bearing 55. The shaft is normally urged, as by means of a spring The yoke bearing 55 is journaled on and sup' ported by the shaft which carries a switch resetting flange collar 99 fast on the shaft. The shaft also carries fast thereon a driving gear IOI, preferably in the form of a toothed clutch disk, which is supported on a sleeve I03 which is fast on the shaft and which, at one end, forms an abutment for the spring 95, there being roller bearing means I05 interposed between the end of the sleeve I03 and one end of the spring 95, the other end of which bears upon the bottom of acavity formed in the yoke bearing 55. Journaled on the shaft 85 between the driving ge'ar I0| and the resetting collar 99 is a switch tripping disk I01 formed with a peripheral switch tripping projection or finger I09 and a slot III defined by a pair of radial wings II3. Loosely journaled on the sleeve I93 is a cam member |I5 comprising an asymmetrical heart shaped disk supported on a collar II1 which is journaled on the sleeve I03. The disk is fitted with a pin I|9 which extends outwardly of the toothed clutch disk IOI and is slidingly received in the slot III between the wings I I3 on the disk I01 to drivingly interconnect the cam 5 with the switch tripping disk I01. The cam disk 5 is also fitted with a finger I2I in position to drivingly engage the ratchet teeth of the gear IIII when the same, which is fast on the shaft 85, is thrust toward the disk I I 5 by the action of the solenoid. The shaft 85 and the sleeves I03 and H1 extend within a support plate I23 which is mounted on pedestals I25 formed on the inner face of the plate 29, said plate I23 having a central opening in which the sleeve H1 is journaled in a fashion preventing relative axial movement of the sleeve I I1 and the cam disk 5 carried thereby. The plate I23 also carries a lever I21 pivoted as at I29 near the margin of the plate, said lever having a roller I3I in position to engage the periphery of the asymmetrical heart shaped cam disk II5. Spring means I33 anchored at one end on a pin I35 near the edge of the plate I23, and fastened at its other end to the lever I21, is provided for normally and yieldably urging the roller |3| onto the disk whereby at all times to tend to rotate the disk to stand-by position illustrated in Figure3 of the drawings and thus position the driving finger I2| and the switch tripping projection I09 in predetermined relative angular positions with respect to the axis of rotation of the disk II 5, since the switch tripping disk I01 is drivingly connected therewith. It will be noted that through the foregoing expedient, the switch tripping projection |09 will always occupy the same starting position. The clutch disk or driving gear IOI preferably has a number of teeth selected in accordance with the number of fluctuations of the monitoring wave which elapse during one revolution of the gear so that, by adjusting the angularity of the motor in its support, the apparatus may be adjusted to open and close the switches always at the zero point of the monitoring wave; and in this connection, it maybe noted that the successful operation of the device is not dependent upon the maintenance of the frequency of the monitoring wave at an absolutely constant value. On the contrary, the timer is particularly adapted to perform regardless of frequency variations, the switches being closed and opened during time intervals determined as a function of the number of fluctuations of the monitoring wave elapsing during the switch closing and opening instants. The time intervals involved thus need not necessarily be constant functions of time, although they are constant functions of the frequency of the monitoring wave, which may vary, and may be constant functions of time where the frequency of the monitoring wave is maintained constant.
The switch members 45 both have actuating projections I31 comprising stems secured in the members 45 and extending radially inwardly in position to co-operate with the resetting collar 99 on the shaft 85. During the operation of the device, the solenoid 25 is actuated to project the shaft 85, the resetting collar 99, the switch tripping disk I01, and the driving gear IOI forwardly in the frame portion 99 into position such that the gear IOI drivingly engages the finger I2I on the cam member I I5. When in such driving position, the resetting collar 99 is released from the switch resetting projections I31. Since the shaft 85 is in constant rotation, being driven by the motor 23 through the pinion 8| and gear 83, the driving connection established by engagement of the gear IOI with the finger I2I instantly starts the cam I I in rotation at a rate of speed determined by the operating speed of the motor 23. Since the switch tripping disk I01 is drivingly connected with the cam I I5, it also will be rotated in shifted position. It will be noted that when the disk I01 is in shifted position,'its edge turns opposite the switch actuating members I39 which will be forced .radially outwardly at the instant when the tripping projection I09 on the disk I01 successively passes the members I39 during rotation of the disk I01. Since the tripping finger I09 always starts from a relative position determined by the cam H5 and its follower I3I, the normally open switch II will be closed by the engagement of the finger I09 with the actuating member I 39 of said switch II after an interval required to move the finger I09 into engagement with the bolt I39 following actuation of the Solenoid 25. Since the motor 23 operates at synchronous speed, this interval will always be equal to the time required for a constant number of fluctuations of the monitoring wave. By arranging the openings 65 in proper spacement in the plate 29, in accordance with the synchronous speed of the motor 23, it will be-seen that the switch I5, or rather its actuating member I39,
may be adjusted to any position representing a predetermined time interval in terms of fluctuations of the monitoring wave which controls the synchronous speed of the motor 23. The switch I5 thus may be arranged in adjusted position to allow for the el pse of any predetermined number of fluctuati ns of the monitoring current between the closure of the switch II and the opening of the switch I5 when its member I39 is thrown by the actuating finger I09.
The actuating finger I39 of each switch comprises a stem I4I axially shiftable in the subframe M, the stem being provided with a roller at one end in position to engage the finger I09 and being pivotally connected at the other end, as at I43, with a switch releasing latch lever I45 frame 4|.

The pivot remote end of the latch lever I45 is provided with a pair of shoulders I5I and I53 providing successively acting catches, the shoulder I5I serving to hold the switch member 45 in reset position, reset position, in the case of switch II being open position and in the case of the switch I5 being closed position. To this end, the member '45 of each switch has means I55 forming a seat carrying a detent finger I51 and a spring anchorage neck I59, the finger I51 preferably comprising a strip of sheet metal extending in position to engage the shoulder I5I of the latch I45. The spring anchorage neck I59 of the switch I5 is connected to one end of a spring IBI, the other end of which is adjustably anchored on a bracket I63 secured on the yoke 5I, the neck and spring being arranged to urge the switch member 45 in a direction normally urging the switch I5 toward open position, the latch I45 serving to hold the switch closed against the infiuence of the spring IBI. The spring anchorage neck I59 of the switch II is fastened to one end of a spring I55, the other end of which is adjustably secured on the frame I1, the neck and spring being arranged so that the spring normally urges the switch member 45 toward closed position, the latch I45 in the switch II serving to hold the switch open against the influence of the spring I65.
The action of the resetting collar 99 under the influence of the spring 95 is to press the switch fingers I31 in a direction to reset the switches, the switch II to open position and the switch I5 to closed position, against the influence of the springs I6I and I65. When reset, the switches are held in cocked position by the engagement of the detent fingers I51 with the latch I45, which are held in latching position by the springs I49. When the shaft is projected by actuation of the solenoid 25, the collar 99 will release the fingers I31 which, however, will remain in switch cocked position, since the members 45 carrying the same ,will be latched as aforesaid. 'As the switches are successively tripped by the engagement of the finger I09 successively with the members I31 of the switches, outward movement of the stems I4I against the influence of the springs I49 will successively release the latched members I51 and permit the switch I I first to close under the influence of the spring I65 and thereafter permit the switch I5 to open under the influence of the spring IBI, The latch portions I53, however, limit the opening and closing movements of thg switches I I and I5 so that when the shaft 85 is shifted rearwardly by the spring at the conclusion of the operating cycle of the device, thus releasing the driving connection between the finger I2I and the gear IOI, the action of the resetting collar 99 on the fingers I31 will be to return the switch members 45 of the switches II and I5, respectively, to switch open and switch closed position with the detents I51 engaged in the latch portions I5 I In order that the switches II and I5, respectively, may close and open at zero points in the monitoring wave, it is desirable to provide for adjusting the angularity of the motor 23 on the Y frame extension 2 I. To this end, the motor frame which has an end pivoted as at I41 on the sub 75 is provided with a groove I61, and the motor is secured on the frame by means of an annular clamp I69 having portions fitting in the groove I61.
Spring means I49 is provided to normally urge the stem I4I radially inwardly'in a A The motor thus may be turned in its clamp in order to calibrate it to the mechanism whereby to cause the switch I l to open atv a desired point, namely, a zero point in the monitoring wave, and the openings 65 in the plate 29 may be arranged in position causing the switch l to open at corresponding zero points in the monitoring wave.
The connection panel 21 may carry conventional terminals for the motor supply conductors and for the conductors controlling the solenoid 25.
My present invention is particularly well adapted for controlling X-ray equipment used in making X-ray pictures in which the exposure is a direct function of the number of pulsations of alternating current energy supplied to the X- ray generator rather than a function of time. Although the apparatus of my present invention is a timing device and does operate to control electric circuit in terms of elapsed time, because the control interval between the closure of switch II and the opening of switch I5 is determined by the speed of the synchronous motor 23, however, time control is actually accomplished in terms of the number of fluctuations of the monitoring impulse which, when the device is used with radiographic equipment, is the alternating current power supplied to the X-ray generator. By means of the device of my present invention, therefore, I am able to time X-ray exposures exactly in terms of X-ray impulses delivered by the generator. The apparatus is extremely compact, is rugged and is relatively simple in construction and operation. It affords simplicity of control and facility of operation.
It is thought that the invention and its numerous attendant advantages will be fully understood from the foregoing description, and it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit 01' scope of the invention, or sacrificing any of its attendant advantages, the form herein disclosed being a preferred embodiment for the purpose of illustrating the invention.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. A timing device comprising a frame, a pair of biased switches supported in said frame, latch means to secure one switch in open and the other in closed position, and actuating means operable on said frame to actuate said latch means to release the open switch for closing movement under the influence of its bias and to release the closed switch for opening movement under the influence of its bias a predetermined interval after closure of the open switch.
2. A timing device comprising a frame, a pair of switches on said frame, said switches being biased one toward open and the other toward closed position, latch means to secure one switch in closed and the other in open position, each against the influence of its bias, and actuating means operable on said frame to actuate said latch means to release the open switch for closing movement under the influence of its bias and to release the closed switch for opening movement under the influence of its bias a predetermined interval after closure of the open switch.
3. A timing device comprising a frame, a pair of biased switches supported in said frame, control means normally retaining one switch in open and the other in closed position, each against the influence of its bias, said switches being adapted for connection in series to control a circuit, actuating means operable to close the normally open switch and then open the normally closed switch after a predetermined interval following closure of the normally open switch, and means to reset said switches, respectively, in normally open and normally closed position.
4. A timing device comprising a frame, a pair of biased switches supported in said frame, control means normally retaining one switch in open and the other in closed position, each against the influence of its bias, said control means comprising a control member for each switch, said switches and their associated control members being adjustably spaced apart and operable the one to release the normally open switch for closure under the influence of its bias and the other to release the normally closed switch for opening movement under the influence of its bias, and actuating means operable at substan tially constant speed to trip the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after tripping the control member of the normally open switch.
5. A timing device comprising a frame, a pair of biased switches supported in said frame, control means normally retaining one switch in open and the other in closed position, a control member for each switch, said switches and their associated control members being adjustably spaced apart along the arc of a circle and operable the one to release the normally open switch for closure under the influence of its bias and the other to release the normally closed switch for opening movement under the influence of its bias, and actuating means including a switch actuating member movable in a circular path and operable at substantially constant speed to trip the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after tripping the control member of the normally open switch.
6. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch supported in said frame, switch actuating means including an actuating member turnable on said frame in a circular path about an axis, each switch having an associated switch operating control member extending in the path of said actuating member, means to support one of said switches and its associated control member in said frame for movement about said axis to adjust the angular spacement of said switch control members about said axis, and means to secure the switches and associated control members in angularly adjusted position.
7. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch supported in said frame, switch actuating means including an actuating member turnable on said frame in a circular path about an axis, each switch having an associated switch operating control member extending in the path of said actuating member, one of said switches and its associated control member being fixed on said frame and means for supporting the other of said switches and its associated control member in said frame for movement about said axis to adjust the angular spacement of said switch control members about said axis, and means to secure the switches and associated control members in angularly adjusted position.
8. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch supported in said frame, switch actuating means including an actuating member turnable on said frame in a circular path about an axis, each switch having an associated switch operating control member extending in the path of said ment therewith about said axis to adjust the angular spacement of said switch control members about said axis, and cooperating latch means on the yoke and frame and operable to secure the yoke in any selected one of a number of angularly adjusted positions about said axis whereby to support the switches and associated control members in adjusted angularly spaced relationship.
9. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch supported in said frame, a control member for each switch, said switches and their associated control members being adjustably spaced apart in said frame, actuating means operable to cause closure of the normally open switch and thereafter to cause opening of the normally closed switch, said actuating means being operable at substantially constant speed to trip the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after tripping the control member of the normally open switch, means to secure said switches and associated control members adjustably in spaced position comprising index means on said frame, carrier means movable on said frame with respect to said index means and connected with one of said switches and its control member, co-operating latch means formed on the carrier and index means to latchingly secure the same in any selected one of a plurality of adjusted positions, and indicator means on said carrier and index means and comprising a scale on one and an indicating element on the other for showing the adjusted position of the parts.

A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch supported in said frame, a control member for each switch, said switches and their associated control members being adjustably spaced apart in saidframe, actuating means operable to cause closure of the normally open switch and thereafter to cause opening of the normally closed switch, said actuating means being operable at substantially constant speed to trip the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after tripping the control member of the normally open switch, means to secure said switches and associated control members adjustably in spaced position comprising index means on said frame, carrier means movable on said frame with respect to said index means and connected with one of said switches and its control member, co-operating latch means formed on the carrier and index means to latchingly secure the same in any selected one of a plurality of adjusted positions, a motor adapted to be driven under the control of a monitoring wave of electrical power fluctuating at a predetermined frequency, and means to drivingly connect the motor with said actuating means, said adjusted positions corresponding with time intervals between closure of one switch and opening of anotherin terms of the frequency of the monitoring wave.
11. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch supported in said frame, a control member for each switch, said switches and their associated con trol members being adjustably spaced apart in said frame, actuating means operable to cause closure of the normally open switch and thereafter to cause opening of the normally closed switch, said actuating means being operable at substantially constant speed to trip the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after tripping the control member of the normally open switch, means to secure s'aid switches and associated control members adjustably in spaced position comprising indexmeans on said frame, carrier means movable on said frame with respect to said index means and connected with one of said switches and its control member, co-operating latch means formed on the carrier and index means to latchingly secure the same in any selected one of a plurality of adjusted positions, a motor adapted to be driven under the control of a monitoring wave of electrical power fluctuating at a predetermined frequency, means to drivingly connect the motor with said actuating means, said adjusted positions corresponding with time intervals between closure of one switch and opening of another in terms of the frequency of the monitoring wave, and means to support and secure said motor in precisely angulated position on said frame whereby to cause actuation of said switches at desired instances during the progress of said monitoring wave.
12. A timing device comprising a frame, 9. normally open and a normally closed switch on said frame, a control member for each switch, means to support said switches and their associated control members in adjusted angularly spaced position in said frame, said control members being operable the one to cause closure of the normally open switch and the other to cause opening of the normally closed switch, actuating means supported in said frame including a switch actuating member movable in a circular path about a rotary axis and operable at substantially constant speed to actuate the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after actuating the control member of the normally open switch, said switch actuating member being normally stationary under standby conditions, ,a motor operable at a controlled speed, and means operable to drivingly connect said actuating member with said motor to start the timing device in operation and to disconnect the member from the motor at the conclusion of the operating cycle of the device.
13. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch on said frame, a control member for each switch, means to support said normally open switch and its associated control member in fixed position in said frame, means to support the normally closed switch and its associated control member adjustably for angular movement about an axis of rotation in said frame whereby said control members may be adjustably spaced apart along the arc of a circle centred at said axis, said control members being operable the one to cause closure of the normally open switch and the other to cause opening of the normally closed switch, actuating means supported in said frame including a switch actuating member movable in a circular path about said rotary axis and operable at substantially constant speed to actuate the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after actuating the control member of the normally open switch, said switch actuating member being normally 2,825,860 stationary under stand-by conditions, a motor operable at a controlled speed, means operable to drivingly connect said actuating member with said motor to start the timing device in operation and to disconnect the'member from the motor at the conclusion of the operating cycle of the device, and means co-operatively associated with said member and, when the same is disconnected from the motor, normally urging it to stand-by position having a predetermined angular relationship with respect to the switch control member of the normally open switch.
14. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch on said frame, a control member for each switch, means operable to drivingly connect the shaft with said member, and means to shift the shaft axially in one direction to operate the clutch.
16. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch on said frame, a control member for each switch, means to support said normally open switch and its associated control member in fixed position in said frame, means to support the normally closed to support said normally open switch and its associated control member in fixed position in said frame, means to support the normally closed switch and its associated control member adjustably for angular movement about an axis of rotation in said frame whereby said control members may be adjustably spaced apart along the arc of a circle centred at said axis, said control members being operable the one to cause closure of the normally open switch and the other to cause opening of the normally closed switch, actuating means supported in said frame including a switch actuating member movable in a circular path about said rotary axis and operable at substantially constant speed to actuate the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after actuating the control member of the normally open switch, said switch actuating member being normally stationary under stand-by conditions, a motor operable at a controlled speed, means operable to drivingly connect said actuating member with said motor to start the timing device in operation and to disconnect the member from the motor at the conclusion of the operating cycle of the device, and a heart cam and spring-pressed follower drivingly connected with said member whereby, when thesame is disconnected from the motor, to normally urge the member to standby position having a predetermined angular relationship with respect to the switch control member of the normally open switch. 15. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch on said frame, a control member for each switch, means to support said normally open switch and its associated control member in fixed position in said frame, means to support the normally closed switch and its associated control member adjustably for angular movement about an axis of rotation in said frame whereby said control members may be adjustably spaced apart along the arc of a circle centred at said axis, said control members being operable the one to cause closure of the normally open switch and the other to cause opening of the normally closed switch, actuating means supported in said frame including a switch actuating member movable in a circular path about said rotary axis and operable at substantially constant speed to actuate the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after actuating the control member of the normally open switch, said switch actuating member being normally stationary under stand-by conditions, a motor operable at a controlled speed, and means operable to drivingly connect said actuating member with saidmotor to start thetiming device in operation comprising a shaft drivingly connected with said motor and supporting said member, clutch means switch' and its associated control member adjustably for angular movement about an axis of rotation in said frame whereby said control members may be adjustably spaced apart along the arc of a circle centred at said axis, said control members being operable the one to cause closure of the normally open switch and the other to cause opening of the normally closed switch, actuating means supported in said frame including a switch actuating member movable in a circular path about said rotary axis and operable at substantially constant speed to actuate the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after actuating the control member of the normally open switch, said switch actuating member being normally stationary under stand-by conditions, a motor operable at a controlled speed, and means operable to drivingly connect said actuating member with said motor to start the timing device in operation comprising a shaft drivingly connected with said motor and supporting said member, clutch means operable to drivingly connect the shaft with said member, and means to shift the shaft axially in one direction to operate the clutch means, said clutch means comprising a gear member and a co-operating tooth member connected one on the shaft and the other to the switch actuating member.
17. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch on said frame, a control member for each switch means to support said normally open switch and its associated control member in fixed position in said frame, means to support the normally closed switch and its associated control member adjustably for angular movement about an axis of rotation in said frame whereby said control members may be adjustably spaced apart along the arc of a circle centred at said axis, said control members being operable the one to cause closure of the normally open switch and the other to cause opening of the normally closed switch, actuating means supported in said frame including a switch actuating member movable in a circular path about said rotary axis and operable at substantially constant speed to actuate the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after actuating the control member of the normally open switch, said switch actuating member being normally stationary under stand-by conditions, a motor operable at a controlled speed, and means operable to drivingly connect said actuating member with said motor to start the timing device in operation and to disconnect the member from the motor at the conclusion of the operatinig cycle of the device, comprising a shaft drivingly connected with said motor and supporting said member, clutch means operable to drivingly connect the shaft with said member, means to shift the shaft axially in one direction to operate the clutch means, and yielding means normally urging the shaft axially in the opposite direction toward stand-by position.
18. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch on said sociated control member in fixed position in said frame, means to support the normally closed switch audits associated control member adjustably for angular movement about an axis of rotation in said frame whereby said control members may be adjustably spaced apart along the arc of a circle centred at said axis, said control members being operable the one to cause closure of the normally open switch and the other to cause opening of the normally closed switch, actuating means supported in said frame including a switch actuating member movable in a circular path about,said rotary axis and operable at substantially constant speed to actuate the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after actuating the control member of the normally open switch, said switch actuating member being normally stationary under stand-by conditions, a motor operable at a controlled speed, and means operable to drivingly connect said actuating member with said motor to start the timing device in operation and to disconnect the member from the motor at the conclusion of the operating cycle of the device, comprising a shaft drivingly connected with said motor and supporting said member, clutch means operable to drivingly connect the shaft with said member, means to shift the shaft axially in one direction to operate the clutch means, and yielding means normally urging the shaft axially in the opposite direction toward stand-by position, said switch actuating member being shiftable axially with said shaft from stand-by position offset with respect to said switch control members to operative position in alignment therewith.

A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch on said frame, a control member for each switch, means to support said normally open switch and it associated control member in fixed position in said frame, means to support the normally closed switch and its associated control member adjustably for angular movement about an axis of rotation in said frame whereby said control members may be adjustably spaced apart along the arc of a circle centred at said axis, said control members being operable the one to cause closure of the normally open switch and the other to cause opening of the normally closed switch, actuating means supported in said frame including a switch actuating member movable in a circular path about said rotary axis and operable at substantially constant speed to actuate the control member of the normally closed switch at a predetermined instant after actuating the control member of the normally open switch, said switch actuating member being normally stationary under stand-by conditions, a motor operable at a controlled speed, and means operable to drivingly connect said actuating member with said motor to start the timing device in operation and to disconnect the member from the motor at the conclusion of the operating cycle of the device, comprising a shaft drivingly connected with said motor and supporting said member, clutch means operable to drivingly connect the shaft with said member, means to shift the shaft axially in one direction to operate the clutch means, and yielding means normally urging the shaft axially in the opposite direction toward stand-by position, said switches each having resetting means extending adjacent said shaft and said shaft having means thereon to engage and actuate said resetting means when moved to stand-by position. A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch adapted for connection in series to control a circuit, means to mount said switches in spaced relationship in said frame, actuating means operable on said frame to close the normally open switch and then open the normally closed switch after a predetermined interval following closure of the normally open switch, said switches each comprising a support base carrying a fixed contact element, a movable switch member shiftable on said base and carrying a movable contact member in position to engage and release said fixed contact element whereby the switch may selectively assume switch open and switch closed position, a latch comprising a tiltable detent keeper on said base and a detent on said movable member adapted to latch with said keeper to hold said movable member normally in one of said switch positions, and yielding means biasing said movable switch member toward and operable to throw the movable switch member to the other switchposition upon release of said keeper from the detent by operation of said actuating means.

A timing device comprising a frame, a normally open and a normally closed switch adapted for connection in series to control a circuit, means to mount said switches in spaced relationship in said frame, actuating means operable on said frame to close the normally open switch and then open the normally closed switch after a predetermined interval following closure of the normally,
open switch, said switches each comprising a support base carrying a fixed contact element, a movable switch member shiftable on said base and carrying a movable contact member in position to engage and release said fixed contact element whereby the switch may selectively assume switch open and switch closed position, a latch comprising a tiltable detent keeper on said base and a detent on said movable member adapted to latch w th said keeper tohold said movable member normally in one of said switch positions, and yielding means biasing said movable switch member toward and operable to throw the movable switch member to the other switch position upon release of said-keeper from the detent by operation of said actuating means, said movable switch member having a resetting member operable to shift the movable switch member against the influence of said yielding means to latch the detent with the keeper.
