Description
y 1943- e. w. EMMERT v 2,324,498
' noun Filed June 18, 1942 Patented July 20, 1943 UNITEDYSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
HONE. George W. Emmert,.Chicago, Ill. V Application'June 1s, 1942, Serial N 447,487 I 12 Claims.
This invention relates to a hone and has for an object the provision of an improved hone which is particularly suitable for simultaneously sharpening both edges ofa double-edged safety razor blade. c
'In accordance with one embodiment of this invention, the hone comprises a flat sheet having an embossment therein extending out of the plane of the sheet and a facir'ig'of abrasive material integrated with the inside surfaces of the.
embossmentto provide a suitable honing surface.
The flat sheet is preferably prepared from heavy flat sheet to provide an enclosure when the flap.
is folded over the flatsheetL. The enclosure so formed is adapted to .serveas a receptacle for oneor more safety razor blades when thehone is not in use.
The embossing inthe fiat sheet preferably has gradually sloping. sidewalls which meet in a central portion of the. embossment so that a razor blademay be positioned thereon and gentlyv rotated with the exertion of slight; pressure whereby a desired sharpening or honing is effect-l ed as will hereinafteribemore fully described. The home of thisinventionis readily prepared, is light inrweight, and occupies a minimum of space when not in use,
For a more complete understanding of invention reference will now be had to the drawing,.in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hone constructed in accordance with one embodiment of a this invention showing a razor blade in dotted lines positioned on the honing surface thereof;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the hone shown in Fig. 1 showing the flap positioned over the honing surface; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing, the hone there shown comprises a'fiat sheet of heavy paper or paper-like material having a centrally positioned embossment 12 extending out of the plane thereof. The embossment is provided with end walls I4 and rectangularly-shaped side walls l6, which latter present substantially flat surfaces in the central portions thereof and slope walls of the embossment l2.
gradually to meet in a central portion of the embossment. A sheet of abrasive materiallB is adhesively. secured to the inside walls l6. of the embossment as shown in the drawing. This sheet of abrasive material may comprise waterproof paper with which has beenIassociated finely divided particles of a suitable abrasive, such as carborundum or the like. However, it will be clear thatthe abrasive particles may be directly integrated with the side walls of the embossment if desired. c p
The sheet I!) is. provided with an integral flap 20 which is adapted to be folded over the sheet:
Hi to provide a protective covering for the honing surface on the side walls of the embossment ment 22 having end walls 24 andside walls Zl-i,I
which embossment is similar to the embossment, l2 positioned in the sheet It. When the flap 20 is folded over the sheet Ill, the embossments 22 and I2 are in registering relationship and provide an enclosure or receptacle in which safety. razor blades may be carriedwhen the hone is notv in use. As shown in the drawing, the sheet 10 and the flap 20 may be prepared from a single sheet of paper-like material which is divided into. two sections and is capable of being folded over on itself along the scored line 28. If desired the inside side walls 26 of the embossment 22 may be provided with an abrasive or honing surface (not shown) which is also adaptable simultane ously to sharpenboth edges of a double-edged safety razor blade in the same manner as the abrasive surface associated with the inside side In such a case it may be desirable that the abrasive material secured to the embossment 22 be somewhat finer grained than that secured to the embossment l 2 so that a suitable'finish may be provided on the sharpened edges of the blade.
In order to sharpen a safety razor bl-ade on the hone of this invention, a blade 30 may be positinned on the honing surface N3 of the hone. .so that the side edges of the blade contact the abrasive as shown in the dotted lines of the drawing. A circular motion isthen imparted to the blade by the fingers with the simultaneous application of slight pressure until the desired sharpening has been effected. The hone may be used dry, or if desired a small amount of water may be applied tothe honing surface in order to assist in the sharpening. If water is used, the support for the abrasive particles should be prepared from a waterproof material.
It will, of course, be clear that many modifications may be made in the structure described in detail in the foregoing without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention. For example, the embossment 22 may be dispensed with in the flap 20. Also, the embossment l2 may be provided with gradually sloping side walls I6 as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, or the cross-sectional configuration of the embossment may be substantially concave if desired. I have discovered, however, that somewhat more effective. sharpening of the blade is obtainable if each of the side walls 16 of the embossment presents a substantially flat surface in the central portion' thereof as illustrated in Fig. 2.
It will be clear from the foregoing that I have provided a new and improved hone which may be cheaply and readily prepared from sheet material which is capable of being embossed. Em-
bossing paper capable of receiving the embossment contemplated in the hone of this present invention is well known and is readily available onthe market. Such paper is relatively heavy and is suiiiciently stiff so that the embossment will retain its shape even though the hone may be subjected to a reasonable amount of abuse.
While one particular embodiment of this invention is shown above, it will be understood, of course, that the invention is not to be limited thereto, since many modifications may be made and it is contemplated, therefore, by the appended claims, to cover any such modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of this invention.
