Description

E. A. J. MANNEOK. Device for Fastening Tapes to Boxes.
Patented Sept. 14,1880.

-PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTO UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL A. J. MANNEOK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DEVICE FOR FASTENING TAPES TO BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of' Letters Patent No. 232,285, dated September 14:, 1880.
Application filed February 27. 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL A. J. MANNECK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Fastening Tapes to Boxes and other Articles and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in devices for fastening tapes to boxes, and other articles; and the invention consists in a device for securing tapes to boxes, constructed ofa disk or other form of metal, with a tongue formed therein, between which and the disk the end of the tape is firmly and permanently clamped, as is more particularly hereinafter described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box with tapes secured to it according to my invention; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of blank for fastening-disk; Fig. 3, plan or top viewv and section of disk with tongue cutinit; Fig. 4, plan or top view of same with tape fastened to it, and Fig. 5 section of my fastening device applied to box.
Similarletters ofrei'erenceindicate like parts in the several figures.
Ain the drawings represents a disk or other form, stamped or cut from sheet metal of any desirable kind, thickness, and size. Into the disk A is formed by stamping, or in anyother desirable manner, a tongue, B, united at one end, as at a, to the disk. Both the disk and ton guearc preferabl y slightly convex in shape.
Now, my device in this way constructed is utilized by raising the tongue from the surface of the disk, and by placing beneath the tongue so raised a tape or cord, 1), at its end, as in Fig. 4, or otherwise, and the tongue then being pressed down snugly against thetape, it will confine the tape tightly between the edges of the tongue and the edges of the disk, from which it has been raised. In this position the tape is held so tightly that it cannot be withdrawn. IVhen the end of the tape is in this way confined to the disk its free endis passed through a hole in the sidesof abox, E, to which it is to be applied, (the disk being in the inside,) when the tape is then prevented from being withdrawn from the hole in the box, through which it has been passed. The disk lying flat against the inner surface of the box, it otters no obstruction to the placing in and removing articles from the box.
In. the foregoing manner tapes and cords may be attached to boxes with great rapidity and security.
It is obvious that instead of a disk form the device may be of any convenientform, and in stead of being slightly convex, may be perfectly flat but the convex form of both tongue and disk is the most preferable, since it provides somewhat sharper edges to bite and hold the tape. If desired, instead of a tongue, two slits may be cut in the disk, forming a narrow strip of metal, which may then be raised, the tape placed beneath it, and the disk pressed down, as before described; or two cross-slits may be cut, forming four tongues; or a perforation may be made having a burr on one side, any one of which may be recognized as modifications of my invention.
It is obvious that my invention is also applicable to fastening handles or cords to satchels, pocket-books, and similar articles.
Having now described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved fastening device, consisting of a metal disk, A, having a tongue formed therein, as shown, and provided with a cord or tape held in place by such tongue, all adapted and arranged to apply to a box or other analogous article, as set forth.
.2. In a device for attaching tapes to boxes, the combination of a convex disk, A, convex tongue B, and tape D, all adapted to be applied to the box IE, substantially as and for the purpose described.
