Application Mai-c1131, 1943, Serial No. 481,340 16 claims. (orto-"62).
.This invention` relates `to' safety razors, oneof "the'objec'ts lbeing to fprovide asiinplef and inexpensive structure which i can bev readily Yformed 'ofsheet metal and, when properly 'shapedand assembled, will 'constitute an-eflicient holder for a' double-edged blade.
lAlfurther object is -to provide -a safety razor whioh can be manipula-ted readily and willnot easily get out' of order.
lt-'isalso an object to provide-a safety razor "which can-be readily cleaned andwhichf'acts'to /construction andY combinations ofpa'rts-hereinalter more'fully ldescribed and pointed out in the 1 claims, it being understood that changes maybe made in the construction andarranfgement lof parts without departing-from the-'spirit of the invention as' claimed.
In the accompanying-drawing the/preferred for-rn of the invention has been shown.
'In said "drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of Vthe 'Y safety razor, a blade being shown positioned therein.
l Figure 2 is a side-elevation.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section on line 3 3, Fig. l.
Figure 4 is a top plan view.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the head of the safety razor is formed.
Figure 6- is a plan view of the blank from which the handle is formed.
Figure 7 is a plan view of the razor blade.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, I designates a at plate constituting the base of the head of the razor, this head being provided with an elongated transverse slot 2 adjacent to one edge and this slotted portion is gently curved, as indicated particularly in Fig. 3 and merges into a rolled or folded edge 3 constituting a combined guide and guard.
Those corners of the base remote from the slot 2 are formed with small ears 4 preferably perpendicular to the plate or base I but slightly converging away from the slotted portion.
Plate I is provided with substantially U-shaped lia-t springs 5 integral therewith and extending from the back or top edge of the base, this being the edge which extends from one ear 4 to the other. These springs are spaced from the ears 4 and are also spaced from each other and serve I4 -to wedge between the ears 4.
lto -connect the -top edge of 'the base t'o aiclamp- `ing plate IB `which iis integral therewith a'n'd -a'dapted normally to bear against an'd -to cover most Yof the -adj acent surface of 'the base.
The handle comprises astrip `of sheet ymetal indicatedlat 1 which can '-'be of any desired con- `figurationand is 4provided'at one en'd withfside wings-'33 Vand-an Vend wing t'9. 'These Y'wings `are adapted to be bent 4into positions at right angles to the adjacent portion of the handle Iffand along the-lines indicated by brokenlines-inFig. 6 so vas thus tofor-malbex'like Istructure indicated generallyat i9, `This is adapted to lb'e joinedto the center ofthe -back of plate `I'by brazi'ngfor otherwise joining the -wingf'l thereto. Thus a verysuhstantiallrazor formed only ofY two `pieces `of material-is provided.
'I'Ihe razor bladefhas been indicated at I I `and has'two'c'tting edges- I2. Wings orl'lnger'pieces 20.
ideare extended from the ends ofthe Ablade'and f 're' located Ain `the lsame 'plane therewith' and the cornersoflthe blade are beveled as at I4, these Ibeveled corners yextending fromV the wings to the edge `thereof is inserted Yupwardly vbetween f the Acl'ar'nping-plate vl and the base'l, it canlbe forced back soyas to -causethe 'advancing beveled corners 'l his wedging action supplemented by'the clamping action of the plate 6 will result in securely holding the blade in position. The wings or finger pieces I3 are extended beyond the sides of the razor and are held between a nger and the thumb of one hand while the blade is being inserted into the razor held in the other hand. When the blade is in proper position one of its cutting edges will be located adjacent to but spaced from the walls of the slot 2 while the other edge will be straddled by the springs 5. However the ears 4 and the wings or linger pieces I3 will prevent this latter edge from pressing back against the springs. Springs and top lugs serve as guards for the edge not being used.
When it is desired to remove the blade it is merely necessary to grasp the finger pieces I3 between the finger and thumb of a hand and then pull downwardly or forwardly so as to forcibly withdraw the blade from frictional contact with the ears 4 and with the clamping spring 6.
The stop ears 4 not only constitute means for permitting the blade to wedge therebetween but they also act to center the blade properly in the head so that there will be no danger of a protruding corner at the active edge which might cut the user.
Importance is attached to the fact that the entire structure can be formed readily of sheet metal, can be easily assembled, and, consequently, can be made at low cost. It is also possible to make the razor of sheet plastic material so that only the blade need be made of metal.
What is claimed is:

A razor blade including a base having a transverse slot adjacent to one edge thereof, said edge constituting a guard, a clamping plate, springs integral with and connecting said plate and base at one edge for urging the plate normally against the base, centering elements extending from those corners of the base remote from the slot, and a handle extending from the base.
2. A safety razor formed of sheet material and including in a single blank a base having a transverse slot adjacent to one edge, a clamping plate, springs integral with and connecting the base and plate at those edges thereof remote from the slot, said springs constituting means for urging the plate normally against the base, centering ears on the base at those corners thereof remote from the slot and beyond the clamping plate, and a handle formed in a single piece of sheet material joined to and extending from the base. v
3. A safety razor formed of sheet material and including in a single blank a base having a transverse slot adjacent to one edge, a clamping plate,
`springs integral with and connecting the base :and plate at those edges thereof remote from the slot, said springs constituting means for urging the plate normally against the base, center- -ing ears on the base at those corners thereof remote from the slot and beyond the clamping plate, and a handle formed in a single piece of .sheet material joined to and extending from the base, said plate and ears constituting means for frictionally engaging and holding a razor blade insertible between the base and plate and against the ears.
4. A safety razor formed of sheet material and vincluding in a single blank a base having a transverse slot adjacent to one edge, a clamping plate,
springs integral with and connecting the base Cil and plate at those edges thereof remote from the slot, said springs constituting means for urging the plate normally against the base, centering ears on the base at those corners thereof remote from the slot and beyond the clamping plate, and a handle formed in a single piece of sheet material joined to and extending from the base, said plate and ears constituting means for frictionally engaging and holding a razor blade lnsertible between the base and plateand against the ears, the said springs being positioned for cooperation with the ears to constitute guards for that edge of the inserted plate remote from the slot.
5. In a safety razor the combination with a two-edged blade having beveled corners and finger pieces extending from the ends of the blade and in the same plane therewith, and a razor head including a base of sheet material, stop ears extending from one surface of said base along converging lines, a clamping plate, and springs integral with the base and clamping plate for holding said clamping plate normally, pressed toward the base, said base and plate cooperating to grip the inserted blade and said ears constituting stops between which the beveled corners adjacent to one edge of the blade can be wedged,v
the springs and ears providing a guard for said head, and a handle extending from the base.
6. In a safety razor the combination with a two-edged blade having beveled corners and finger pieces extending from the ends of the blade and in the same plane therewith, and a razor head including a base of sheet material, stop ears extending from one surface of said base along converging lines, a clamping plate,l and springs integral with the base and clamping plate for holding said clamping plate normally pressed toward the base, said base and plate cooperating to grip the inserted blade and said ears constituting stops between which the beveled corners adjacent to one edge of the blade can be wedged, the springs and ears providing a guard for'said head, and a handle extending from the base,
