Patented May 25, 1943 ERASER GUARD V Charles J. Leonard, Chicago, lll., assignor to The M. B. Cook Company, Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Illinois Application November 14, 1941, Serial No. 419,117
(Cl. 12o- 41) li Claims.
My invention relates to a device adapted to be used by typists or others and is in the natureof a sheet protector adapted to be employed in superimposed relation to a carbon copy sheet when it is desired to erase material on the original sheet and prevent the smudging or smearing ofthe carbon copy sheet when the erasure is made on the original sheet. In practice erasures are made by the typist -without removing the original sheet, the carbon transfer sheet and the carbon copy sheetl from the typewriting machine or the like. My protector is a convenient device which may be inserted preferably between the carbon face of the carbon sheet and the face of the carbon copy sheet so that the carbon copy sheet is protected during any erasures on the top sheet and the pressure during erasing does not mark the carbon copy.
The invention has among its objects the production of a sheet protector device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, eflicient, attractive and inexpensive, and which may likewise provide an inexpensive advertising medium.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shownand described will beV obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of my improved device partially concealed by the turned back associated original and carbon sheets with which it is adapted for use;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the device; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation.
Referring to the drawing, I represents a body part of suitable material, preferably of tough, light weight and flexible material and of the desired size. It is also a type of material which will not readily absorb or pick up the carbon which has been deposited on the carbon copy sheet. It may be of a material that is transparent, translucent, or opaque, the transparent body having certain advantages which will be hereinafter referred'to. This body l is provided with a handle 2 which may be integral with the body part or a separate piece secured thereto by rivets 3, or cement or in any other satisfactory manner. As will be seen from Fig. 3 the body part is preferably rounded on a portion of the corners as indicated at 4 so as to be less likely to snag on the sheets. The handle 2 when made separable as shown is preferably of somewhat thicker material and relatively stiffer than the body I, rendering the device more convenient to handle and also avoiding a floppy or overly iiexible device. Of course where the body'and handle areintegral, the handle may be stiffened by reenforcing or ribbing in any of the common and well known manners. The handle may, if desired, be provided with a scale or ruler as indicated at 5 for convenience of the typist, divisions being in inches or such other spaces as may be preferred.
As shown in Fig. 1, I0 represents what may be termed an original sheet upon which the writing is produced by the type in the usual manner and I2 represents the ordinary sheet of carbon paper which is arranged with the carbon face or side in contact with the sheet I3 which may be designated as the carbon copy sheet. I have also indicated writing or characters I4 which have been placed on the original sheet in due course of business or operations. Assuming that it is desired to erase something onA the face of the original sheet, the original sheet and carbon sheet I2 may be turned back and the protector inserted at the desired point to-wit, under the material to be erased on the original sheet I0. The body part 4 is of a size to cover a reasonably substantial portion of the carbon imprint. If the body I is made of a transparent or semitransparent material it may be readily located over the proper place on the carbon copy sheet, but generally this location may be readily found from practice. After the device has been inserted between the sheet I3 and the carbon sheet I2, the erasure may be made on the original sheet I0 but the pressure or rubbing on the original sheet will not cause a smearing on the carbon copy sheet as would be the case if the erasure was made without inserting a protector or without removing the papers from the machine. The material of the body part is preferably such that it will not absorb or pick up carbon on the bod7 sheet. It is, of course, understood that after the erasure has been made on the original sheet, a similar erasure may be made on the carbon copy sheet after which the sheets are turned back and correction is made on the original, which will, of course, be duplicated on the carbon copy sheet I3.
It is obvious that the handle portion 2 need not be made of the same material as the body part, although I generally prefer to make it of What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: f
1. A sheet protector of the kind described consisting of a body part of suitable thin flexible material of a length and widthto overlie a reasonably substantial portion of an imprint on a second or carbon copy sheet and underlie a like portion of the print on an original sheet superimposed over the carbon copy sheet and interposed sheet of carbon paper, said body part provided With a handle portion disposed substantially in the same plane and projecting from one end and oiset with respect to said body part, said handle portion of less Width thanv the body of the sheet and relatively stiffer.
2. A sheet protector of the kinddescribed consisting of a body part of suitable-thin flexible material of a length and Width` to overlie a reasonably substantial portion of an imprint on a second or carbon copy sheet and underlie a like portion of the print on an original sheet superimposed over the carbon copy sheet and interposed sheet of carbon paper, said body part constructed of a material that will not absorb or pick up a carbon impression on the carbon copy sheet, said body part being provided with a handle portion disposed in the plane of said body part and projecting from one end thereof and in offcenter relation to said body part, said handle being relatively-stiier than the body portion.
. 3. A sheet protector of the kind described consisting of a body part of suitable material of a length and width to overlie a reasonably substantial portion of an imprint on a carbon copy sheet and underlie a like portion of the writing on an original superimposed sheet and a sheet of carbon paper overlying the copy sheet, said body part constructed of a transparent material to aid in locating the same upon said carbon copy sheet, said material being of a kind that will not absorb or pick up a Vcarbon impression on the carbon copy sheet, said body provided with a portion constituting a handle projecting from one lateral edge thereof and parallel with respect thereto, said handle relatively stiffer than the body portion.
4. A Vsheet protector of the kind described consisting of a body part of suitable material of a length and width to overlie a portion of an imprint on a carbon copy sheet and underlie a portion of the print on a sheet superimposed over the copy sheet and a sheet of carbon paper, said body part provided with a portion constituting a handle projecting from one lateral edge thereof, said body part and said handle being substantially co-extensive in the same plane.
5. An eraser guard for multiple typewritten copy sheets comprising a relatively thin flexible shield, and a handle for inserting said shield to any point between said sheets, said handle being of relatively stiff material and connected With said shield parallel to one edge thereof and extending only along a portion of said shield, whereby the remaining portion of said shield may freely flex with respect to said handle.
6. An eraser guard for multiple typewritten copy sheets comprising a flexible shield of normally flat material, and a handle of substantially stiff material for inserting said shield to any point between said sheets, said handle being connected in lateral oiset relation to said shield in one direction thereof and terminating intermediate the length thereof in the other direction whereby free flexing of said shield is attained laterally of and beyond the end of said substantially stiff handle.
