' The present invention relates to a certain new and useful merchandising package for counter display and use and more particularly to a novel means for displaying and selling hair nets and the like.

The selling of hair nets and other articles which occupy a comparatively small space when not in use as compared to their appearance when in use has long presented certain problems. If such hair nets are displayed as a collection of crumpled and formless bits of netting, they make a very unattractive display with little or no customer appeal. In addition, when displayed in this fashion, they are continually handled by customers resulting in their being soiled and stretched and, not infrequently, torn and rendered unsalable. Furthermore, when displayed in this fashion, they can be readily pilfered.

-'One object of the present invention is to providea merchandising package for counter display and use of such hair nets whereby a hair net can be displayed as it appears in actual use. Another object of the present invention is to provide a counter display package in which a comparatively vlarge number of such hair nets can be displayed in an attractive and eiective manner to customers. Still another object of the present invention is to provide a merchandising package which will minimize handling by the customer and which will be more or less pilier-resistant. For the purpose of illustrating the invention, there is shown in the accompanying drawing a formthereof which is at present preferred, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Inone embodiment of the present invention I provide a displayhead which is cut out to show, in profile, a womans head and neck and a portion of a shoulder. Said head I0 may be formed of cardboard or other relatively inexpensive material which has suicient body and strength so that it will not bend or fold readily,

I prefer to have said head I0 colored, in natural colors, so that it will be more attractive and appealing. This can be done by lithographing or painting or printing or in any other appropriate manner. I may also provide a series of such heads in each of which the hair and complexion is colored to correspond to different types; as for example, blond, brunette and auburn. It is possible, however, to have such heads printed merely in black and white. While it is possible to print or color both sides of said head I0, I prefer to color only one side which I may designate as the front II thereof, while leaving the rback I2 thereof uncolored inasmuch as said back I2, as will be hereinafter described, Will not be displayed to customers.

Said head I0 may be made natural size or slightly greater than natural size and is provided with a plurality of openings I3 distributed about that portion of the head on which is shown thel hair, as indicated particularly in Figure' 3.

In arranging said display package for use, I take a plurality of hair nets I4, corresponding to the number of openings I3 in the head I0 and place them in their crumpled positions against the back I2 of the head IIJ. I then rpush and pull through each of the openings I3, which may be more or less approximately 1A in diameter, a portion of one of the hair nets I4. Enough of the hair net is pulled through the opening to make a tuft I5 of approximately one to two inches in diameter on the front side II of the head IU. I prefer to employ a plurality of hair nets III which are of diiferent shades, as for example black, light brown, dark brown, light blue, gold, green, pink and so on, so that when said hair nets I4 are pulled through the openings I3, a person viewing the head I0 from the front side I I thereof will see a plurality of different colored tufts I5 arranged over the hair of the head I0. These tufts I5 are so arranged that they will not entirely cover the picturization of the hair I6 itself, so that the appearance of the net relative to the color of hair shown can be noted by the customer.

A single hair net I1 is then stretched over the head I0 as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and tied with the bow I8 about the neck I9 of said head I0. The net II will cover the hair portion I6 of the head I0 and also the wads I5 on the front side II of the head I0 and will enclose the remainder of the nets I 4 on the back side I2 of the head IIJ.

As shown in Figure 1, this arrangement `will permit the customer to see what the hair net looks like as worn, and, at the same time, to note and compare the different shades and colors in which the hair net is available by observing the diierent colored wads I5 as they appear against the hair portion I6 through the hair net I1. The outer net II may be of a color most suitable t0 the particular coloringA (blond, brunette or auburn used on the front portion II.

It can be readily seen, therefore, that the present invention provides a very neat and attractive; A

and appealing display unit whereby the customer can observe not only the appearanceof the net in actual use, but also the diierentshades in which the net is available. At the same time,

the present invention tends to discouragethe' handling of the nets I4 by the customersince;

they are more or less enclosed and isolated by the outer hair net II'I. In this way the netsA I4 arekept neat and fresh as well as unsoiled and undamaged. Furthermore; since it involves a certain amount of manipulation to remove one of the nets I4, any pilfering by customers is discouraged.

When any particular hair net I4v has been selected by a customer, said' hair net can be removed readily by the sales person as is shown in; Figure 4. That is, the salesperson raises theA more or less elastic edge 20 of the outer net, Il away from the back I2 of the head I0 and reachesin to grasp the portionZI of the desired net I4 which is behind the back I2; The desirednet I4. can then readily be drawn out from under the outer net I I as shown in Figure 4, without disturbing or disarranging the remaining hair nets I4. The edge 20iof the outer net I'I is then released and snaps back into place to enclose the remaining nets. I4.

In this manner, the several individual nets I4 can be removed as desired whenV sold1 or when offered for closer inspection. As the several hair nets I4 are removed,- the corresponding openings I3 become apparent through the outer net I1; this, however, does not detract in any way from the apperance of the-display so that the display may be used unimpaired until the entire stock of` nets is exhausted.

As mentioned previously, it is. possible to have two or three heads with differentV coloring, better to set oif the appearance of the different: shade nets so that the customer can see which particula-r shade will best suit her coloring. It has been found, however, that even a single display head has a high degree of sales efficiency.

' The head I0 can be held erect by merely propping it against a suitable back surface or preferably, it can be provided with a hinged leg 22- attached to the back I2 thereof so that it can stand erect by itself. The leg 22 can be made more or less triangular in shape being attached to the back I2 along one side 23 of said legY 22 so that the leg 2I lies nat against I2 whenL the display is not used but can` be swung outwardly to provide a support as shown in Figurev 2.

The present invention may be embodiedY in other specic forms Without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive,` reference being had tothe appended claims rather than to the foregoingV description to indicate the scope of the invention.

The present invention is particularly effective as a means for displaying the different colors or shades in which the hair-nets are available, since a dozen or more nets can be displayed on a single head to demonstrate the available colors. Formerly it would have been necessary to employ a dozen or moreheads tosetithe different colors effectively and clearly; Sincethislarge' number of heads was impractical, the customer formerly never was able to observe and compare the different colors to good advantage, so that, not infrequently, either the sale was lost or the customer. didnot, purchase the most effective color for her complexion and hair.

Having thus described the invention, what is hereby claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:

A merchandising unit for displaying, and vending womens hair-nets comprising a relatively-flat womans silhouette formed of' cardboard or the lilre, said silhouette having one, or more openings therethrough at the head portion thereof, one or more hair-nets disposed in part in back of said, silhouette and having a portion thereof passing through oneY ofl said openings and forming a tuft` protruding, in front, of said head portion, and an outerhair-net. enclosing said one or more hair-netsA and, said head portion, said outer hair-net forming a more or less closed and tamper-resisting container for dis,. playing said one or more hair-nets.
